Great to be back at Cascina Deiso. And what a lovely welcome again. Thankyou Davide and Samantha.

Some improvements to my heating since last year are making a huge difference. The wood stove flue has been cleaned thanks Davide and I am now no longer smoking inside and I have a temporary gas heater upstairs, and oh yes and a new boiler so can take hot showers longer than a minute ;)

More to come over the next month as I knuckle down on architect plans to restore a fallen area and the roof! We are also working on how to cultivate the 5 hectares of land, plant some trees etc etc

What is so wonderful about setting up a home base in the (almost) center of Europe is that it brings me closer to people that have meant so much to me after 20 years in Asia! What an amazing summer catching up with some of them and I hope for many more to pass by the Langhe in their travels in future. Although it’s not all that comfortable for guests at the moment, the neighbors have some awesome accommodation options I can recommend in the meantime 😊! Oh and it’s BYO car and a bike is handy to have😂! Feeling very grateful and fortunate to call many places home!

Meeting some of the neighbors was a special treat this trip and of course it all centered around the districts specialty: the Dolcetto🍷 and the inspiring work they have all done on their Cascina’s…. Quite an international community on the Langhe rooftop! Some beautiful wine was tasted! Look forward to seeing everyone, and meeting more, again next trip.

Guests in the house! And two of ‘em from the UK. Exploring Deiso and all its treasures. I wonder if I should just leave it the way it is. 😂 might save me a few bucks lol! Had a wonderful time with .m and Ria! A lovely reunion for us girls.

Progress report: I keep getting asked how I am progressing with the house. Well as planned for and expected it’s going to be slow. I’m in no hurry anyway. First task is to have some engineers come, measure up and propose solutions to some structural issues. Then next year we start construction on some of the major concerns like the rubble in these pictures and the roof.

I will tackle all of the 1000m2+ roofing next year in a big project that ensures, aside from a major climatic event, we don’t have any issues for another 20-50+++ years. In fact I expect this to be the biggest and most costly job on the house. I hope to appoint someone soon to work with me on this based here!

Otherwise we are cleaning up. Davide and Samantha who live here are doing an amazing job on the garden and I potter around removing rubbish. I may organize the kitchen better at some point. The place came “over furnished”I have enough plates and glasses to kit out a restaurant . 😂 And need to seek a heating solution for winter. But I do have a new fridge and soon new beds and a washing machine. The allergies from the horse hair and or ancient mattresses is affecting our allergies some what 😂 😂 !

Great having all the kids here who are enjoying the cycling and fresh air … loving it 😍!

I keep postponing it but it’s a job that needs to get done. Started today after a ride. “Rubbish clearing” there is still so much. I won’t know just how much till winter and the shrubs are cleared. But still even after over 20 truck loads earlier this year there are still a few more needed.

Ciao Italy! Nothing like fresh home grown produce, love it, 🙏 David and Samantha. Place looking fantastic, garden tidy and colorful. Some big challenges and tasks ahead of me this Summer as I look to try find a builder to fix some structural issues next year, first the quotes tho, a challenge in itself, and quotes for the renovation design work from architects. I don’t expect it to be easy! But I did not sign up for easy!

Garden is starting to look fantasticò! If you need a local gardener in the -Mondovi area Davide is fantastic, reliable and professional!

A hard to get to space I left to explore post sale. Today with Davide and Nico we cleared it out. Thanks guys!! Some nice stuff coming out of it. The best was loads of wood planks that will be great for making the furniture one day. And a few other cool bits as well. Amazing what people will stash away in the strangest of places. How it all even got there is a mystery.

Today a big session with the architect and a local building team to get the renovation process started and make my apartment in the monastery more livable for the kids this summer and winter. It has taken 6-9 months to find an architect I’m confident of working with, now to find the building team. This must be the 3rd or 4th crew I have had over, let’s see, today felt more progressive than previous attempts. Feels like home though, I love it here and as Spring awakens, with huge amounts of rain, so do the cracks in the foundations and roof but the roses are incredible, not that I’m into flowers. There are more surprises still everyday and I feel like every time I explore this place I find and learn something new.

Back at Cascina Deiso. A warm welcome from the tenants who have put on the wood stove to warm things up! They live in a separate apartment and have done an amazing job setting it up these past few months. Thankful the wood stove works because nothing else does, except the lights 😂 ! Gas all gone and can’t run a single appliance. That means no Fridge or clothes washing till I sort. Dinner out of cans and jars tonight. Feel overwhelmed with the work required over the next few weeks just to get the inside to feel like I’m not living in a tent 😂! All part of the fun and challenge. Got a big ride in tho: most important!

Spring has well and truly arrived in Bastia Mondovi. Already Davide and Samantha (tenants) have had to cut the grass! Thanks 🙏 looks fantastic. Looking forward to my visit next week. Work needs to begin!

Never to old to learn something new. I’m not in Italy or Malaysia but I’m on tour in Australia with the kids and today testing out the trails in Narooma. Thankyou for helping me set up and to Sarah for introducing me to the trails. Super friendly and helpful service. Highly recommend them.

It is going to be a labour of love, (challenging, tense and emotional at times) as I try to restore history. I envision it taking years just to open the doors as an official hospitality venue, just trying to close the sale took almost 12 months. But there is a vision, a plan and I will just continue to let it evolve step by step.

There is story behind my journey, but it is a 10,000 + word document describing in detail the last 12-18 months and it is only going to get longer. Maybe one day I’ll let people read it.

I hope to be able to host guests from all over the world with their bikes, sense of adventure, love for all things Italian and their families.

A few more before and after!

Some before and after shots. Cleanup almost done and settlement delayed. No surprises there, I could write a book about the last nine months (in fact I have written it all down). I have to return home but we are close! Many lesson’s learnt, it’s been challenging but I can’t imagine not having done this! I have been busy with the clean up and many other things. I’ll detail more when I close the sale, although I sometimes wonder if that will actually happen with all the bureaucracy I have to tackle first.
