This is Humphrey. He is the leader of the Maguba Salvation Singers, one of our sponsored conservation groups and one of our most dedicated members. This is not the best picture as Tom took it and he was busy firefighting, but when he saw Humphrey, who had left church and run up to help with the fire, he just had to take it!

And the weird stick he is holding is one of our home-made fire beaters, used to beat down the flames in the hope of taking the oxygen away and stifling the fire.

Sadly, this year we have suffered 5 fires on our side. 4 of them were contained quite quickly but the 5th one caused a serious amount of damage.

One of the reasons why the fire was so big was that we had been so successful in preventing fires for years so there was more to burn.

It broke our hearts!

BUT over 150 community members showed up to help, and many of them were out there until gone 11pm.

The fires were lit on purpose by people with little understanding of the consequences of their actions.

And these fires destroy biodiversity, but also contribute to soil erosion and damage the water table making water harder and harder to access.

This is entirely preventable.

40 years ago, there was a law in Malawi specifying that no non-domestic fires were allowed after the 15th of August.

This makes a lot of sense as after the 15th of August the temperatures soar and the environment gets more and more dry but the law is no longer enforced.

If these fires were prevented, trees would naturally regenerate, ecosystems would be reborn. We would not need to plant trees to make up for the loss. Nature would do her work, far more successfully than humans ever could.

It just takes a tiny bit of education, key messages repeated over and over and over.

Zotheka!

5L water bottles!

We buy them to fill (and refill) the water flasks in the guest bedrooms.

Once empty we fill them with our own generated plastic waste, but also any litter we pick up on our walks. These are turned into ecobricks.

But right now, throughout the dry season, we have them filled with water, sitting by our gate, ready to be picked up by our conservation group members to help fight fires.

They are used to wet stumps which are then covered in soil.  Otherwise, tree stumps tend to reignite with any gusts of wind and start the fires again.

These containers are super useful, whether for us as ecobricks and fire fighting tools, but also for villagers who use them to carry/store water as they have a lid.

TREEZ, Zomba Forest Lodge's own conservation project, has been providing giant bamboo seedlings to our community conservation members as a reward for their environmental work and a bid to help reverse the deforestation trends rampant in Malawi.

The giant bamboo has a denser coln (centre) than other species , thus making it a great source of firewood, charcoal and construction material, while creating a wind/rainbreak for their homes - crucial considering the damage that exposure to heavy rains has on locally built houses.

Our groups are also preparing the seedling nurseries for both agroforestry and indigenous trees. The agroforestry trees are to be planted in their fields and the indigenous ones planted in their local copses (baby woodlands nestled between villages) and out on their conservation areas.

But most importantly, members are carrying out fire prevention activities (fire breaks, fire patrols, etc) as fires represent the biggest threat to any natural regeneration.

By preventing fires, trees have grown, with no help from us humans. Nature can do the growing bit. But humans must carry out the fire prevention work and pass on the fire prevention messages.

The fires are ALL man-made in Malawi.

What would Malawi look like if fires were prevented for 2 or 3 years? It would look lush and green and full of promise 💚
