Visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks this holiday weekend? Use these tips to make your final plans for a great trip. And, here's some extra items to remember:

- Expect Delays: Increased traffic is expected, especially during peak hours. Be prepared for delays at park entrances, visitor centers, shuttle stops, and restrooms.
- Arrive Early: To avoid long lines, arrive before 9:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m.
- Fireworks Prohibited: Fireworks are strictly prohibited within the parks.
- River Safety: Stay out of the rivers and use extreme caution on slippery rocks near the water. The rivers are extremely cold, swift, and dangerous.

Did you know? Tulare County was once home to one of the largest lakes in California. That is where the County’s name derived from, as well. The Tule plant was often seen around the County’s lakes and marshy areas. However, it is rarer to see these plants today, as the lake dried in 1889. Although the lake remains dry, it made a brief comeback after the local flooding of 2023.

A historic and unprecedented event: First-ever scaling of the General Sherman at Sequoia National Park in Tulare County. Members of the Giant Sequoia Land Coalition (GSLC), including managers, scientists, and conservationists, collaborated to assess the General Sherman Tree for potential Bark Beetle threats.

Over the past four years, as a result of extreme impacts of climate change, up to 20% of giant sequoias, the largest trees on Earth, have been lost. The General Sherman Tree, which has endured past droughts and wildfires, showed minimal beetle activity, and was deemed to be in good health!

Monitoring the General Sherman Tree will assist in establishing a monitoring system for both individual tree health and the broader sequoia grove population. Tulare County is among the 11 land management entities collaborating with the GSLC, poised to directly gain from the scientific data that will facilitate the establishment of a monitoring system for Balch Park.
