Sochan is a plant native to the Smokies, also known as cut-leaf coneflower. It has been gathered and used in traditional cooking by the Cherokee People for thousands of years.

In 2019 the park entered into a historic agreement in which registered members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians (EBCI) can obtain a gathering permit and collect sochan within the park for traditional purposes. Park and EBCI staff work together to monitor sochan abundance in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of this program.

On a visit to the Smokies, you might see people legally gathering sochan in the park. Gatherers can be recognized by the orange bag issued to permit holders. Please give gatherers space and respect as they participate in this traditional practice.

This is already the 8th or 9th fire since August. Sorry everyone but this is exactly why we do not offer fire pits. One rogue ember can destroy 100’s of acres and structures extremely quick. All of those beautiful leaves are now on the ground and very flammable.

Dollywood said it has suspended entry into the park and is monitoring the situation with officials.
