Are the Beaches in Cabo San Lucas Swimmable?

It depends! Because the city is at the tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, strong currents form at many Cabo San Lucas beaches, but there are some, like Medano Beach, that are good for swimming. While most are incredibly gorgeous to visit, you might be wondering “Are the beaches in Cabo San Lucas swimmable?” This destination wouldn’t be known for its safety and its fun activities like snorkeling if there weren’t any. As you explore the coastline, you’ll find that the best beach in Cabo San Lucas for swimming is Medano Beach. This is because the waves are relatively calm and the current is safe throughout most of the year. Other beaches, such as Lover’s beach are great for snorkeling, but other’s nearby, such as Divorce Beach is dangerous.

1. Medano Beach

Of all the swimmable beaches in Cabo, Medano is one of the most popular beaches for both visitors and locals. Located next to the downtown marina, this beach is lined by popular resorts, including Villa La Estancia Los Cabos. Here, you’ll see family and friends strolling along the gently crashing waves, building sandcastles, and kicking around soccer balls. With a number of beach clubs and restaurants, it’s one of the best beaches in Cabo San Lucas to spend the day at, especially since it’s a Blue Flag Beach.

2. Chileno Beach
Chileno Beach is also a Blue Flag Beach, but it stands out from other Cabo San Lucas beaches as a premier snorkeling destination. Many tours stop here, but you can also visit with your own equipment. There’s plenty of parking, clean bathrooms, and palapas and rental umbrellas to keep you cool, making it one of the most popular beaches to visit.

3. Santa Maria Beach
While it’s not as popular as the nextdoor Chileno Beach, Santa Maria is the best beach in Cabo San Lucas for swimming due to its horseshoe shape. It also has a protected marine sanctuary that’s perfect for snorkeling. This Blue Flag Beach has public access and restrooms, but there’s very little shade, so be sure to bring your own umbrella and chairs for a day at Santa Maria Beach.

4. Lover’s Beach

Only accessible by boat, Lover’s Beach is the best beach in Cabo San Lucas for swimming at Land’s End. At the tip of the peninsula, Lover’s Beach has calm, clear water, but on the other side, Divorce Beach has the rough waves and strong currents that give it its name. Despite being one of the most popular beaches, there are no vendors, so bring your own equipment and snacks if you want to sail out here for the day.

5. Monuments Beach
For surfers, Monuments is one of the best beaches in Cabo San Lucas to catch a wave at, especially with its view of the iconic Cabo Arch. While it is one of the swimmable beaches in Cabo, there are some rocks and sea urchins to watch out for, and beginning surfers might want to start out somewhere else.”
