SV Paradigm Shift is in the water.

Still knocking out a few things before we bring her south though.

After she splashed we topped up diesel, did some provisioning and then changed the oil and filters on both engines and the generator. 💪

There wasn’t actually any system in place to raise or lower our rudder and at several hundred pounds it isn’t something you can just manhandle into place.

While we had everything apart I welded a stainless pad eye under the aft footwell and drilled a hole for a shackle on the transom stringer. I also welded a pad eye on top of the rudder post.

With the anchor and pivot points in place we set up our small chainfall and made up a custom dyneema haul line to haul the rudder up.

Finally we added some haul lines to the sides for stability. ......

We have a second cockpit aft that isn’t used anymore. The footwell drains were welded pipe that were past due to be replaced.

Quick work to cut them out.

We made new drains from Stainless and welded them into place. The new through hulls will get stainless valves and they will connect to the footwell via reinforced hose. ......

Well..

That happened.

OUPV 6Pac - Check!!

For those that don’t know this is a “Merchant Mariner Credential”.

In the US the USCG issues their various “Captains Licenses” and other endorsements and identifies them on this document.

Mine is for OUPV / 6-pack - Near Coastal out to 100 miles.

Licenses are required in order to legally carry passengers for hire. This includes charters for fishing, sightseeing, diving, transportation, or teaching. Many companies require them for boat deliveries.

OUPV License

This license is properly termed “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) and is commonly referred to as the “6-pack” or “Charterboat Captain’s License”. The word “uninspected” means that the equipment required and the design of the boat are less regulated. “6-pack” refers to the 6 passenger limitation placed on the license.

OUPV licenses are also issued with a particular route. Your license can be for the Great Lakes, Inland routes meaning bays, sounds, rivers, lakes, etc. of the US or Near Coastal routes out to 100 miles offshore.

All OUPV licenses are for 100 Gross Tons vessels (about 100 feet, more or less).

In the next few years I’ll be looking to get into sailboat deliveries as a way to supplement income. It starts here.

This one was totally not needed. It’s not a repair, it’s not maintenance or under built. it was fine.

This is the footwell of the aft steering station (that no longer exists) and it sticks out into the aft cabin interior.

We have been dreaming about reclaiming that space for years and now is the time.

Buh Bye!!

Moving aft again we get to the rudder tube.

This was a known maintenance area. The rudder packing hasn’t been working properly for years. Between salt water and old age the coatings have failed and corrosion has progressed.

There was no direct failures but it definitely needs tending to.

We could have just cleaned it up and repainted but will never be this easy to do it right again.

Soooo…

Cut out any plate or frames that seem compromised and rebuild.

We went from 3/16” to 1/4” material in this area to add strength and give us a bit more corrosion allowance for the future. We were also careful to do it one frame and tube support at a time. We didn’t want to lose the alignment of the rudder..

We have been busy.

The past few weeks we have gone from an empty, fully gutted cabin to a mostly framed out sub structure.

We have the “bones” of the aft head and the main berth to port. Starboard we have storage framework for cabinets, dresser and hanging locker.

We haven’t posted any pictures because it is almost impossible to tell what you are looking at in pictures. 😂......

Time to prime all the welds from work done earlier in the bilge and add a second coat in the stern tube area.

It’s going to get harder and harder to paint the bilge as we start rebuilding the floor frames. ........

Last frame.

Laura primes the inside while we have access to it then we close it up.

As usual the inside weld is with MiG to make it easy. Then it is back gouged and welded from the outside with 7018 stick.
Anything that can’t be welded from both sides has a backing plate…

Then we grind down the outside welds so that the hull can be faired out more easily.
