Step Inside Siena’s Most Famous Square: Piazza del Campo

This piazza is famous for hosting the Palio di Siena—check out my previous post to learn more about this historic horse race!

Other key features of this piazza include:
• Palazzo Pubblico: the gothic town hall
• Torre del Mangia: a tall tower with excellent views
• Fonte Gaia: a beautiful fountain, originally completed in 1419 by Jacopo della Quercia
• Surrounding buildings: including residential homes and various palaces that were once the homes of Siena’s noble families.

The piazza’s unique design and cultural significance make it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular destination for tourists and historians alike.

🐷 Il Porcellino (“The Little Pig”) is not a pig! It’s actually a wild boar, and it was originally sculpted by Pietro Tacca in the 17th century.

🐗 The current bronze statue is a replica, with the original housed in the Museo Bardini.

💼 Il Porcellino is located in the Mercato Nuovo (New Market), also known as the Straw Market, in the historic center of Florence.

🪙 THE LORE: According to local tradition, placing a coin in the boar’s mouth and letting it fall into the grate below will bring good luck. If the coin falls through the grate, it is said that you will return to Florence one day.

✨Additionally, rubbing the boar’s snout is believed to ensure good fortune, which is why the snout is polished and shiny from the touch of countless visitors.

🇮🇹 The Ponte Vecchio, meaning “Old Bridge,” is one of Florence’s most iconic landmarks and one of the most famous bridges in the world.

🧱 The bridge seen today was built in 1345 after the previous structure, constructed in Roman times, was destroyed by a flood.

🛍️ Unlike typical bridges, The Pointe Vecchio is lined with shops, a tradition that dates back centuries.

🐟 Initially, the shops on the bridge were occupied by butchers, tanners, and fishmongers.

💎 However, due to the stench and waste they produced, Duke Ferdinand I decreed in 1593 that only goldsmiths and jewelers could set up shop on the bridge.

💍 This tradition continues today, and the Ponte Vecchio is renowned for its luxurious jewelry stores.

The Ponte Vecchio is more than just a bridge; it’s a living piece of history and a vibrant part of Florence’s cultural and economic life.
