The M. E. N. trip is complete! They ate good, sipped good, went on tours, was invited to eat oxtails & play dominos with locals, rode horses, partied, got clean, had fancy dinners but most importantly they had conversations amongst themselves and other men they came across about being “men”, mental health and life!!

Starting off our summer series group travel is the M. E. N. (Motivate Empower Network) Barbados 🇧🇧. Celebrating life, Father’s Day, Juneteenth and bringing awareness to men’s mental health through travel!

Travel is a powerful tool to combat stress and anxiety. We thrive on new experiences, and traveling with LIVE! is always an experience!

As February comes to a close, we finish another Black History Month focusing on the history and travel of African Americans.

Travel has been an important part of the journeys of many African Americans.

Pioneers before us traveled domestically and internationally overcoming discrimination and other barriers, and inspiring generations to come.

In today’s globally-connected, social-media driven world, we get to watch travelers experience life abroad in real time.

Black people didn’t have the freedom to travel just anywhere. So, in 1936 Victor Hugo Green wrote “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” or simply, “The Green Book.” It was a travel guide for black people. Mr. Green published lodging, restaurants, and gas stations that did business with black people. This book kept them informed and safe from 1936 – 1966.

Today we have social media, travel influencers, travel companies and other online entities that feed black travelers' information on places we may be hesitant to travel as solo travelers or with family and friends. We are aways grateful for those that provide resources and reviews all over the world so that we are prepared when experiencing other countries and cultures.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers reach Texas and share the news of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This becomes known as Juneteenth with annual celebrations initially just in Texas but now in many other cities and states across the United States. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the US dating back to 1865.

By choosing to celebrate the last place in the South that freedom touched — reflecting the mystical glow of history and lore, memory and myth, as Ralph Ellison evoked in his posthumous novel, Juneteenth — we remember the shining promise of emancipation, along with the bloody path America took by delaying it and deferring fulfillment of those simple, unanticipated words in Gen. Granger’s original order No. 3: that “This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves.”

As a reflection of these travels, in his 1951 essay, I Choose Exile, author and poet Richard Wright asks, “Why have I decided to live beyond the shores of my native land?
It is because I love freedom and I tell you frankly that there is more freedom in one square block of Paris than there is in the entire United States!”

These travel experiences made a significant impact on the perception of travel as a form of transformation for African Americans.

I've been fortunate enough to travel to Paris (to include Disney Paris) more than 10x since 2016. I've traveled solo, as a single mother, with lovers and friends and I've even had the opportunity to curate a trip to Paris for the LIVE! Travel Group. Travelling internationally provides so much perspective outside of the American way of life we are accustomed to.

Formed by Art Clay and Ben Finley, the first Black Ski Summit took place in Aspen, Colorado in 1973 and was attended by over 350 skiers.

LIVE! Took its first Winter/Ski trip as a group in 2015 to Breckenridge, CO. Since then, I have visited and encouraged winter travel to places like Colorado, Germany & Iceland alike.

In 1955, Freddye Henderson and her husband, Jacob, opened Henderson Travel Service in Atlanta to assist African Americans who wanted to travel internationally. The agency planned and booked trips for thousands of black travelers including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1964 visit to Norway where he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.

LIVE! est circa 2013. We hope to solidify our legacy in history, and most importantly black history, such as the Hendersons. We are grateful for those who have paved the way for [us] to travel abroad as our most authentic selves. We have done some amazing things in some amazing countries. As we continue to evolve, the vibe will always be constant, regardless of the who or the where….we will always be LIVE!

Dr. Maya Angelou’s collection of essays from her 1993 book "Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey" now features an essay titled “Passports to Understanding.”

In her writing, the legendary essayist drops gem in her discussion of Black Travel and the miraculous transformation it can have on souls brave enough to embrace the journey.

It’s time to put our money where our mouth is! We have talked (and walked) a good travel game for more than 10 years successfully and notably without social media presence.

It’s more than just traveling, it’s about raising awareness, providing opportunities, sharing ideas, and coming together to curate life altering experiences for both those who can’t see past their neighborhood AND those with the aspirations and abilities to climb Mount Everest (all walks of life). I know if I want the impact of LIVE! to continue to grow and expand I have to climb from under this rock.

I pledge allegiance to authenticity, transparency and consistency to all travelers under God or whatever we used to say in elementary school.
