How does one illuminate a two-story glass conservatory for night-time entertaining? And at the same time, create a chandelier in the High Country style that brings nature indoors? We called the only person up to the task: Matt Bier (846) 643-8444. ([email protected]) His combination of mountain laurel branches, dried pods, honeysuckle, globe lights, stargazer lights, euchalyptus, dried banksia flowers, metallic gingko, Monterey pine, dried yarrow, gypsophila and protea gave us what we had hope for. Secondly, we needed an equally capable professional who could manage electrical issues with confidence: Joel Scarpati at Power Shield (203) 285-7850. ([email protected]).
Together they have given us conservatory lighting with a flair that will brighten our evening hours for years to come.

Planning a wedding in Tuscany? We couldn't imagine a more ideal setting than the Castellina in Chianti. Set in the wine-famous Chianti Hills between Florence and Siena, the complex offers accommodations, a 16th century San Salvatore church, dining facilities, wine cellar, gardens, all in the same compound. The sights include an imposing 14th-century Rocca (Fortress), offering spectacular views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Last Saturday we attended a wedding like no other. The setting was the Church of San Michele at the Passignano Abbey in San Casciano, a medieval village perched on the hills in the Chianti area, 15 km southwest of Florence. Maddie and Matteo Pozzi, who we’ve come to love as the daughter and son we never had, recited their vows in Italian. The mass and nuptials were officiated by Benedictine monks. It was a day we'll never forget. The couple are celebrating their honeymoon in Japan.

It's firewood season. So here are a few firewood facts: ⁣Unlike most fuels, firewood can be stored indefinitely. If it gets wet, it starts to rot so store it in a protected area.

Stacking: Place the newer wood on the bottom of the pile. Older (aged) wood should be on top so it gets used first.

The best burning wood is seasoned hardwood, led by ash, followed by black locust, beech, birch, oak and sugar maple.

Our firewood comes from Phil at huckleberrycinders.com (203) 231-2560.

"Fall colors are funny. They're so bright and intense and beautiful. It's like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary." — Siobhan Vivian

Compact white bacopa, lilac calibrachoa and yellow sun petchoa hang from a flower box on our cottage, resembling an impressionist's depiction. But, in this composition, the rendering is by a prolific photographer. Photo:

A rose garden should be much more than mere roses. Here, a mix of companion plants - foxglove, lupin, baptisia, nepeta and boxwood - add color, texture, harmony and interest to the rose garden framed by privet hedges. Climbing 'White Dawn' roses ramble up and across a wooden grid on the barn in our rose garden. In addition to roses, the garden features an assortment of annuals, perennials and boxwood. Among them foxglove, lupin, peony, lily and hydrangea. These companion plants provide added color, texture, structure and harmony to the garden. They also hide ugly rose ankles. Photo captured by: .

Our rose garden had a special visit from one of the country's leading landscape photographers . This is one of our favorite shots, the yellow/amber section of the rose garden against the gray barn. In addition to the roses, it's alive with rose companions: lupin, foxglove and peony.Photo credit:

2024 has been a remarkable year for hydrangeas in Connecticut, due to a very mild winter and very wet spring. Our favorite is 'Venice' from Proven Winners. A dwarf hybrid developed in Germany, it grows no taller than 4 1/2 feet. That means no flopping and no need for cutting back. It produces blooms that last 3-4 months. Yes, as its lineage implies, a proven winner.

The idea of adding companion plants came to us from Stephen Scanniello's 2004 book Rose Companions. In it, he explains not how to grow roses, but how to create a garden with roses. Here, we have foxglove, lupin, lily, hydrangea and baptisia as companion plants surrounding the roses, adding dimension, texture, and color to make the garden sing.
