1. Bullpen Day Use Area (near Camp Verde, AZ)
this swimming hole has plenty of shade, cliff jumping and a rope swing.
2. Verde River (near Cottonwood, AZ)
the verde river is a great spot for kayaking. you can rent kayaks or bring your own. fun for the whole family!
3. Tonto Natural Bridge (near Strawberry, AZ)
this state park boasts the largest known travertine bridge in the world. entrance fee of $7/adult and $4/child. children 6 and under are free. open 9am-5pm.
4. the crack (near Sedona, AZ)
this popular swimming hole can be reached via the Bell Trail. avoid hiking in the heat of the day as there is limited shade. parking is free. dog friendly.
5. West Clear Creek
the west clear creek wilderness is a stunning canyon carved out by west clear creek. the point trail is pictured here.
6. Blue Ridge Reservoir (near Happy Jack, AZ)
also referred to as C.C. Cragin Reservoir. since it is a canyon lake, there is very little shoreline access around the reservoir. this makes it a popular spot for kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing.
7. Walnut Canyon National Monument (near Flagstaff, AZ)
the one mile island trail provides access to 25 cliff dwellings. park hours are 9am to 5pm. there is a $25 entrance fee or you can use your National Park pass.
8. Clear Creek Reservoir (near Winslow, AZ)
this is a popular spot for kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding and swimming. start your adventure at McHood Park. there is a $7 day-use fee per vehicle which can be paid via card at the self-pay kiosk.
9. Lava River Cave (near Flagstaff, AZ)
the lava river cave was formed by a volcanic eruption. don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes, bring warm layers and a source of light as the cave is pitch black.
🚗all of these places are within a 2-3 hour drive from Phoenix. when participating in outdoor activities, remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and pack out your trash.
