Scholar Huang's Residence at the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan. Apparently built in 1877 and rebuilt in 2001?
The overall Center was pretty nice but I wouldn't go again by myself. It would probably be fun with a good friend or a group though - other than some exhibitions and performances, there were lots of cute shops and DIY stuff.

Taipei Botanical Garden, kind of near the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. I had no idea this was here but it was definitely worth walking through. It must be a lovely place to just relax and enjoy, especially in better weather and assuming the mosquitoes aren't out in full force!

Wishing you health, happiness, and laughter from Taiwan! I'm back for a few weeks but probably still won't be posting much because I'm here to take a short intensive Chinese course (in fact, I should be studying now for tomorrow's test!).
The program I'm in included an optional trip to Shifen, about an hour's drive from the center of Taipei and known for its waterfall and as the place to release sky lanterns. The lanterns turned out to be more fun than I expected🏮.

Even though Coyote Hills is on my way home from work, this is only my second time going (and to be honest, I only went because my power went out, so I figured... might as well). I should take more advantage of it being so close 🙃.
Been busy lately (working "overtime" and taking two separate Chinese courses with the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning) so it was good to get out for a bit. Hope you have a chance (or many chances) to take a break too!

What a nice day 😊. Sparkly water, warm sun, cool breeze, not too many people (I guess because there are lots of beach options in this area?). A seal also popped up at one point! Though I didn't get it on camera.

It's been a bit difficult adjusting back to real life this time post vacation, so I'm trying to continue some habits I picked up (like walking to the grocery store if there's time)!
Ironically, one of the things I missed most while I was in Taiwan was the sunny California weather... which of course is missing these days! At least everything is green now 🙃. I wonder how full this creek will get before this rainy season ends...

Be careful to step over (not on!) the raised threshold when you go into temples. Inside, there are many different gods for different things - of fisherman for safe journeys, of war, of doing well in school, etc. You can draw your fortune, pick up charms for luck, ask questions (and then throw red blocks to get an answer)...
I don't know if this is true of all temples or not, but this one in Fangyuan town, Changhua county was mostly paid for by donations. The names of people who donated are engraved on the walls/doors/pillars/etc..

Hehuanshan (合歡山) is gorgeous. Lucked out on the weather, too... supposedly it's usually freezing (literally) up there.
Difficult to get up there without a car, but definitely worth the trip if you can go!

Almost ready! First had to figure out how to maximize luggage space - but not so much that I'll have issues walking to/from and using public transportation by myself. Decided on a carry-on suitcase (which I'll check), a backpack, laptop bag, and a smaller bag inside the biggest suitcase (I'll separate the smaller bag so there'll be more space for gifts/souvenirs on the way back! The suitcase handle can be pulled through a pocket on the smaller bag so I'll be able to roll and carry them together with one hand if needed).
I started packing early because I was feeling a bit stressed about it... having a checklist was really helpful (even though I was mostly creating it as I was packing)! Especially to double check whether something was already packed after I already "tetrised" it in...

Work has been particularly busy these days, so I probably won't post for a while. The only pictures I'm taking these days are of my commute... now in the dark going both ways 😅. At least I have my buddy Orion to keep me company in the mornings!

For the few days I was in Vienna, I do wish I had planned ahead more - the concert that I would have *loved* to go to was definitely sold out waaaaay before I even thought to check. I still got to go to one of the best concert halls in the world (awkwardly cropped picture included to prove it)! But not really with one of the best orchestras performing...

I didn't find the building at the top particularly interesting but it was cool to be above the clouds without being in a plane.

Danshui / Tamsui, at the end of Taipei's MRT (the subway) red line. A nice place to stroll by the water, shop for trinkets, play some games, and eat very tall frozen yogurts! Unfortunately, I only have pictures of water right now... I'll capture more things next time 🙃.
I haven't been yet, but there's also supposed to be a Lover's Bridge (I don't know why it's called that) and a historical fort (Fort San Domingo) that was built by the Spanish, taken over by the Dutch, and inhabited by the British at some point. All I can say about the fort from personal experience is... if you're like me, don't try to find it at night because you might accidentally drag your friends to random other places instead 😅.
