A historic and unprecedented event: First-ever scaling of the General Sherman at Sequoia National Park in Tulare County. Members of the Giant Sequoia Land Coalition (GSLC), including managers, scientists, and conservationists, collaborated to assess the General Sherman Tree for potential Bark Beetle threats.
Over the past four years, as a result of extreme impacts of climate change, up to 20% of giant sequoias, the largest trees on Earth, have been lost. The General Sherman Tree, which has endured past droughts and wildfires, showed minimal beetle activity, and was deemed to be in good health!
Monitoring the General Sherman Tree will assist in establishing a monitoring system for both individual tree health and the broader sequoia grove population. Tulare County is among the 11 land management entities collaborating with the GSLC, poised to directly gain from the scientific data that will facilitate the establishment of a monitoring system for Balch Park.
