"Kempf and Raede, along with their team of trusted tour guides, have put careful thought into every aspect of each trip. Choosing simple and predictable accommodations means travelers have a safe place to recharge, for example. “The support is the curation,” says Kempf. WanderRock does six or seven trips per year to Japan—it’s their most popular tour. Kempf believes that’s because Japanese culture makes sense to neurodiverse adults. “There’s a sort of respectful distance in Japanese culture. Nobody is trying to be in your business.”
Because of that, 75% of their travelers are interested in that trip specifically, so they’ve prioritized creating the perfect Japanese itinerary. “We don't stay in the busiest part of Tokyo, for example. We stay in places where the lighting is better. Everything is more conducive to not unnecessarily taking up our travelers’ energy.” Rather than touring a crowded and loud samurai museum, they meet with a father and son of unbroken samurai lineage and learn through hands-on experiences. “We want our guests to spend as little energy existing as possible, so that they have the battery to experience other things that are more complicated and then meaningful.”"
The travel industry is finally starting to accommodate neurodiverse adults with WanderRock, an organized tour group.

Puts More Life Into Your Life
WanderRock is one of a kind — an intentionally non-therapeutic option for neurodiverse young adults who are ready to learn from creating new experiences through adventure travel. Our programs have a multi-phase approach that builds a bridge from the skills our travelers already have, to the skills needed to be a successful & interdependent human.
WanderRock has been created to meet the need of a shorter term, lower cost programming for neurodiverse young adults that could benefit from a transformative travel experience in between high school and college, over college summer breaks and between college and work. We're looking for young adult participants who will benefit from a non-traditional, short-term program that is more akin to The Amazing Race than Wilderness Therapy or Adventure Therapy or Adventure Education. Our program offers intentional opportunities for adventure, self reflection, cultural exploration and community service, with the opportunity for the trip participants to be trained as guides on future trips.
Our trips empower neurodiverse young adults to have endless opportunities for growth, achieve greater degrees of confidence, build new connections within themselves, their fellow travelers and the world around them, and ultimately gain more life experience through adventure & education, so that they may live their most meaningful lives.
Young adults will address and improve issues pertaining to executive functioning, sensory integration and anxiety in a thoughtfully crafted and partially self-guided journey of self-discovery.

Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to follow our main ethos: Putting more life in your life. We believe that travel is one of the best ways to gain real world skills that will last a lifetime. Those skills include...
1. Executive Functioning Skills
Travelers will learn & gain confidence in the practical application logistical skills that they can take into every day life. These skills aren't something that can be taught in a classroom or by reading, so we emphasize practical experience whenever possible.
For example, travelers might have to research dinner options, negotiate with peers, check to see if the restaurant fits within their budget for the week, and plan how to get there on public transportation.
We focus primarily on these areas:
Sequencing and Processing: Gathering information, prioritizing that information and then acting on it
Time & Money: Budgeting, time management and practicing value judgements
Problem Solving: Readjusting expectations, being flexible & being persistent with goals
2. Perspective & Wisdom Building
One of the great things about travel is that by experiencing different cultures, it gives you a new sense of perspective & a greater wisdom as you go about your daily life. Our program uses deep cultural immersion & the physical environment to give our travelers a greater understanding of themselves, their worldview and the people around them.
Building Empathy & Creating Tolerance: Seeing people as people with their own struggles, successes and preferences.
Re-Aligning Personal Stories: Creating new self identities and shifting the personal stories we tell about our efficacy in the world.
Becoming More Flexible: Moving from black and white thinking to grey areas by experiencing different cultural norms & practicing acceptance
3. Self Care & Emotional Regulation
Being out on the road for 6 weeks teaches you a lot about your basic needs, and our program highlights those needs and helps our travelers make good decisions about eating, relaxation, sleep, hydration & more, based on their own felt sense of checking in with themselves.
Emotional Capacity & Vagal Tone: Increasing resilience to stressors and building the capacity to tolerate difference
Deep Relaxation: Practicing meditation, mindfulness, stillness and other aspects of unwinding
Bodily Needs: Checking in with your body to know when to eat, sleep, rest, drink, etc.
4. Social & Community Engagement
Our travelers will have many, many opportunities to connect with their peers and the people of the various communities we visit, which will allow them to practice social skills & community engagement in a safe, welcoming way.
Sharing & Advocating: Travelers will practice advocating for their wants & needs in the group, and sharing ideas, concerns & preferences with others.
Interpersonal Skills: Building leadership, team & communication skills in a wide variety of settings & experiences
Building Motivation: Understanding desires, and learning to rally a group around a common goal
