The Most Famous Lost Cities Around the World✨
1-Baia Underwater City– Italy
Known as the Las Vegas of the Roman Empire, the city has been underwater for over 1700 years. Due to Caesar’s frequent visits, it was also known as Caesar’s City. As a result of a volcanic eruption, the coastline was pulled 400 meters inwards, forming nowadays Naples Beach. After its destruction, Baia was first spotted in 1940. Thanks to maritime archaeologist Dr. Barbara Davidde, the underwater city was fully explored in 2017. Today Baia welcomes its visitors as a diving spot.
2-Ani – Türkiye
Ani, which is 42 kilometers from Kars, has been one of the important trade centers due to being a location on the Silk Road for 3600 years, from 3000 BC to 16th century AD. When Kars became the center during Russian rule between 1878-1918, almost 100,000 people living in Ani abandoned the city. Nowadays the ancient city of Ani is among the most important historical sites in Turkey and thousands visit this place every year.
3-Heracleion Ghost City – Egypt
Being one of the most beautiful port cities in Egypt and known also as Thonis, Heracleion’s history dates back to 2200 years. Due to an earthquake that happened around 1000-1200 years ago in Egypt, the city was buried deep in the Mediterranean Sea. Heracleion was rediscovered in 2000 by French archeologists.
4-Geamăna – Romania
The Romanian village of Geamana was occupied until 1978. That year the villagers are asked to abandon their homes for a mine for extracting minerals from the region. Following that, Europe’s second-largest copper mine was established, which generated 11 tons of waste per year. Over time, the hazardous waste formed a lake and swallowed the village. While the ecosystem of the region started to be destroyed, the area that once Geamana used to be transformed into a red lake.
5-Termessos, Antalya – Türkiye
After an earthquake that destroyed the aqueducts of Termessos, the city was abandoned around 200 BC. This ancient city is located 30-35 kilometers northwest of Antalya, along the Antalya-Korkuteli Road. Termessos is one of the best-preserved ancient cities to this day.
