- Thurs 21, Fri 22 & Sat November 23 18.15 to 19.30
- Fri 6 & Sat 7 Decembwr 18.30 to 19.45
I'm delighted to be able to announce a pilot project in conjunction with Night-Time Economy initiative.
It's an evening walking tour & conversation for families about how we mark Cork’s cultural history.
Starting with the two sculptures of Tomás Mac Curtain and Terence MacSwiney outside Cork City Hall and finishing on Kyle Street - where there are two modern murals of the same men - we discuss how a city commemorates history; from what kind of material (statues, murals, banners & books) to who makes it (from highly trained artists to students to children) and why?
Along the way we will look at public art such as the street art (and guerrilla gardening group) Mad About Cork; Island City - Cork's Urban Sculpture Trail and Ardú (Cork's Contemporary Street Art Project.)
We will discuss what is being a citizen of ?
What do we celebrate, why and how do we do it?
History and interesting details such as where libraries were (and who started them); where operas were performed; where films were shown and where parades go.
It is a stimulating walk for all, and an introduction to city for some younger minds who might know individual places but not the streets connecting it.
"a warmth and ease that feels like you’ve bumped into a knowledgable friend on the street who happens to be walking the same direction as you." - Echo Live
Each free ticket covers a family group of 4, with a recommended minimum age of 7.
(This will be an outdoor walking tour at a moderate pace, please wear appropriate shoes and clothing)
Thanks to Cork City Council and The Night-Time Economy initiative for it's support.
