Why Go: Situated on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater the camp offers spectacular views, not only down to the crater floor, but also north-west as far as the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and even the Gol Mountains. There are six tents, two of these are family units and two bedrooms apiece and all tents benefit from bedside tables and lighting, a comfy seating area with lovely views. The main area comprises of a lounge and dining area within a central mess tent.
Activities from Entamanu feature game drives, guided walks, and interactions with the local Maasai. Game drives focus on the crater, while Entamanu’s guided walks explore the highlands around the rim. The Ngorongoro Crater is simply chock-dull of wildlife. All Big Five animals roam the sprawling plains and acacia woodland of the cater floor. Counts of other predators such as cheetah, serval, caracal, and golden cat are relatively low, but there are huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles, in addition to ample eland, topi, hyena, hartebeest, baboon, and warthog. The crater’s soda lake and its tributaries attract hippos, waterbuck, and many more, while the birdlife really is something to write home about, with over 200 species to spot.

Where Is It: Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Why Go: Phinda is home to six magnificent lodges each with its own individual charm and character and is one of South Africa’s most well-known private reserves. It offers a unique habitat that is a complete contrast to South Africa’s other game viewing areas. Phinda is made up of 17,500 hectares of conservation land bordering the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It has seven different ecosystems within the park and combines grassland, woodland, wetland and forest with mountains, rivers, marshes, and pans. With such varied habitat, it is able to sustain an enormous range of wildlife. Not only is it home to all of the Big Five, but cheetah and black rhino sightings are common. It is also excellent for birdwatching, with more than 380 species of bird.

Each of Phinda’s four main lodges is situated in a different habitat, as is illustrated by the names Forest Lodge, Mountain Lodge, Rock Lodge and Vlei Lodge. There are also two smaller lodges designed for sole use by families and private groups. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy both on and off site-game drives, bush walks, canoeing on the Mzinene River, and white rhino tracking. Scenic flights over the reserve and scuba diving off the coast can be arranged too.
