ZEM, meaning earth in Czech, is an upscale, avant-garde restaurant combined with a twist of Japanese influences. Whilst part of the Hyatt ownership, under the brand of Andaz hotels, ZEM successfully does well to create its own image.

The golden brown interior exemplifies the very meaning of ZEM and all the dishes were clearly rich and very satisfying.

We started with the trout velouté and kimche squid which were the real selling point of our experience. Two meat dishes of rabbit Svičkova and pork knuckle ensued, which were presented almost as impressively as the first courses. Whilst the pork dish did not blow me away it was nicely balanced with a generous size portion of horseradish chlebíček. As for the Svičkova I was extremely impressed by the sauce. The dish was also a unique concept in the mindset of Czech cooking by having rabbit instead of beef. I particularly liked how the dumplings appeared inside the cutlet; a subtle addition to achieving uniqueness.

Service was personal and attentive without any measure of being forced or invasive. Compliments to the Slovak waiter who knew his way around the menu like the back of his hand.

I would like to return for a coffee or cocktail one day on passing. Overall I can certainly recommend coming here for fine dining or special occasion if degusting authentic Czech food is your cup of tea.

Two mains, starters and a dessert and round of classy drinks🍸came to 2,800 Czech crowns (circa 95 euros).

Don't forgot the option of ensconcing yourself at their bar to oversee chefs busying themselves at a repertoire of classic dishes.

Pristina is not the first place people think of going to for their summer holiday. Unfamiliar and skeptical of the place some might be; in truth a welcoming and lively city awaits. The streets, night or day, are as safe as Prague or Lisbon for that matter. Within them contain chic, new cocktail bars, eye-catching landmarks and cafes only waiting to be written and talked about from bloggers and globetrotters alike. As evening swings round some cafes transform into music venues, adding a cool laid back vibe I admire of the capital.

In my book, the city ranks high in friendliness and contains some of the best value establishments I've encountered around Europe. Seating areas for eating and drinking are as clean and well kept as anywhere on the continent often accompanied with a smile and genuine sense of curiosity.

There's no doubt that the National Library, Pristina in Kosovo is profound. It's apparently ninety-nine roofs, which I didn't count, are said to reflect the qeleshe (or plis) hats worn by ethnic Albanians.

I enjoyed walking around the fittings and furnishings from yesteryear which took me right back to my desks at school. Glancing at the building from the top of the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa on the other side of the busy George Bush highway dividing them is also worthwhile.

You can reconnoitre the perimeter of the library along its paved pathways without any obstacles. That said, getting a view of it from a height up close is practically impossible without a drone.

On my couple of visits there one of the caretakers opened up various rooms, whilst people were setting up for an event that evening. The library is open seven days a week but if you ask nicely he'll give you access to some other parts the building.

Within its confines is also an American Corner, set up by the US Embassy. It is aimed at improving relations between the two countries and was opened in 2003. There you can find numerous publications focused mainly on English language learning and a section dedicated to great American authors.

Hotel Castagnola in Lugano, 🇨🇭 Switzerland is princely in appearance with a relaxed ambiance undulating throughout the grounds. The tasteful garden sloping up from the gate to the front entrance cries out to be walked through. Peppered with banana trees and date palms, it makes for a rather idyllic setting.

What I instantly liked about the hotel is its 1920s feel. It adopts an air of faded gentility as guests are waited on hand and foot by waiters with bow ties. A woman sitting alone in a brimmed hat and glass of bubbly looks out pensively to the garden. It adds to the feeling of yesteryear.

As far as the cocktails went they were everything I'd hoped for. At 20CHF for a long drink, it was no pricier than in any other high-end hotel or establishment in a world class city. The difference is this is 🇨🇭 Switzerland, where costs are reputably high, but for the best contender in Lugano the bill came as no shock.

After sinking six drinks between the three of us and handfuls of cashew nuts, Queen olives and canapes, I avoided having to pay three figures. Thus, I left satisfied.

Three cocktails, two mocktails and a panaché came to an agreeable 90 CHF.

Mělník District covers an area encompassing some significant landmarks in the Central Bohemian Region of Czechia. For a start you can stand at the confluence of two of the major rivers running through the country; the Elba and Vltava. Additionally, it's possible to scale a small hill home to some eye catching rock formations.

What can be agreeable for some is how flat the terrain is around here. The respected and beautiful Kokošínsk – Máchův kraj rolls into its northern most part offering a cornucopia of surprises to unfold.

Walking between the villages and small towns affords pleasant views across farmland and bridle paths. Dare I mention there's even a tinge of being back in England here. Locals ramble past at quite a lick, uttering a swift dobry den (good day). It's sunny and bright and this window of mild weather mid-April is a small blessing.

My latest video on 🇸🇲 San Marino is OUT. For those who haven't been there and are looking for a place to drop out over the spring – WATCH THIS before. 1st of April sees a time when new heads of state are appointed and the climate should be mild and bright.

ENJOY!

Reflecting on 2022 involved some nice European trips. These included (from top left to right) the following destinations: 🇸🇲 San Marino, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇲🇪 Montenegro, 🇭🇷 Croatia and 🇧🇦 Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Out of these destinations which would you prefer to check out (or return to) and why?

My latest on Zagreb, Croatia (recently out) gives a brief account of how quiet the city is in summer. With the added bonus of getting some pretty decent fish to munch on this merits at least a stopover on any visit into the Balkans or Dalmatian coast.

I will be releasing two videos on San Marino and Italy pretty soon, including China Town in Milan!

There is a charming little fishing village in the south east of Malta called Marsaxlokk. The harbour is a painter's dream and reminded me of the array of colourful boats I'd seen in West Africa.

Marsaxlokk, pronounced with a sh sound on the x, also has an impressive historical timeline. Turks apparently moored their fleet on these waters and Napoleon placed his army there in 1798. Furthermore G.Bush senior and Gorbachev even held a summit on a war ship off the coast in 1989.

Coming here on Sunday is the best day to experience the fishermen bringing in fresh produce. It's also the only day they sell directly to consumers. Other days they make a journey around the island, often offloading their catch near the Capital, Valletta.
In a way it's no wonder as the village contains 70% of Malta's fishing fleet and thus the concentration of eateries are impressive.

I felt fortunate to have arrived on a Saturday ready to gawk at the melange of vegetables, seafood and fish first thing on Sunday morning. Red snapper, bass, mackerel, octopus, squid, shrimps and even eel were just some delights I was able to feast my eyes on.

Make sure you're up and out here early in order to make the most of what's on display. By 1pm the vendors will be packing up and thus you'll miss out on most of the action.

Owing to the fleeting tourists and fisherman, the harbour promenade can be calm one moment and yet full of life another.

Besides the plentiful seafood, the village is perfectly positioned in order to explore the coves of Delimara farther east. There are sea caves and sublime coastal walks to reconnoitre. Coming here in April and May is an ideal time before the fierce heat is upon you. It's only now however that the water from a less agreeable 16 degrees celsius in spring becomes an inviting 20+ degrees in June.

What's your preference?

EXPLORING AN ABANDONED TRAIN GRAVEYARD

Along the side of a train line in the north of Budapest lies an abandoned train graveyard. The platform of Istvántelek faces the site and can be reached fairy easily from the centre of Budapest. Stepping outside however gives onlookers a very different feel to the civilized bustle of downtown.

Brambles, broken glass, snapped and burned planks of wood cake the floors of these depots. Some areas here really have been left for well over half a century!

The history of this area in fact stems back over 100 years from its first construction by the Hungarian State Railway. The depots were primarily used for repairing locomotives. Every wagon undoubtedly has a story of their own since this era. As you brush past these rusting frames, you really do get a feeling for the long journeys they've endured.

The buildings interspersed around the complex reminded me of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. The imposing water towers looming over buildings added to that feeling and eeriness. It's even believed than many train cars from this yard, transported Hungarian Jews to this very camp. What a harrowing thought.

Getting in requires a bit of perseverance but once inside you'll have most of the compound to explore to yourself.

The stone circle of menhirs on the outskirts of Kutna Hora were brought about as late as 2012. They were purposefully erected to add harmony to the surrounding countryside. The stones resemble nothing really like Stonehenge but the location and view from the site is far more impressive. Consequently...

16/08/2020

The joy of stepping out of your front door, is the stretch of embankment dotted with food stalls and drinks tents. People talk to you at the drop of a hat and gesticulate towards their produce jovially. I'm in Prague and welcome to Smichovská naplavka. On the opposite side of the river, the Farmers' Saturday market takes place weekly.

Of the score or so of tents; I counted almost a dozen different cuisines. I couldn't help but notice the Nigerian dishes wafting their aromas from two stalls down from where I was. From pounded yams to succulent stews, it was all too irresistible to the eye. Whilst the prices were a little elevated, the quality made up for it.

I often find portions are not particularly plenteous in food markets. Sucking on good value drinks for me however is a good start.

Strollers stopped to repose on beach chairs as gluttons and foodies took stall snacks to outside seating positioned on the riverbank ledge. People here idled their time riverside with the backdrop of the charcoal coloured St. Peter and Paul Church at Vyšehrad. Boats casually drifted past and sauntering down the New Town naplavka still echoed a certain somnolence from the pandemic.

The weather was a perfect 25 degrees Celsius. After sinking a Cuba libre and glass of passable French white, I headed over to the bevy of swans under a nearby railway bridge.
