Members of indigenous tribes of Bukidnon make up most of the Kitanglad Guard Volunteers (KGVs). They regard the Kitanglad mountain range as the center of their well-being, with their ancestral customs revolving around it. Biodiversity conservation goes beyond and above their duty, as it is part of their spirituality, culture and history, their life.

The KGVs are among the strongest IP partners for the protection of Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park (MKRNP), also declared an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2009. Every day, they’re faced with an enormous task of protecting our natural heritage. Let’s strengthen our support for these environmental defenders.

SHARE to CARE 💚

In the past, it had been a common practice among non-IPs who climbed the peaks of MKRNP to take pictures of the park. Only a few entered the ancestral domain with utmost reverence toward it, perhaps because most of the others were ignorant of the sacred commandments, even dismissing these as fairy tales and folk beliefs that must be discarded. Thanks to the cultural experts, their ways of life have demonstrated and served as a reminder of the sacredness of their traditions and the resources to people of the "outside world" who have come to adopt Bukidnon as their home and regard the park resources as the IPs do.

Following are the rules for anyone who wish to enter the sacred domains of Mt. Kitanglad, as summarized by the cultural profiling team. Nonetheless, these are normative rules to regulate behavior inside these areas.

1. Be proper in clothing and behavior. Do not wear shorts.
2. Observe silence and avoid unnecessary noise(such as playing music on cellphone, radio or any gadget), boisterous laughter, joking and mocking.
3. Do not urinate or defecate in areas near and sorrounding the bangkasu
(Definition of Term
Bangkasu- altars for ritual)
4. Keep eyes and ears on alert, but never speak or utter a word if you see strange movements as you enter.
5. Do not speak or utter the words asin (salt) and sabon (soap).
6. Do not mention four-legged animals such as carabao, cow and horse.
7. Be modest and uphold purity of heart and mind. Those using 3G or smart phones should never view or watch lewd pictures or movies while inside the sacred zones.
8. Persons who eat dogs are not allowed to enter.
9. Troublemakers are not allowed to enter.
10. Be honest. Do not offer stolen foods or items; no one is permitted to eat stolen foods.
11. Do not desecrate the trees and stones by marking and vandalism.
12. Do not pick/bring anything from the forest.
13. Do not litter and do not leave your trash in the mountains, especially non-biodegradables such as plastic, bottles and cans.
