PRINCIPLES FOR STORYTELLING ON TRAILS
Trails provide a unique platform for storytelling, providing an immersive experience of connecting with nature from the perspective of First Nations people. Trails have connected First Nations people across Australia for traditional practices, through seasonal changes and the following of Ancestral stories and songlines for generations.
Appropriate First Nations-led storytelling and knowledge sharing on trails can enable truth-telling, continued connection to Country and culture, cultural acknowledgement and a pathway to healing and reconciliation.

And that’s a wrap on tour guide training in Gungardie (Cooktown) with Gamaay Warra Traditional Owners. One of our favourite stories was how the Wahalumbaal birri (Endeavour River) was created by the Mungurru (amethystine python) as he travelled down the river valley to the Walmba muulaarr (Great Barrier Reef) to bathe in the ocean… next time you are in Cooktown, make sure you hear these stories for yourself with Freddie, Robert, Becky and Cynthia.. ask around for the Gamaay tour guides.
