Playa del Regueral and Playa de Cavet, Cambrils
Continually caressed by the warm, gentle Mediterranean, the soft sandy beaches of this once tiny fishing town are a haven for sun worshippers, yachties and families. Cambrils is popular for the good-times atmosphere created by beach bars, trampolines, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking – all along this meticulously spotless shoreline and beach. The relaxed restaurants are a sanctuary for seafood devotees. Take a romantic midnight swim under the lights of the old fishing port.
Sa Terra Rotja
Spa therapies don’t get as relaxing as those enjoyed on the outdoor terrace of this secluded property at the foot of the Serra Tramuntana mountain range. It’s one of three villas located within the 680-acre Son Bunyola estate. Bring your walking boots - the rugged grounds here make for ample hiking terrain, with trails around the estate itself and joining public routes into the surrounding hills. If you’ve had your fill of dips down at Son Bunyola’s pebble beach, hop on a private boat to Sa Foradada, a rocky spit jutting out of the island, whose namesake restaurant dishes up coastal delicacies to feast on after working up an appetite snorkelling in the transparent waters.
Palma Bellavista
Once a stately manor from the 1920s, built in a Cuban Art Deco style, the couple that now owns this property – a Dutch interior designer and a German architect – gave it a loving refurbishment in 2017. They preserved the old world feel of the original home, with features such as its colonial-style balconies, majestic marble staircase, and colourful, mosaic tiles in the flooring. The island’s capital, Palma, is just a 10-minute drive away - you could even do it at a jog, to wake up after a night of feasting on paella cooked up on-site by a private chef that The Luxury Travel Book will gladly arrange.
Sibenik and the Kornati Islands, Croatia
Croatia, believe it or not, is still actually an option, even though its picture-perfect medieval cities and extraordinary coastline welcomed 20 million visitors in 2018. And one sometimes suspects that all 20 million turn up in August, when those straight-out-of-a-fantasy-novel fortified towns are bursting at the seams. Thank heavens, then, for Obonjan. This wellness retreat from the team behind the Hideout festival, sprawling across a private island of the same name, got off to a shaky start when it launched in 2016. But the kinks have been completely ironed out, and guests are guaranteed a tempting mix of yoga classes, chill-out music and glamping. Spare some time as well for Sibenik, a short speedboat ride away: a major historic city and a lovely labyrinth of chalk-white stone. A day’s sailing around the Kornati Islands – unpopulated idylls given over to vineyards, orchards, and little else – also supplies some much-needed mellow.
Norfolk, United Kingdom
Britain’s festival season peaks in August, with several of summer’s biggest hitters taking over forests, parkland and even beaches (Camp Bestival, Wilderness, Green Man, Creamfields and Boardmasters). But perhaps the most attractive weekender is Houghton – the electronic music event curated by legendary London club Fabric’s resident DJ Craig Richards – which will see a top line-up of DJs, sculptures and dazzling light installations set up around the stunning grounds of Norfolk country house Houghton Hall. Come for the party but stay for one of the UK’s very best summer getaways: sipping on North Sea Coffee Company’s third-wave brews as you stroll Cromer’s charmingly retro pier; spotting grey-seal pups in sand dunes at Horsey and Winterton-on-Sea; hiring out one of the colourful beach huts along Wells-next-the-Sea’s shoreline; and, of course, boating the Broads.
Friday Harbor, Washington
This beautiful hamlet sits in the farthest northwest reaches of Washington, with a marina at Roche Harbor that serves as a jumping off point for cruising around small, uninhabited islands. Friday Harbor was once a major produce provider for the state, but these days, the economy is centered around tourism—sea kayaking and orca-watching are the biggest draws. Year-round ferries from Anacortes (on the mainland) make it easy to visit in every season.
Marfa, Texas
Marfa has become a bucket list trip for anyone who’s tapped into culture. Here, there are 16 galleries—one for every 124 residents of this isolated town—in addition to the Chinati Foundation, which holds hundreds of works by Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Donald Judd, and more. The town received its first full service hotel in 2017, the Hotel Saint George, though budget-conscious and adventurous travelers should look into spending the night in a teepee at El Cosmico. As for dining, try out whichever of these restaurants is open: Marpho, a Vietnamese bánh mì and pho emporium, or Planet Marfa, which serves up a mean plate of nachos.
Sitka, Alaska
Sitka is widely considered the most beautiful town in Alaska—mountains known as the “Sisters” serve as a backdrop, and spruce trees grow almost down to the sea. The harborside town is quaint and compact, with the look of a Wild West enclave, complete with flat-fronted wooden buildings that wouldn’t look out of place in a John Wayne film. The natural beauty and remote location of Sitka makes it a beloved destination for hikers, climbers, hunters, and fishermen; head just a few miles out of town and you’ll feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, in the best possible sense.

Auyuittuq, Nunavut
In Canada’s northernmost territory of Nunavut, Auyuittuq National Park is one of the country’s most remote and dramatic parklands. Although the name of this high Arctic park is Inuktitut for “the land that never melts,” in the summer months, there’s plenty of hiking across the park’s 3,475 square miles, and with snowshoes or skis, it’s possible to explore year-round.
The Akshayuk Pass is a 60-mile-long corridor that follows a glacial valley through jagged mountains and glittering icefields. The route can be hiked or skied depending on the time of year, but outside of nine bare-bones shelters that dot the trail, there is nothing in the way of amenities so only experienced backpackers should tackle this adventure. For something less strenuous, a day trip to Ulu Peak is a beautiful introduction to the landscape.
Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia
Road trippers driving along Nova Scotia’s scenic Cabot Trail highway will find themselves winding through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. But travelers would be remiss not to get out into the park itself, which is threaded by trails that climb forested hills carved with deep river canyons.
The Skyline Trail ends at a rugged headland overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where whales are often spotted cresting through the waves from May to October. It’s not uncommon to see moose on this trail as well, and visitors should make sure to give the territorial Canadian wildlife a wide berth. Part of the magic of this park is exploring the surrounding towns and villages and savoring Nova Scotia’s famous seafood, as well as discovering its local artisans.
Karijini National Park, Western Australia
Karijini National Park is located in the Hamersley range of Western Australia. This place is perfect for traveler and adventure geeks. Here you can explore places including Fortescue Falls, Hancock Gorge, Oxer Lookout, Weano Gorge, Hamersley Gorge, and Mt. Bruce.

Jiuzhaigou National Park
There are several beautiful colored lakes highlighted with spectacular blues and greens. Five Flower Lake features a crisscrossed design offallen trees. The lakes become even more aesthetically pleasing in the fall when the leaves turn orange, red, and yellow creating beautiful reflections in the water.
The Jiuzhaigou Waterfall is beautiful and is part of the reason for the park's name. There are other waterfalls, however, Jiuzhaigou is probably the pinnacle falls.
Although the population is only around 20, a pinnacle highlight is seeing the endangered giant panda in the wild. The snub-nosed monkey is also limited in population and adds to the fun when a sighting occurs.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain National Park
The views from the ascent and summit of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are phenomenal and one of the key highlights of the park. The stunning Tiger Leaping Gorge leaves visitors speechless as they hike along with one of the deepest canyons in the world and gaze up at the magnificent canyon walls.
Those who are not interested in hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge can see much of it by road allowing people to see rockslides, waterfalls, and the overall gorge.
Huangshan National Park
The mountain range of Huangshan is an inspiration to artists, photographers, and poets. The aesthetically beautiful scenery leaves most people standing in awe of the majestic scenes created by the sculpted trees, granite peaks, and rolling clouds.
Buddha’s Light is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon created by the mist from the clouds and their interaction with either the sunlight or moonlight.
The hot springs are said to help with different skin conditions and illnesses, but to most, they offer some of the most scenic hot tubs in the world.
West Coast National Park
Birdwatching is one of the leading activities of the national park and many people find the variety of species to be a highlight. The marine and coastal landscapes are much of the draw for the park as well. Two of the most significant attractions include Saldanha Bay and Langebaan Lagoon.
