Veganism is extreme. Extremely peaceful toward animals. Choosing a vegan lifestyle means opting for extreme compassion - deciding to cause as little harm as possible with our dietary choices.

Sure, some may see this level of kindness as unrealistic or unnecessary. But every small act of mercy matters. The vegan movement may seem radical to some, but is it radical to have extreme reverence for living beings?

Rather than viewing veganism as severe or excessive in its aims, we might see it as enlightened activism, born from profound caring. If nurturing non-violence and cultivating universal goodwill is so outside the mainstream - maybe it's the mainstream mindset that needs questioning, not the vegans.

What's your perspective - is it possible to have too much empathy? How could we make "extreme compassion" more socially accepted?

As we get too bogged down in taking action we forget to envision the compassionate future we're striving for?

As a vegan, people have called me all kinds of names, crazy being one of them.

Yet, no one has ever called me cruel. So in their eyes I am a "compassionate fool". I can live with that!

Becoming vegan opened my eyes to the immense suffering we inflict on animals raised for food.

While adopting a compassionate, plant-based lifestyle has brought me inner peace, not everyone understands.

My conscience is clear even as I'm judged a “compassionate fool.”

Now I have only empathy and patience for those still sleepwalking as I once did.

My eyes are open and I could never go back to that numb state, no matter the social discomfort.

When people connect with and care for farm animals that have been rescued from cruelty, it can be a transformative experience.

Bearing witness to the animals' resilience, unique personalities and emotional capacities firsthand tends to dissolve stereotypes we hold of them as dim-witted commodities.

As our eyes and hearts open, sanctuaries cultivate seeds of empathy and respect.

If more people volunteered at or visited vegan farm animal sanctuaries, perhaps some collective compassion and wisdom would take root. Humanity might transform itself to live in greater harmony with other living beings who share our earth. If only we pause to listen and understand.
