It's been a while since I've gone on vacation! Here are some pictures from Ka'iwa Ridge (Lanikai Pillbox) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Had to drive there and there was definitely some climbing involved, so I probably wouldn't go solo... but definitely my favorite part of the trip.

Scholar Huang's Residence at the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan. Apparently built in 1877 and rebuilt in 2001?

The overall Center was pretty nice but I wouldn't go again by myself. It would probably be fun with a good friend or a group though - other than some exhibitions and performances, there were lots of cute shops and DIY stuff.

Taipei Botanical Garden, kind of near the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. I had no idea this was here but it was definitely worth walking through. It must be a lovely place to just relax and enjoy, especially in better weather and assuming the mosquitoes aren't out in full force!

Wishing you health, happiness, and laughter from Taiwan! I'm back for a few weeks but probably still won't be posting much because I'm here to take a short intensive Chinese course (in fact, I should be studying now for tomorrow's test!).

The program I'm in included an optional trip to Shifen, about an hour's drive from the center of Taipei and known for its waterfall and as the place to release sky lanterns. The lanterns turned out to be more fun than I expected🏮.

Not too bad, East Bay! Not bad at all 😍.

Even though Coyote Hills is on my way home from work, this is only my second time going (and to be honest, I only went because my power went out, so I figured... might as well). I should take more advantage of it being so close 🙃.

Been busy lately (working "overtime" and taking two separate Chinese courses with the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning) so it was good to get out for a bit. Hope you have a chance (or many chances) to take a break too!

What a nice day 😊. Sparkly water, warm sun, cool breeze, not too many people (I guess because there are lots of beach options in this area?). A seal also popped up at one point! Though I didn't get it on camera.

It's been a bit difficult adjusting back to real life this time post vacation, so I'm trying to continue some habits I picked up (like walking to the grocery store if there's time)!

Ironically, one of the things I missed most while I was in Taiwan was the sunny California weather... which of course is missing these days! At least everything is green now 🙃. I wonder how full this creek will get before this rainy season ends...

Be careful to step over (not on!) the raised threshold when you go into temples. Inside, there are many different gods for different things - of fisherman for safe journeys, of war, of doing well in school, etc. You can draw your fortune, pick up charms for luck, ask questions (and then throw red blocks to get an answer)...

I don't know if this is true of all temples or not, but this one in Fangyuan town, Changhua county was mostly paid for by donations. The names of people who donated are engraved on the walls/doors/pillars/etc..

No problem with taking pictures inside 📸 😉.

Crossing the Dazhi Bridge with a view of the Grand Hotel and Dajia Riverside Park. There's a separate walkway for pedestrians/bikes, which is nice. Doesn't the bridge look like a dragon boat?!

Happy New Year!! I went to Tiger Mountain (虎山) about four hours early in the rain on New Year's Eve because I heard it's a popular spot for watching the Taipei 101 fireworks. The view was totally not worth the wait because of the clouds! No regrets though - I knew there was a chance it wouldn't work out, but I also wasn't up for being in the crowd closer to 101. If I hadn't gone, I would have wondered what I missed 😊.
