Saint Daniel, the first Prince of Moscow, was the youngest son of Prince Alexander Nevsky. In 1272 he inherited the Moscow principality, which was rather poor in comparison with other ones, where his elder brothers ruled. During the tatar-mongol yoke and internecine wars piteous and kind-hearted Daniel created peace without bloodshed. Because of his remarkable humbleness and peacefulness Daniel was very popular among the Russian people. Daniel ruled 30 years, during those the Moscow principality became one of the important and powerful ones in Russia. He marked the beginning of the unity of the Russian lands around the future capital.

Long ago, Sokolniki, which is now a huge park in the northeast of Moscow, were dense woods in the Moscow suburbs. In the 15th century, this forest land became the venue for grand-ducal falconry, which was especially popular among Russian nobles during the rule of Aleksey Mikhailovich. As legend has it, the Tsar had a falcon (Russian: "sokol") named Shiryay, which fell to its death during a hunt. Consequently, the Shiryaevo Field, Shiryaevskaya streets and Shiryaevsky passages were named after that very bird. This hunting place has been referred to as Sokolniki ever since.

🛥️River cruises in Moscow 🛥️

We promised to give you some information about river cruises in Moscow - so here it is!

River cruise is a great way to explore the city from a different angle and also have some rest after a tiring walking tour.

Main Moscow river in Moskva and most of the cruises embark from the main piers: Moscow city, Fili, Gorky park, Bolshoi Kamenny most (Large Stone Bridge) and others.

Duration of the river cruises vary from 1 hour to 2,5 hours. Longest ones offer dinner or disco onboard.

Season of river navigation is approximately from April to November, when there is no ice.

Usually there is a live Russian speaking guide during the cruise so make sure to get an audioguide in English or arrange your tour guide to translate the excursion for you.

Don't forget to get sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen as sun on the water may be cruel to your skin!

The revenue house at Ilyinka Street, 12, is one of the most unusual and beautiful buildings in Moscow. Until 2017 it was occupied by the former archive of the Soviet Communist Party, and any access there was limited. Now the building houses the VIP office of Sberbank. However, this gorgeous operational room could be in a true palace instead of a bank. And the house situated so close to the Kremlin, surely has a long and rich history.
