Very happy to be back at Deiso! Much work to do this trip but gotta start it with a ride!!! A very warm welcome by Samantha and Davide with beautiful flowers planted everywhere, the place is looking great. Hopefully renovation on the structure can be started soon 😅!

Going to be a while till my next trip. Plans for the first stage of renovation still with the municipality, as they consider a minor technicality with the windows, I think. Seems they are concerned with the external appearance. Once we are through then I can start on builders quotes and construction later in the year or not 😂, on Italy time. Not trying to do much at this stage but keep the building standing a few more hundred years and create some accommodation for renting. At least I made a start on my kitchen, if just to clear the space to organize it better, with the help of Davide 🙏 in February.

Never bored with the view. Rewarded this year, despite the cold, with amazing views of the mountains. This past month was more admin focused. Sorting out accounting and architect matters. Less work in the house except a huge clean out and we took off my kitchen cabinets. I installed a gas heater upstairs in my bedroom, and was taken advantage of by the plumber, it doesn’t really work, and he got paid handsomely. Nothing I can do now but learn from it! Seems plumbers and electricians are the best paid workers in Italy and there is no shortage of them, so I’ll take more time to assess next time lol .. Plans are at council awaiting approval for phase 1 of construction. Stay tuned for more later in the year.

Great to be back at Cascina Deiso. And what a lovely welcome again. Thankyou Davide and Samantha.

Some improvements to my heating since last year are making a huge difference. The wood stove flue has been cleaned thanks Davide and I am now no longer smoking inside and I have a temporary gas heater upstairs, and oh yes and a new boiler so can take hot showers longer than a minute ;)

More to come over the next month as I knuckle down on architect plans to restore a fallen area and the roof! We are also working on how to cultivate the 5 hectares of land, plant some trees etc etc

Progress report: I keep getting asked how I am progressing with the house. Well as planned for and expected it’s going to be slow. I’m in no hurry anyway. First task is to have some engineers come, measure up and propose solutions to some structural issues. Then next year we start construction on some of the major concerns like the rubble in these pictures and the roof.

I will tackle all of the 1000m2+ roofing next year in a big project that ensures, aside from a major climatic event, we don’t have any issues for another 20-50+++ years. In fact I expect this to be the biggest and most costly job on the house. I hope to appoint someone soon to work with me on this based here!

Otherwise we are cleaning up. Davide and Samantha who live here are doing an amazing job on the garden and I potter around removing rubbish. I may organize the kitchen better at some point. The place came “over furnished”I have enough plates and glasses to kit out a restaurant . 😂 And need to seek a heating solution for winter. But I do have a new fridge and soon new beds and a washing machine. The allergies from the horse hair and or ancient mattresses is affecting our allergies some what 😂 😂 !

Great having all the kids here who are enjoying the cycling and fresh air

I keep postponing it but it’s a job that needs to get done. Started today after a ride. “Rubbish clearing” there is still so much. I won’t know just how much till winter and the shrubs are cleared. But still even after over 20 truck loads earlier this year there are still a few more needed.

Ciao Italy! Nothing like fresh home grown produce, love it, 🙏 David and Samantha. Place looking fantastic, garden tidy and colorful. Some big challenges and tasks ahead of me this Summer as I look to try find a builder to fix some structural issues next year, first the quotes tho, a challenge in itself, and quotes for the renovation design work from architects. I don’t expect it to be easy! But I did not sign up for easy!

Garden is starting to look fantasticĂČ! If you need a local gardener in the -Mondovi area Davide is fantastic, reliable and professional!
