A bouquet of wildflowers blooms near a tree line lake at sunrise in Rocky Mountain National Park in early August. In some ways, it is sad to see summer go but I can’t wait for the autumn colors and then for the snow. I guess I just love it all.

Last week, I spent the early part of a morning up on a barren peak in the Lumpy Ridge area of Rocky Mountain National Park. There, old limber pine trees grew amid the rock, somehow finding nutrients in this inhospitable place and growing more beautiful as a result of the struggle.

Some trails may start out dry with no snow, but all trails are snowy in RMNP at some point. Most trails in Rocky Mountain National Park remain covered with snow and the snowpack on trails varies.

If planning to hike on any trails, it is recommended to pack traction devices for the bottom of your boots and hiking poles. Snowshoes are recommended at higher elevations.

Rocky's alpine lakes may be covered in snow and might look like they are fully frozen, but ice is beginning to melt and thin underneath. It is strongly advised to avoid walking on the surface of frozen lakes. Use extra caution near any inlets and outlets where water is flowing beneath the ice, as ice on the surface of the water is thinner at these locations.
