As we receive nominations for the 2023 Governor's Arts Awards, we're taking a look back at past awards recipients. This week's featured honoree is Sam Gilliam. Born in Tupelo, Miss., the 2007 Governor's Arts Awards recipient is well known for painting innovative and stylistically diverse artwork such as vibrant draped paintings on canvases and architecture.

As we focus on Sense of Place this month, we're eager to get a start now on this program that'll seek to create a communal sense ACROSS places.

It's gonna be a gamble, but we bet it's gonna be fun.

We want to see what can happen when we join creative minds across distance and field, and we'd like to present these works in late August, when we will be focusing on the art of travel.

If you're interested in being paired with another creative for the summer to create either a single work together or a couple works based on your experience together, let us know by emailing us at [email protected] with subject line: artroulette.

Sign up before June 10th.

I chose to make this photo in B&W because I liked the way the morning sunrise was lighting up the back of the boat. The contrast between the light and shadows intrigued me. The Lift Boats in the background just added some dimension to the scene.
