Songkran is a traditional festival celebrated in Thailand, also known as the Thai New Year. The festival is held annually from 13th to 15th April and is one of the most important events in the country. Songkran is a time for family reunions, spiritual reflection, and festive celebrations.

The origins of Songkran can be traced back to ancient times when people used to pour water on Buddha statues as a way of purification. Over the years, the tradition evolved into a water festival where people splash water on each other as a way of showing respect, cleansing themselves of bad luck, and welcoming the New Year.

During the Songkran festival, the streets of Thailand are filled with people carrying water guns, buckets, and water-filled balloons. They roam around the city, spraying water on anyone they come across. The festival is a great way to escape the heat and humidity of Thailand's hot season, which falls around April.

Songkran is a time for family gatherings, where people travel back to their hometowns to celebrate with their loved ones. The festival is also a time for reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Tourists from around the world flock to Thailand to experience the unique and exciting atmosphere of the Songkran festival.

Wat Phra Singh | Don’t miss when you visit Chiang Mai

Built in 1345, the Temple is located now in the old quarter of Chiang Mai town. It houses the North’s most revered Buddha statue, Phra Phuttha Sihing which is enshrined in Vihan Lai Kham, a chapel that features exquisite woodcarvings and northern style murals.
Each year, during the Songkran festival, Phra Phutthasihing is carried in a parade procession around town so locals can bath the image with scented water, which brings good luck according to a traditional belief.
In the temple also houses Phra Maha Chedi Dhat (Giant Stupa). According to the Lanna belief, the stupa spirit specially protects those who born in the Year of the Dragon.

‘Thailand Pass’ registration scheme to be lifted from 1 July 2022

Thailand’s Centre of COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today approved the removal of the Thailand Pass registration scheme and an US$10,000 health insurance requirement for foreign visitors, effective 1 July, 2022. Both requirements were initially removed for Thai nationals from 1 June, 2022.

From 1 July, 2022, foreign nationals are only required to show proof of either a certificate of vaccination or a negative RT-PCR or professional ATK test result within 72 hours of travel. These can be in a print or digital format. Random checks will be made on arrivals at Thailand’s international airports or land border checkpoints (in 22 provinces). Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers who are random checked and who are unable to show proof of a pre-arrival negative test will be required to undergo a professional ATK test at the point of entry.

From 1 June, 2022, foreign nationals are still required to apply for a Thailand Pass, with essential information including passport details, vaccination, and an US$10,000 health insurance policy. The system will then automatically issue a QR code for the applicants. Thais will be exempt from a Thailand Pass registration.

Upon arriving in Thailand, vaccinated travellers must undergo entry screening, and will then be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers who are able to upload proof of a negative RT-PCR or professional ATK test within 72 hours of travel via the Thailand Pass system will also be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

The CCSA also approved further easing of nationwide COVID-19 controls with three colour-coded zones: The Pilot Tourist Areas or blue zones, the Surveillance or green zone, and the Areas under Stringent Surveillance or yellow zone.

Night-time entertainment venues; such as, pubs, bars and karaoke lounges in the green and blue zones will be allowed to resume operation, including the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on the premises up till 24.00 Hrs. However, all venues are told to strictly adhere to the prevention guidelines.

Visa Global Travel Intentions Study listed Thailand as the fourth most attractive travel destination in the world.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that Thailand has been rated as the fourth most attractive travel destination in the world post-pandemic, with Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Hua Hin being the top Thai cities global travellers search online, according to Visa Global Travel Intentions Study 2021.
The study, which was carried out during January-October 2021, analysed data from over 7,000 keywords searched by travellers from 62 countries as well as Thailand’s travel information, to five Thai tourist cities and travellers’ sentiments regarding the pandemic’s impact on travel situation.
According to the study, top three motivations for global travellers intending to visit Thailand are leisure pursuits (30%), the chance to escape and relax (25%), and outdoor adventure (18%). This demonstrates visitors are looking for stress-free holidays that provide optimum opportunities to relax, get outdoors, and leave the worries of the pandemic behind.
The study also revealed that, when in Thailand, tourists are most likely to head for activities and attractions that have made Thailand famous. The top activity preferences are going for a famous Thai massage, eating Thai food at cafes and restaurants, spending time at their resort, and embracing Thai culture; such as, visiting a Buddhist temple.
Visa cited a study by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) that Thailand’s tourism industry is showing signs of recovery with increasing visitor numbers over the next three years expected to reach around 46.96 million by the end of 2024. The ongoing relaxation of tourist entry requirements throughout the year should make it easier for tourists to return to Thailand.

The 5th of December each year has always been a significant day, because it commemorates the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, “The Father of the Nation.” His Majesty is fondly remembered for his kindness and compassion and was considered as an inspirational role model father who was devoted not only to his family but to his people and is still very much revered and remains in the hearts of the people.
