Bear Lake is a Public Trust resource, belonging to the people, to be managed by the States for the benefit of all. Bear Lake Watch is the two-way channel for Bear Lakers and governance, creating a pathway to influence change in law, management and policy.

Bear Lakers are in the best position to watch and create a record of what is happening at and to the lake, and to get boots on the ground when needed. How often does Bear Lake freeze over?
Records started in 1923 of freezes and thaws and it was judged to be “frozen over” when from a high viewpoint (like the Logan Canyon overlook) there was no visible open water on the lake.

Since 1923, freeze-over has occurred 66% of the time, about 2 out of every 3 years.

The recent tendency is less often, only 3 out of the last 10 years achieving complete freeze-over.

The earliest recorded date of freeze is December 26th, and the average date is January 27th. Average date for thaw is April 10th and the latest was May 14th.

But our beautiful blue is back, after this year's freeze, and we speak for all Bear Lakers when we say we missed our lake so much!
