Last night, we scored this Flammulated Owl after watching the sunset and listening to Townsend's Solitaires sing as night fell.
This adorable owl is an early front runner for the bird of the trip!

Montana has mammals too!
Another fun aspect of spending time in Montana is the mammals you're able to see!
During my recent 7-day private tour, we tallied 16 species!
This wasn't a mammal-focused tour, so we didn't try for photos of each, but here are all the shots I got over the week.

Red Fox
Coyote
Black Bear
Grizzly Bear
Bison
Moose
Elk
Mule Deer
White-tailed Deer
Bighorn Sheep
Yellow-bellied Marmot
Columbian Ground-Squirrel
Richardson’s Ground-Squirrel
Black-tailed Prairie Dog
Red-tailed Chipmunk
Red Squirrel
Eastern Fox Squirrel

I also picked up 2 species while scouting that we didn't get on tour:
Snowshoe Hare
American Pika

That's a wrap!
Our 7-day private tour of Montana ended with 162 species!
51 of which were new (lifers) species for my client.

Starting and ending in the prairies, with a few days in the mountains in between, we saw a wide array of species and landscapes. In fact, the "diverse habitats and landscapes" were the number one highlight for my client!

Such a good way to sum up what a summer road trip in Montana is all about!

Here's a collection of some of our highlights from the tour.

GBA had fantastic day guiding for some repeat clients!
We focused on the high-elevation forests, in places very few other visitors go.
We scored Boreal Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak, and Canada Jay among more common birds like Townsend's, Wilson's, and MacGillivray's Warblers, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Fox Sparrow.

We actually snagged a "4 Chickadee Day" with Boreal, Mountain, Black-capped, and Chestnut-backed Chickadee!

Of course, it wasn't all birds! We did good with mammals as well!
Elk, Moose, Snowshoe Hare, and American Pika are 4 of the 8 mammals we saw during our full-day tour.

June dates are filling up!

This is your reminder to reach out if you are interested in a private and individually crafted birding trip to Montana's "Glacier Country"!

That includes the vast and beautiful shortgrass prairies that this Chestnut-collared Longspur, and many other specialty species, call home.

Another great tour with a focus on winter owls!
My client and I found a roosting Northern Saw-whet Owl while searching for Long-eared Owls, and spent the evening watching over a dozen Short-eared Owls!

A few Short-eared Owls were even displaying to each other with their remarkable mid-air "wing clap" where they bring their wings forward and clap rapidly as they dive through the sky!

Displaying owls, singing Western Meadowlarks, and flocks of migratory waterfowl all signal that spring is nearly here!

T’is the season for owls!
We just wrapped up a successful 2 day tour with a focus on owls! 5 species in total (the Short-eared Owl didn’t cooperate for photos)

A number of other great birds along the way include Evening Grosbeaks, Trumpeter Swans, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Prairie Falcon, and Pygmy Nuthatches.
