Association Raises concerns over a Sand Mining Project in Madang
-----
Dateline: Madang, 18th of Sept 2020
-----
The Members from the Madang Tourism Industry Association (MTIA) recently voiced their concerns over the environmental effects of a Sand Mining Company.

The Niugini Sands Ltd had recently proposed to do their venture in the Sumgilbar within the Sumkar district of Madang.

MTIA’s Chairman, Sir Peter Barter said that the detrimental effects from the mining would cause some major environmental effects.

“These types of projects, especially to do with our marine ecosystem will affect the Leatherback Turtle Sactuary in the Sumgilbar LLG.”

The Chairman of Mas Kagin Tapani Association (MAKATA), Wenceslaus Magun (Wence) said that he was saddened by the news of the mining project.

“I am heartbroken to inform you all that the leatherbacks conservation sites from Murunas plantations all the way to Murukanam will now be affected by a sand company with foreign investors interest.”

The company, known as Niugini Sands Ltd was incorporated by IPA on the 11th of January earlier this year.

Through a report presented by MAKATA, the document states that the company (Niugini Sands) has four directors in Singapore and a secretary (all Singapore based).

“Other than an office in Port Moresby and the IPA document, little can be known about this shady company,” said Wence.

Wence also said that he and the MAKATA team are frustrated that selfish leaders are behind this proposed project.

“The challenge we faced in securing long-term grants to achieve our objectives is now seeing the ugly face of negative development at the whims of corporate greed and selfish community leaders and their cohorts driving their agenda using gaps in our efforts.”

MTIA and the team from MAKATA urge locals in Papua New Guinea and Madang to not take bribes or to assist any company in Sand Mining.

“Caution is advised for citizens and representatives of the people of Madang towards negotiating and/or awareness campaigns for or against sand mining especially given the lack of information about Niugini Sands Ltd, their recent registration with PNG IPA and their association with Singapore as well as Singapore’s history in sand imports.”

Association urges government to take Tourism Seriously
------
Members of the Madang’s Tourism Industry Association (MTIA) had recently voiced their concerns over their government’s lack of concern with the Tourism Industry.

The President of the Madang’s Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Murray said that the government was not interested in tourism in Madang.

“No matter how hard we try to push tourism with our festivals here in Madang, we need to have an active government that is behind us to support us.”

He was speaking recently in MTIA’s meeting at the Madang Resort.

The interim Chairman for MTIA, Sir Peter Barter said that the government and the private sector need to work closely together.

“We have to move ahead and do a plan and then we have to go forward and provide this to the government, if you want the government to do the plan then this won’t happen, the industry needs to work with the government.”

Sir Peter also said that historically the Madang Provincial government and the Madang Tourism and Cultural Burau (MVCB) had never worked together.

“It hasn’t happened in the past and under the same situation, I don’t think the government will do anything. We have to change for the future of tourism in Madang.”

Representing local guesthouses in Madang, Pholas Yongole from Tugutugu Guesthouse in Karkar Island also voiced his concerns regarding the government.

“I approached the provincial government myself with the Karkar Bilum festival and never had a response from the government.”

“With no funding from the government to host a Bilum Festival, I had to go to Pous Pakop, the governor from NCDC,” said Pholas.

The government is really not interested in tourism.”

Sir Peter also said that the private sector is fully represented by MTIA.

“MTIA does represent the private sector, the private sector is the foremost important sector to make tourism happen.”

“Politicians create policies at a national level, provincial governments implement these policies while the private sector provides these services and ultimately makes things happen within the province.”
