Today’s sunrise hike up Pincushion Peak. Timed it perfectly for what is called a Brocken Spectre inside Glory Rings. This from Wikipedia “The phenomenon can appear on any misty mountainside, cloud bank, or be seen from an aircraft, but the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, have created a local legend from which the phenomenon draws its name. The Brocken spectre was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780, and has often been recorded in literature about the region.”

The Dolomites Trek; first hut to hut of the summer. The Dolomites Trek begins at the trailhead just above Lago di Braies in the Puster Valley in the Northern Dolomites, the starting point of the famed 86-mile Alta Via 1. The trek continues through the Belluneser Dolomites into the Ampezzaner Dolomites to our last hike to the iconic Tre Cime / Drei Zinnen. The Tre Cime area was a location of fierce fighting during WWI and there are still many artifacts scattered about. These pics are from the first day’s hike. It’s an amazing trek.

The Dolomites are about 250 millions years old and are composed mainly of sedimentary rocks and limestone. Try to imagine that once the mighty mountains were an enormous coral reef, formed in the primordial ocean called Tethys.
A typical characteristic of the Dolomites is the abrupt change between rugged rocks and hilly, green mountain pastures. Reasons for this are the rock formations, which are made up of different compositions, different gradations of hardness of the rocks, and the impact of natural forces that include the alternate elevation or sinking due to earthquakes, volcanic explosions or flooding. The hike to Dreischuster Hutte from San Candido/Innichen offers many views of green pastures, wildflowers, and evergreens juxtaposed against rugged rocks.
It’s still easy to find fossil rocks in the Dolomites. If you cannot wander the stunning trails, particularly beautiful and impressive fossils of the Dolomites can be seen in different South Tyrolean museums, such as in the Museum DoloMythos in Innichen, at GEOPARC Bletterbach or in the Museum of Nature in Bozen.

Pics from the hike to Tre Cime, which is the last day of the Dolomites hike before ending the trek in Cortina, the site of the Winter Olympics in 2026. Still lots of WWI trenches and bunkers, and artifacts. If you know what you are looking for there is still shrapnel lying all over the place. It was an area of heavy fighting under brutal conditions. It’s hallowed ground for more than just it’s intense beauty.

On day 3 of the TerraTreks 2019 Dolomites hike we started with a walk along the lake before the ascent to the Sennes Plateau. We stopped along the way for lunch at the Sennes Hut. Today was a day of varied terrain. We walked along a lake, climbed rocks, walked through a forest of evergreens, hiked over snow patches and finally came to our stop for the next two nights—the awesome Fanes Hutte; our private rooms opened to verandas with comfy chairs where we could sit, sip, and look out in the direction of tomorrow’s hike. I didn’t think it could get much better, but it did.

We’re back….after postponing the Dolomites hike in 2020 and 2021, it’s back! This year’s hike is full but we’ll be doing it again next year and it’s not too early to make plans. If you just can’t wait, visit the link in our profile and take a look at the Rosengarten hike, which still has a few spots left. Three years ago this was our first full day of hiking. After an early morning stretch with our yoga instructor/hiker Jeanette, we snuck into the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee while we waited for breakfast to begin then it was daypacks on and out the door. We started off toward Lago di Braies and kept climbing until we reached the summit of Kuhwiesengipfel at 2140m where we signed the book, took some great pictures of wildflowers with the Dolomites all around, relaxed for a bit and ate lunch. We continued on to Pragser Kaser and around the Schwarzberg down to Grunwaldalm, and then back to our lodge. It was the easiest day we did with an elevation gain of about 2650 over 6.2 miles. After hitting the bar, showers, and dinner, it was time for bed. From our balconies we watched the moon reflecting off Lago di Braies and fell asleep to the gentle lapping of water against the lakeshore. A great first day!

The Rosengarten Legend 2/2 The Rest of the Story. After riding away with Similde….All the noblemen, who had hoped to win her hand, followed King Laurin, led by Dietrich from Bern and his armorer Hildebrand. Soon they arrived at the rose garden willing to fight for the beautiful Similde. But King Laurin also had a miracle belt which gave him the strength of twelve men, so he accepted the battle. He soon realized that despite his clever magic he could not defeat the noblemen, so he put on his invisibility coat and ran across his rose garden. Sadly, the Knights
were able to follow him because, despite King Lauren’s invisibility, the lovely roses swayed with every movement of the king thus betraying his location. The noblemen grabbed the dwarf king, destroyed the magic belt and coat, and took him into captivity. As he was being led away King Laurin turned back on his beautiful garden and roses, which had betrayed him, and conjured a
spell that neither by day nor by night a human eye should ever see their beauty again. But Laurin had forgotten the twilight, and so it is that people even today in mornings and evenings can see high in the walls of the Rosengarten massif the blossoming rose garden of King Laurin as the light illuminates the color of the roses forever locked in the massive stone walls.

One of the spectacular features of the Rosengarten is the constant change in color as the day unfolds, from pink to red and purple as the setting sun casts light on the rock walls rising above what was once a seabed. Because of its beauty, and what must have been the mystery of
the changing colors, the area is also steeped in folklore. According to legend, today the slopes of the high valley between the Rosengartenspitze, Laurinswand, and Vajolet towers are covered with talus, but there was once a wonderful rose garden of Laurin, the dwarf king. When
the king of Etsch country wanted to offer his beautiful daughter, Similde, in marriage he invited all noblemen around, except King Laurin. But way before Harry Potter discovered his invisibility cloak, King Laurin had a magic coat with a miraculous hood that enabled him to participate in
the festivities as an invisible guest. Upon seeing Similde he immediately fell in love with her, put her on his horse and rode away.
What happened next explains the colors of the Rosengarten and is the subject of tomorrow’s post.

When I travel I like to know a bit of the history, geography, and culture of a place before I arrive. I’ve been hiking and planning hikes for groups in the Dolomites for a few years. I’ve loved every hike I’ve ever been on and I’ve never seen a mountain I didn’t think was beautiful, but the Dolomites are unique to other places I’ve hiked in the world….and Yosemite is my home turf. I found this interesting piece of geological history in a UNESCO publication; the link is included. “The Dolomites have not always been mountains. In the Permian period the area was flat and furrowed by rivers, whereas in the Triassic it was a wide tropical sea, dotted with small atolls and the occasional volcano. Over time these islands increased in size, becoming similar to the current Caribbean islands. When the Atlantic Ocean was formed the whole area sank. Then Africa detached itself from the Pangaea, turning towards Europe and in this way forming the Alps. The Dolomites emerged from the sea, rising up thousands of meters.” The Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage, 2010. https://www.dolomitiunesco.it/en/ the-dolomites/ More interesting Dolomites info to follow.

Snow capped mountains, blue sky above, California Poppies in bloom, sunlight glistening on the river, wildflowers blowing in the breeze, and an American Bald Eagle in flight over it all. All that in 3.5 miles; quite a nice little hike today.
