“We may run, walk, stumble, drive, or fly, but let us never lose sight of the reason for the journey, or miss a chance to see a rainbow on the way.” - Gloria Gaither

Adirondack chairs adorning the bare coastal rocks of Nova Scotia make for an unexpected rainbow too - not to mention an enticing place to sit and pause the journey. [Photo: Mark Malby]

It’s a seal’s life, especially here in the Bay of Fundy where life takes a decidedly slower pace than the day-to-day further west. This Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina) takes a time out from the chill waters on one of the local islets, seemingly practicing a few yoga poses in the summer sunlight. [Photo: Mark Malby]

Looking almost like a ‘bridge to nowhere’, the 8 mile Confederation Bridge actually connects the mainland of eastern Canada with the island province of Prince Edward Island. When it was completed in 1997 it replaced centuries of seasonal ferry service and gave the island year-long access to the mainland. It is the longest bridge in the world to cross ice-covered winter waters. [Photo: Mark Malby]

“Blackbird singing in the dead of night /
Take these broken wings and learn to fly /
All your life /
You were only waiting for this moment to arise…”

Alas, the Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) lacks the melodious song of its close relation, the European Blackbird. This lanky North American species - commonly seen foraging in flocks on lawns and in city parks - utters loud guttural squeaks with all the melodic appeal of a squeaky gate. Still the distinctive purple and chestnut sheen of its feathers do look handsome in the sunlight. And unlike the naturalised Starlings nearby, this one is at least a native species.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colours. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” – Terry Pratchet

There may be plenty of fish in the sea, true, but not all of them look as unique as the Whitemargin Unicornfish (Naso annulatus) - a proboscis-prominent species found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific. This one kindly raised its dorsal fins in a mock threat display at the last moment - or maybe it was just showing off to present a better picture. [Photo: Mark Malby]

Cloud Village
On rainswept mornings like these, a humble hamlet transforms into a ‘village in the clouds’. It’s an air of mystery we don’t often see at sea level.

Any photographer will tell you that it's all about recording light. And it is. But there's another side to the equation, the influence of time and serendipity that lie beyond your control. In a fast changing world, things only look 'just so' for a fraction in time - a minute, a few seconds. Case in point this sunburst which arrived just as I was exiting the boat on my homeward commute. It lasted long enough - with that ship at the epicentre - for a short volley of pictures. A minute later, the clouds had shifted, the illumination was gone and we were back to muted grey evening light. [photo: Mark Malby]

Japanese Crane at Kushiro

It is always a thrill to see an endangered species in the wild. Here in the marshlands near Kushiro is one of the few places in north Asia where you can spot, with some certainty, the rare Red-crowned or Japanese Crane (Grus japonensis), a bird long regarded as a symbol of longevity, fidelity and good luck.

A hundred years ago there were only 10 breeding pairs left in the country. Now there are over a thousand of these graceful birds, with a population climbing by the year - thanks to the efforts of local citizens and strong conservation movement. It’s always good to hear a success story.

That moment from the ski hills of Niseko, when the clouds clear and you finally see the volcanic dome of Mount Yōtei (マッカリヌプリ) in all its glory. With an elevation of 1,898 m (6,227 ft), this is easily the most recognisable peak in all Hokkaido. [photo: Mark Malby]

“I think I have this thing where everybody has to think I'm the greatest. And if they aren't completely knocked out and dazzled and slightly intimidated by me, I don't feel good about myself” ― Roald Dahl, Fantastic Mr. Fox

There is unquestionably something dazzling about seeing a fox in the wild, pausing long enough to gaze at you from across the snow, before slipping off on its mysterious way. [photo: Mark Malby]

For those who remember that ghostly, abandoned Amusement Park in the Hoyao Miyazaki film “Spirited Away”, an off season Japanese ski village — all lit up, but entirely unpeopled — had something of the same mood to it. Beautiful to walk though, but a little unnerving. (Photo: Mark Malby)

While actual spring is still well over a month away, when you come across a blossoming plum tree one warm February afternoon, vibrant with bees and butterflies, it’s hard not to feel that surge of spring in your heart.

While this may look like a scene from some post-Apocalyptic thriller (“The Last Telephone Booth on Earth”) - it’s actually a cheerful proclamation (here on a cool winter night) that the Lunar New Year is coming.

“Wishing you a very Happy New Year” and “May everything go your way,” is a rough translation.

February 10 this year marks the start of “The Year of the Dragon” - and for people across the world (and particularly here in East Asia) it’s a time of feasts and performances, family gatherings and jubilant optimism.
