FREE FAMILY WALKING TOURS !

- Thurs 21, Fri 22 & Sat November 23 18.15 to 19.30
- Fri 6 & Sat 7 Decembwr 18.30 to 19.45

I'm delighted to be able to announce a pilot project in conjunction with Night-Time Economy initiative.

It's an evening walking tour & conversation for families about how we mark Cork’s cultural history.

Starting with the two sculptures of Tomás Mac Curtain and Terence MacSwiney outside Cork City Hall and finishing on Kyle Street - where there are two modern murals of the same men - we discuss how a city commemorates history; from what kind of material (statues, murals, banners & books) to who makes it (from highly trained artists to students to children) and why?

Along the way we will look at public art such as the street art (and guerrilla gardening group) Mad About Cork; Island City - Cork's Urban Sculpture Trail and Ardú (Cork's Contemporary Street Art Project.)

We will discuss what is being a citizen of ?

What do we celebrate, why and how do we do it?

History and interesting details such as where libraries were (and who started them); where operas were performed; where films were shown and where parades go.

It is a stimulating walk for all, and an introduction to city for some younger minds who might know individual places but not the streets connecting it.

"a warmth and ease that feels like you’ve bumped into a knowledgable friend on the street who happens to be walking the same direction as you." - Echo Live

Each free ticket covers a family group of 4, with a recommended minimum age of 7.

(This will be an outdoor walking tour at a moderate pace, please wear appropriate shoes and clothing)

Thanks to Cork City Council and The Night-Time Economy initiative for it's support.

A walking tour of Cork, specifically looking at the treats and games that young people (7ish to 13ish year olds ) enjoyed.

22/04/2024

So I did something new on Friday, a natural 'experiment' continuation of my walking tours for children. This time I did an entire class for a school tour. It was a brilliant eye-opener for them and me, so many of them had never looked around like that before. I don't remember doing it myself until I was 14ish myself, and this was a 6th class group.

One of the underlining themes I try to get across with the young people on my tour is that 'history happens forwards' and 'we aren't the last bit of Cork's history really landed' with some of them I think.

It was also invigorating to be around people who have a bigger age difference from them to me (30ish years), than from me to my presumably retirement phase of life (25ish years time, I'll be 70). You need your weetabix and coffee to deal with their energy!

TLDR: This Is Cork Tours does walking tours as school tours now, and it's very good!

I'm starting the This Is Cork podcast from scratch, and the first episode is online now.

It's between me, Frank O’Connor, one half of Derelict Ireland, and Michael O’Sullivan, the instigator of a Meanwhile Use survey, which is running until end of April, the survey is here -> https://bit.ly/MeanwhileUse

We discuss how stopping vacancy stops dereliction, upcoming elections and policies and cover a lot of ground in between.

You can definitely find it here -> https://feeds.acast.com/public/shows/661d4a86a66b730016d1a2f5 and it's up on Spotify too, it might take a while to get on all the directories.

There's also a bonus at the end, an exclusive listen to 'Aisling Gheal', the opening track of David Murphy's incredible album which gets released this Thursday.
