John Mulholland Resume and Bio
John Mulholland has been building and repairing musical instruments in the string and percussion family since 1992. Stemming from a love of music, art, craftsmanship, and functionality, he set out on a Bahaus inspired approach to learning as many different skills and techniques that could be applied to Lutherie. This included studying fine metalworking, woodworking
, and design at Penland School of Craft under Michael Puryear, Kate Wagle, and Wendell Castle; jewelry design and fabrication at Sawtooth Center under Andrea Kennington and Carol Morse; fine art, sculpture, design, and painting at WCC under Tamara Grayson as well as many trade and apprentice based experiences. Specializing in electric and acoustic guitars of the solid, flattop, and archtop variety, John also works on and designs unique instruments. He has repaired and set up Middle Eastern, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, and folk instruments from all traditions. Museum quality restorations with an emphasis on playability are his specialty. Prices vary based on the nature of the work being performed as well as any fluctuations in material prices. John can also help guide you in building or modifying that instrument of your dreams, making a custom or reproduction pickup, or even teach you about the finer points of Lutherie through one on one or group classes.
