Newlands Family Travelling in Kenya
Merry Christmas to all from Kenya.
The boys are relieved to hear that Santa has arrived in New Zealand and hope he is on his way to Africa.
Nakuru National Park is well know for its rhino.
Staying in a National park is always fun. We usually camp in tents, however this time we stayed at an old KW S wardens house. They boys had great fun interacting with the resident monkeys.
Think Twizel's Christmas tree beat this!
Just had a great 24 hrs in Nakuru National Park.
2 pride of lion
Heaps of rhino
Buffalo, monkeys, baboons Giraffe and Zebra walking right past our veranda.
Plus managed to get stuck!!!! Then saw a pride of lion 500m away once we got out!
Might just be my favourite supermarket name.
Dominic not as easily impressed.
Super proud of these two humans.
Moving to the other side of the world and adapting to life in Africa doesn't seemed to have fazed them.
After 5 weeks at Pembroke House School William has impressed the staff enough to be named as a prefect.
Dominic did extremly well at the School Athletics day. He tied with two other boys to be awared the U13 Boys Victor Ludorum. The boys compete and score points over 4 events. Dom recorded
1st 800m
2nd Long Jump
3rd High Jump
3rd 100m.
Which was amazing considering he was competeting against some boys almost two years older than him.
William also did very well
2nd 800m (Great battle between the brothers)
2nd High Jump
3rd Triple Jump
Quote of the day from the back of a truck ' Never trust a smiling face'.
Maybe because people who smile know how to spell....
After three weeks at school we have an Exeat. Because Pembroke is a full boarding school, there is school on Saturday and many children don't go home at all over the weekend. Therefore every 3 weeks we have an Exeat where everyone Exits the school.
This exeat we were lucky enough to be invited to a friends lodge "House in the Wild" in the Maasai Mara and stay in their Bandas. We were spoilt wrotten for three days.
We managed a couple of game drives, where we saw a huge array of animals. The highlight was a cheetah and her two young cubs. Dominic has waited patiently to see a cheetah and upon seeing the first of the cheetahs, he was so excited we could hardly contain him.
We now have another three weeks of school (that is three full weeks with no weekends off) until half term later in October.
Dommy and I head away tomorrow on a 4 day Camel safari with his class. So we are super excited about that. Although if anyone has been on a camel safari you will know how uncomforatble they are!!!
So the first week of school has come to an end. The boys have settled in extremely well and have made some great friends already. Both are doing very well with their sport. Hopefully they will make the 1st VII cricket team for the first fixture of the term next weekend. Both have done extremely well with athletics, these images are of them coming in 2nd and 3rd in the U13 800m trial. Everyone was intrigued with the sibling battle.
We have just spent a wonderful couple of days with fellow Kiwi on Lolldaiga conservancy. We had the most amazing time. William tells our story of our sundowner being cut short by a visit from a lion. To fill in some blanks for people. A sundowner is when you drive to a spot, usually on a high peak somewhere to have a beer, G&T and watch and sun go down. Thanks Sam and Flick for the amazing time.
We spent 5 wonderful days in Shaba National Reserve. We pratically had the park to ourselves and got to explore some wonderful sundowner spots with awesome friends. Thanks Mike and Katie and Cat and Ivan for the reintroduction to the Kenyan Safari.

Today we explored our local conservancy Soysambu. This small park is only 20 minutes down the road from Pembroke House. Located on the shores of Lake Elementaita, it is home to the famous Pink Flamigos, there were also hundreds of Zebra and some lovely giraffe.

Sorry Twizel!!
Day Two in Dubai. Today we escaped the waterpark and headed into the main Center of Dubai.
First it was to the Top of the World at the Burj Khalifa. William and Dom have been fascinated by the Burj for years. The views were incredible down into the sprawling city. Unfortunately the smog is horrendous so you can’t see very far.
Next it was off to explore the dubai mall. What a ridiculous place that is.
We then walk 2 km indoors above the city through glass walkways and tunnels to the metro station to catch a ride to the Museum of the Future. After a big day on our feet it was back to the Atlantis for a dip in 32oC ocean.
We have survived Day One in Dubai. After just over 5 hours sleep in the past 48 hrs, The boys have done amazing well. We arrived at our hotel at 7am, luckily it has the Worlds Largest water park attached. So the day has been spent exploring the water part and aquarium at the hotel. With only one melt down in the middle of the day as the temp rose 47oC, it was time to retreat to our air conditioned room. We have three days in Dubai before flying to Kenya on Friday morning.
Follow the Newlands family as they travel to Kenya for 8 months. Bevan and Bridget are returning to teach at Pembroke House after 15 years.

We have arrived safely at Pembroke House The boys had their eyes open the whole 2 1/2 hours from Nairobi to Gilgil. We have enjoyed spending time catching up with old friends here at school and at the Local Gilgil Club AGM. No, I wasn’t appointed onto the committee. #kiwisinkenya #livingthedream
