OFFICIAL PARADE COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENT.
The Annual AOH Girardville St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee met this morning to determine the best course of action in dealing with the effects of Wednesday’s nor’easter that dumped almost a foot of snow in Schuylkill County. Following discussion with Girardville Borough officials and snow removal contractors, the Parade Committee has made the decision to postpone this year’s parade until Saturday, April 14th, 2018, for the safety of our marchers, bands, participants, spectators, and townspeople.
Our economic resources are limited. Every cent of fundraising goes back into our parade. Snow removal cost – even for a small town like Girardville – runs into thousands of dollars. The Girardville Borough informed us it cannot assist in the snow removal needed to open up the town for Saturday and the parade itself does not have the financial resources to pay for it.
Street work that was planned for the later part of these week to fill the potholes dotting the parade route had to be cancelled. Cold patch will not stick to wet roads. Lots are unable to be cleared and the snow removed to allow for sufficient parking. We are concerned about mud as the temperatures are rising. There are very justified fears that it would be disastrous for a large number of people and vehicles to enter town, not have enough parking for the large buses, and possibly risk damaging expensive equipment, instruments, costuming, and vehicles. The safety and wellbeing of our marchers, bands, participants, and spectators - as well as that of our townsfolk, is paramount.
The Parade Committee has rescheduled the 15th Annual AOH Girardville St. Patrick’s Day Parade for Saturday, April 14th, 2018, starting at 12 noon. We march late, but we march on!!!
The Parade Committee is a very small group of dedicated volunteers who work all year long to make this parade happen once a year. We express our heartfelt apologies to all our loyal spectators, supporters, participants, bands, and vendors and sincerely regret any anxiety or inconvenience rescheduling the parade to April 14th may cause.
While the weather may not have been in our corner the last two years, our parade family has had our back for the past fifteen. The Girardville Irish Parade will never be cancelled. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in our county and brings significant revenue into area businesses both north and south of the mountain. We must honor our commitment to our ad and band sponsors and those who contribute to our parade’s fundraising throughout the year. And most of all, we must keep our promise to the many to whom this parade brings so much joy.
The Parade Committee hopes that everyone who can will join us at the Parade on Saturday April 14th, 2018. We are saddened that some of the participants, bands, organizations, AOH/LAOH divisions, and spectators who planned on being with us this coming Saturday may not be able to rearrange their schedules to be with us on April 14th. You will be truly missed, and we hope you can return to us in 2019!
All marchers, entries, and vendors who were registered are being contacted by Joanne Kitsock, our parade coordinator, with the updated date and information. The press was present at this morning’s parade meeting and the news has already begun hitting the TV and media.
This year, our 15th Annual AOH St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the biggest little St. Patrick’s Day Parade this side of the Atlantic, is going to be the latest on the calendar but late or not, in honor of St. Patrick and our Irish heritage, we march on! Fifteen and Counting!
For further information on the rescheduled date, contact Joanne Kitsock at 570-617-0400.
Thank you for understanding and your continued support.
See you at the Parade on April 14th! !
