Why girl empowerment?

In February of 2018, I went to Uganda on a girl empowerment service trip.

While there, I was able to look into the eyes of hundreds of girls and tell them they were beautiful.

It had a huge impact on me because of the impact it had on them.

What I realized soon after that trip is that girls here need just as much of that as girls in Uganda.

To be told they’re beautiful.

To be told they’re talented.

To be told they matter.

But more than that.

They need to see it.

They need to see with their own eyes the kinds of things WE see in them.

That’s where I come in. 💚

Why girl empowerment?

In February of 2018, I went to Uganda on a girl empowerment service trip.

While there, I was able to look into the eyes of hundreds of girls and tell them they were beautiful.

It had a huge impact on me because of the impact it had on them.

What I realized soon after that trip is that girls here need just as much of that as girls in Uganda.

To be told they're beautiful.

To be told they're talented.

To be told they matter.

But more than that.

They need to see it.

"Oh, Robin. We are chatting away about you on our drive home. Your head needs to hit the pillow tonight knowing you did something amazing today.

I know you put a tremendous amount of work into this event, and we are so grateful for every bit of it.

These girls were empowered and given such a confidence boost by this little idea that popped in your head.

Most of all, I think they were inspired by watching YOU take the reins on something like this (and so many other projects), and creating wonderful memories. I know my girl feels this way.

Doug got teary looking at the video, and when we got in the car, he said, “I would have driven 1,000 miles tonight for that.”

"A couple of months ago, I decided to sign Cadee up for something and didn't tell her. It was a special kind of awesome for precious teenage girls who need to hear from someone other than their parents how truly talented, beautiful, and important they are. Robin is exceptionally talented herself and has a desire to speak truth and life into young girls. She gave the girls gifts, (several of which were created by other talented young ladies), took amazing photos of them, and put on this amazing evening to celebrate them. Last night, family and friends got to join us in Round Rock, Texas, to celebrate Cadee. It was perfect. I think we can all agree that it's been a rough year and Cadee needed the encouragement and love she was shown. Thank you so much, Robin, for giving us this opportunity to celebrate Cadee and for inviting others to join you in speaking life and love into her. Wish I had another daughter to do this again one day!"

All this pressure to fit in.

All the judgment when they don't.

When in reality, they were made to stand out.

To stand up.

To own who they are.

Now.

That's where I come in.

To show them.

The beauty that's already there.

This room.

16 years ago, we built a house for THIS room.

RWP, which pretty much started by accident, had turned into the real deal, and I needed a space worthy of my amazing clients.

So we built a house.

For THIS room.

During the time I used this RWP studio, it saw literally hundreds of precious newborns grow into adorable toddlers.

It held an awesome mini black and white couch I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to part with.

It saw baby bumps and graduating seniors and furry friends, big and small.

It saw established families and extended families and just beginning families.

It saw pretend goldfish, lots of naked butts (the baby kind), all. the. candy canes, and so many toothless smiles.

And the crumbs of so many first birthday smash cakes. (These were Pixel’s favorite shoots to clean up after.)

It saw sweet little 6-month old Weston holding his “chicks dig scars” sign after his kidney transplant. He just celebrated his 13th year as a transplant survivor.

It saw sweet little Ryan holding the same sign after his heart surgery. He is loved and missed by so many.

It saw sweet Reese in a basket full of Reese’s Pieces, screaming her tiny little lungs out while her mom and I couldn’t stop laughing. (Sorry, Reese!)

It saw sweet Taylor, red-faced and SO done with her photo shoot, flip off the camera in one of the most epic shots ever. (Sorry, Taylor!)

It's seen so much. It's heard so much. It held so much.

No. It HOLDS so much.

When we built the house for this room, I never could’ve imagined the impact it would have on my life.

How many of the clients who walked up those stairs and into this room would turn into life-long friends.

How hard it would be to hang up my hat for a time so I could focus on my own girls when their lives got busy.

How blessed I am that so many of the amazing people I met in this room embraced me and my business wholeheartedly when I picked my camera back up again.

As I hand the keys over to its new owners, today, I said good-bye to the house that holds THIS room.

But the memories made in this space will be cherished forever.

Seriously though, Oakley was an absolute gem during this shoot.

And I would've been super sad if we had missed out on this one perfect little "off" moment. 😊

It's the busy season for photographers everywhere, with holiday photos in full swing. So it wasn't surprising to see photographers around every corner tonight.

If I'm being honest though, I felt a little bad for those other photographers. Not every client can be as awesome as mine. With a sweet dog to boot. 💚
