Where is Benin?
It’s a country in West Africa near Togo, Nigeria and Ghana. If you are not completely sure which part of Africa your heritage is from, it’s mostly some from one or more of these 4 countries. That is where the majority of the slave trade took place! If you’ve seen the movie Woman King, Benin is what modern day Dahomey is called.
The country is not super big on tourism yet so you can get a very local and authentic experience. You are able to visit the villages, hangout with locals, and learn about your culture and roots. The locals are very nice and friendly. They will welcome you HOME. The country is also very safe.
It’s a very enriching experience where you will learn about your ancestors and get a hands on experience.
Benin is also the birthplace of Voodoo, but not the Hollywood version that’s misinterpreted widely across America. You are able to see and learn for yourself the customs and traditions that have been going on for centuries.
