It's been awhile since I shared my adventures but I am back!
While in Benton Harbor/ St Joseph, Michigan I went to Nola Roux restaurant. It us not a huge place and there were a few people dinning in so, I couldn't take a lot of pics in an effort not to disrupt the other diners.
They play video loop of several New Orleans Bands. Got to see some Trombone Shorty videos and the "Tiny Desk" performance while I ate.
The Food:
I ordered mushroom etouffee, red beans and rice, and seafood gumbo. I have to say everything I ordered came out hot and smelled amazing. I went to New Orleans 20 years ago so I honestly don't remember the food. But this definitely reminded of the authenticity of cajun food. Nothing was bright red in color and i was happy aboutthe absence if dyes to make the food attractive, the seafood was really good, everything tasted fresh. I normally don't eat crawfish because they are pretty briney-tasting but these were good.
My favorite dish surprisingly was the mushroom etouffee! It was so flavorful and I honestly forgot there wasn't any meat in it. The mushrooms were big and hearty. The gravy was just the right thickness. The rice was tender and fluffy, and went so well with everything. I scooped a bit of the etouffee in my red beans and rice and that took it up a couple notches!
The red beans and rice was so flavorful and had a lil bit of spice! The onions and peppers highlighted the tender beans.
The gumbo was also very flavorful and had some spice. It wasn't slimy like some gumbo I've had in the past. The base was rich and had a deep tomato flavor. With each dish they gave buttered French bread and it was perfect for dipping.
I got full quickly and took the rest back to my hotel. I reheated them for the best hotel breakfast ever...lol.
If you are in the area stop by and check them out!
