Today’s sunrise hike up Pincushion Peak. Timed it perfectly for what is called a Brocken Spectre inside Glory Rings. This from Wikipedia “The phenomenon can appear on any misty mountainside, cloud bank, or be seen from an aircraft, but the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, have created a local legend from which the phenomenon draws its name. The Brocken spectre was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780, and has often been recorded in literature about the region.”

The Dolomites Trek; first hut to hut of the summer. The Dolomites Trek begins at the trailhead just above Lago di Braies in the Puster Valley in the Northern Dolomites, the starting point of the famed 86-mile Alta Via 1. The trek continues through the Belluneser Dolomites into the Ampezzaner Dolomites to our last hike to the iconic Tre Cime / Drei Zinnen. The Tre Cime area was a location of fierce fighting during WWI and there are still many artifacts scattered about. These pics are from the first day’s hike. It’s an amazing trek.

The Dolomites are about 250 millions years old and are composed mainly of sedimentary rocks and limestone. Try to imagine that once the mighty mountains were an enormous coral reef, formed in the primordial ocean called Tethys.
A typical characteristic of the Dolomites is the abrupt change between rugged rocks and hilly, green mountain pastures. Reasons for this are the rock formations, which are made up of different compositions, different gradations of hardness of the rocks, and the impact of natural forces that include the alternate elevation or sinking due to earthquakes, volcanic explosions or flooding. The hike to Dreischuster Hutte from San Candido/Innichen offers many views of green pastures, wildflowers, and evergreens juxtaposed against rugged rocks.
It’s still easy to find fossil rocks in the Dolomites. If you cannot wander the stunning trails, particularly beautiful and impressive fossils of the Dolomites can be seen in different South Tyrolean museums, such as in the Museum DoloMythos in Innichen, at GEOPARC Bletterbach or in the Museum of Nature in Bozen.

Pics from the hike to Tre Cime, which is the last day of the Dolomites hike before ending the trek in Cortina, the site of the Winter Olympics in 2026. Still lots of WWI trenches and bunkers, and artifacts. If you know what you are looking for there is still shrapnel lying all over the place. It was an area of heavy fighting under brutal conditions. It’s hallowed ground for more than just it’s intense beauty.

On day 3 of the TerraTreks 2019 Dolomites hike we started with a walk along the lake before the ascent to the Sennes Plateau. We stopped along the way for lunch at the Sennes Hut. Today was a day of varied terrain. We walked along a lake, climbed rocks, walked through a forest of evergreens, hiked over snow patches and finally came to our stop for the next two nights—the awesome Fanes Hutte; our private rooms opened to verandas with comfy chairs where we could sit, sip, and look out in the direction of tomorrow’s hike. I didn’t think it could get much better, but it did.

We’re back….after postponing the Dolomites hike in 2020 and 2021, it’s back! This year’s hike is full but we’ll be doing it again next year and it’s not too early to make plans. If you just can’t wait, visit the link in our profile and take a look at the Rosengarten hike, which still has a few spots left. Three years ago this was our first full day of hiking. After an early morning stretch with our yoga instructor/hiker Jeanette, we snuck into the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee while we waited for breakfast to begin then it was daypacks on and out the door. We started off toward Lago di Braies and kept climbing until we reached the summit of Kuhwiesengipfel at 2140m where we signed the book, took some great pictures of wildflowers with the Dolomites all around, relaxed for a bit and ate lunch. We continued on to Pragser Kaser and around the Schwarzberg down to Grunwaldalm, and then back to our lodge. It was the easiest day we did with an elevation gain of about 2650 over 6.2 miles. After hitting the bar, showers, and dinner, it was time for bed. From our balconies we watched the moon reflecting off Lago di Braies and fell asleep to the gentle lapping of water against the lakeshore. A great first day!
