Jaffna is one of the most beautiful towns located right on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. Jaffna is known for its predominant Tamil population and recognized as the cultural capital for Tamilians in Sri Lanka.

Since the railroad to Jaffna was destroyed in the war, taking the train all the way is not an option. However, if you really want to utilize the train in Sri Lanka, you can take the train north to the town of Vavuniya and from there catch a bus on to Jaffna.

There are a number of different buses from Colombo to Jaffna. The semi-luxury bus is more of just a normal bus and there is also a super-luxury bus.

Kandy is the hill capital of Sri Lanka with a great historical and religious background. Kandy is a city of kings where the last of all was King Sri Vikrama Rajasingha and it was the last kingdom of the country prior to gaining independence from the British in 1948. There are many historical and religious attractions to see in Kandy.

𝗕𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
The Inter-City Express is a cheap and fast way to travel to Kandy. The city has three trains coming in from Badula and two from Colombo. The trains have observational saloons and second class compartments that require prior booking.

𝗕𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱
There are a number of air conditioned intercity buses and other public and private buses that travel from Colombo to Kandy on a daily basis. Many buses, in fact, have a stop at the international airport. People often hire taxis, as they are easily available and are a safe way to travel even though this can be quite expensive. If you are going as a big group, then there are mini vans that can take you to Kandy comfortably.

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, you’re probably thinking about visiting Udawalawe National Park.

Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s smaller national parks at only 308.2 km². It is estimated that within this space over 500 elephants live. It’s simple really, a smaller space with a higher density of elephants increases your chances of seeing them!

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵

Udawalawe National Park is about a 2 hours drive from Mirissa, 1.5 hours from Ella, or 4 hours from Colombo.

If you plan on spending a night or two in Udawalalwe you can either take the public bus, hire a private driver, or drive yourself in a tuk-tuk (that’s what we did!) There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses around so this is a good option for those with time.

Alternatively, you can easily go on a day tour from places like Colombo, Galle, Ella, or Hikkaduwa to Udawalawe National Park. In fact, many tour offices will try to sell you this option.

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮

Sigiriya is a small town situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is popular for its main attraction which is the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The Sigiriya town is also in close proximity to the Dambulla town. Some of the other attractions in and around Sigiriya and Dambulla are Pidurangala Rock and Dambulla Cave Temple.

The fortress is also referred to as the Lion's Rock since it was designed to look like a lion stands tall amongst the jungle that surrounds it. Legends say that Sigiriya was called Alakamandava - the city of gods, built by the Hindu God of Wealth - Kubera. Kubera was known to rule Lanka before Ravana took over.

Historically speaking, archaeological evidence suggests that the caves in and around the fortress have been inhabited by humans right from the Mesolithic period. In 477 CE, King Kashyapa I is said to have shifted his kingdom's capital to Sigiriya, where he built a sophisticated city and fortress to protect it from intruders. After he lost a battle, Sigiriya was made into a Buddhist monastery complex.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵

The best way to reach Sigiriya Rock Fortress is to take a bus from either Dambulla or Habarane. You can enter either of the towns from any significant city by bus.

Another way is to take a train to Habarane, and then take a bus to Sigiriya.

𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮

Mirissa, which is surrounded by two sandy bays and divided by a rock island accessible only at low tide, feels secluded in comparison to Sri Lanka's other bigger tourist towns. While the peaceful dunes are peppered with bars and surf rentals, Mirissa's whale-watching boat tours steal the show from May to November.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮

𝗕𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
In Sri Lanka, the frequency of trains may be less in comparison to traveling by bus; however, in most cases, trains are quicker than bus travel. There’s a train from the Colombo Fort station every four hours for Weligama, which costs Rs 55-190 and takes about 2 hours and a few minutes. From Weligama Station to Mirissa is just 6 minutes by cab, costing Rs 170-220.

𝗕𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝘀
From the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal, there’s a bus every 2 hours to Matara Bus Station which takes about 5 hours to reach there, costing Rs 80-190. From the Matara Terminal, you can hire a taxi/tuk-tuk and reach Mirissa in less than 15 minutes.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮

The sandy beach, with its golden sand and indisputably pleasant ambiance, cool breezes, and the right balance of hot and cold, is a tourism destination that many countries lust after.

The ‘Princess of Lanka,' a Sri Lankan Navy Passenger Craft, was launched in 2011 and has since become a vessel for individuals who want to experience a meaningful sport such as Whale Watching.

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮
A little, pristine, quiet beach that is a little more difficult to find. As a result, the beach is known as Secret Beach. Only one little bar and a local lady selling coconuts are present. From Secret Beach, take enjoy a breathtaking sunset.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸
A rock towers over the water in front of Mirissa Beach, where you can climb to get a view of the Mirissa area. You won't be able to access the rock during high tide, and even at low tide, it's a bit of a challenge.

𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁
A little coconut orchard on a mountaintop is 15 minutes from Mirissa Beach. The sunset vista or sunrise view from this location is just breathtaking.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲

Ella in Sri Lanka is a small laid-back town surrounded by the beautiful greens of tea. There are a lot of things to do in Ella. Take one of the most beautiful train rides from Nuwara Eliya to Ella and fall in love with the surroundings. You will probably end up staying longer than you actually planned to.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐓𝐨 𝐃𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚

𝐇𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐦’𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐤
Little Adam’s peak is the nephew of Adam’s Peak. From the top enjoy the view over the valley, relax and connect with other travelers. From Ella Town to the foot of the mountain takes 45 minutes, and to get to the top around 15 minutes

𝐅𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐙𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞
One of the newest attractions in Ella is the Flying Ravana Zipline. It’s over 500m long and travels at over 80km per hour. It’s one activity that’s sure to get your heart racing!

𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚
This now world-famous bridge is located just outside of Ella Town and in the same way as Little Adam’s Peak. With a small 30 minute walk through the woods, you will reach a piece of beautiful architecture hidden between lush green tea fields

𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬
The first waterfall we’ll mention on this list of things to do in Ella is Ravana Falls. This huge waterfall is really quite impressive to see. Ravana Falls is also one of the closest waterfalls to Ella, this makes it very easy

Lipton’s Seat in Haputale is a great morning or afternoon trip from Ella. In the morning, take a short train ride to Haputale

𝐃𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬
If you’re going to visit one waterfall in Sri Lanka then Diyaluma Falls is a great choice. It’s Sri Lanka’s second-largest waterfall and an epic place to explore

Although the trail has similar views to Little Adam’s Peak, it does take you much higher up for a more panoramic view. The trail to the top and back takes around 4 hours from Ella and is 8km long

Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka, bordering the Indian Ocean.Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and, along with Wilpattu was one of the first two national parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938. The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. It is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan leopards and aquatic birds.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵

𝗕𝘆 𝗔𝗶𝗿:
From Colombo Airport, the fastest way to reach Yala National Park is to take a flight to Hambantota, which takes about 45 minutes, and from Hambantota, you can travel by road to Yala.

𝗕𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻:
It takes approx. 9 hours by train from Colombo to Yala National Park, and it’s wise to board the train from Colombo Fort Station with the end destination being Haputale, which is 1 ½ hour’s drive to Yala National Park.

𝗕𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱:
Approximately 300 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport, Yala National Park by road is best explored through the Southern Highway in a rented car, which happens to be the most convenient in comparison to the arduous and exhausting train and bus journeys!

𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗮𝗹𝗮:
It is best to explore Yala in a Jeep with a driver, and for your trips in the countryside if you like cycling, then hiring a bicycle would be adventurous.

Gregory Lake was build under the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. This is the most prominent attraction in Nuwara Eliya and all the visitors used to come here and spent some time by the lake and relax.

Activities in Lake Gregory

Boat Ride: It is one of the main activities to do in Lake Gregory. Tourists can take a speed-boat ride for around 20 minutes on this lake. It is a beautiful lake and one can enjoy the beauty of the place from the boat. The sights are just unbeatable and the weather of Lake Gregory will leave you mesmerized with its cool winds. One can also choose for a swan-shaped paddle boat. It will cost you around 500 rupees for 30 minutes.

Horse Ride: There is also an option of pony ride or horse ride for the travelers.
Lake Gregory in Nuwara Eliya is the perfect spot for an exciting horse ride. Trotting around the lake on a pony will cost you around 300 rupees for 15 minutes.

Cycling: One can also hire a bicycle and go around the park cycling. One will definitely enjoy cycling around the park with cool winds blowing.

How to reach Lake Gregory: Once you have reached the city, you may also carry a Lake Gregory map that will help you locate the place easily; or choose to take the below modes of transportation.

Garadi Ella Waterfall - Kalugala Sri Lanka

Kalugala Gerandi Ella is a cluster of waterfalls falling down the Gerandigala mountain, which is situated in Kalugala area of Ududumbara, Kandy district. you will find this beautiful waterfall on the left side, lying far away towards Kalugala. This cluster has seven segments and when put together, the total height is around 200 to 240 meters.
