Daddy Are We There Yet?

Have you ever gone on a long road trip with young kids? If so, you know what I'm talking about. That's what this last year dealing with COVID feels like to us and we're not there yet!! Although, we just passed a billboard that said, Las Vegas 118 miles, so we're on the right path and we'll be there pretty soon. We are anticipating and are hopeful that many parts of the world will gradually reopen for travel starting this Summer, so now's the time to plan. We're optimists.

Originally we planned a week in Switzerland and another week in Tuscany. We were to fly in to Zurich on September 1st, then hop on a train to Lake Lucerne. A few days at Lake Lucerne to acclimate to both the jet lag and the altitude, then onto Wengen. Wengen is a Swiss Alpine village in the Bernese Oberland region. It's known for its timber chalets and belle époque hotels and no vehicles other than bikes. From there we were to visit Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen & hike to Kleine Scheidegg for a spectacular close up view of the Jungfrau, Eiger and the other Bernese Alps peaks. It would have been very strenuous and quite a physical challenge and we were going to prepare by hiking and hitting the gym during the months leading up to the trip. Afterward, we would be able recover with wine and pasta during the Tuscany portion of the trip. Sounds great, huh?

It was not to be. Cristy takes our dog Puck to the local dog park every morning and I go in the evenings. The dog park is usually great fun and we've met many new friends there. Puck gets a good workout playing with his buddies and chasing tennis balls. Once in a while things get out of hand, they're dogs after all and get riled up. That happen one morning several months ago while Cristy was there. A group of them got excited and plowed in her from behind. Cristy was violently tossed to the ground and immediately felt pain in her left hip. We hoped it was a mild bruise and that she would quickly recover....NOT! Her hip calmed down, but then her right knee acted up. She was and is experiencing pain 24/7. Cristy is reluctant to seek medical attention. We're very different that way, possibly because I'm on Medicare? After a while, the pain became so unbearable and her knee so unstable, that she relented and saw Dr. Russo, a well respected, local Orthopedic Doctor. He has a conservative treatment approach and ordered physical therapy. It didn't help, so he ordered a MRI. Cristy received the results last week and it was devastating news. She suffered a Meniscal root tear. Meniscal root tears are devastating tears of the meniscal cartilage in the knee at the point where it connects to bone. In essence, the root is the anchor point of the meniscus. Such tears can lead to significant knee pain, dysfunction, instability and rapid development of osteoarthritis. In other words, she's lucky she can walk 10 feet, much less hike the Alps!!

Plan B. Will a devastating injury stop us, hell no!! Repair surgery is not an option. A total knee replacement may be be in her future? Dr. Russo says you're going on your trip, just modify it to accommodate Cristy's injury. So, last week she received a cortisone shot and was fitted for a major knee brace. The steroid will help with the inflammation, for a while and the brace will stabilize her knee and guard against further injury.

Don't cry for me Argentina, er, Switzerland. We quickly changed our plans and will spend the first week in London instead. COVID is awful, but there is one advantage, no fees to change travel plans, including airline reservations. We have plans to see Romeo and Juliet at the Olde Globe Theater and also a tour of Windsor Castle. Flexibility is the operative word. We'll play it by ear in accordance with Cristy's physical limitations. Fortunately, Cristy's ability to eat and drink doesn't appear to be compromised, so Tuscany is not in jeopardy.

Lastly, we've been trying to come up with a theme(s) for our travel. In Search of Charcuterie is a possibility. Charcuterie is a French term for a branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products, such as bacon, ham, sausage, terrines, galantines, ballotines, pâtés, and confit, primarily from pork. We love it!! Also, In Search of Bathrooms was discussed. I vividly recall several years ago standing with Cristy and our tour guide in Rome overlooking the unbelievably marvelous ruins of the Roman Senate, the birthplace of Democracy. Our guide was brilliant. His narrative brought this ancient site to life. Meanwhile, all I could think about was, Where did Caesar p*e? I'm sure that gentleman of my age are nodding their heads in total understanding. Hint: There are no readily accessible facilities near the Roman Forum. Same thing happened to me in Barcelona while walking the Rambla and in London the first time we were there. A bathroom guide would have come in handy. What do you think? What are some other themes we should consider?

Good luck everyone. We hope that you and yours are and will be well. We pray for the rest of the world, especially India. We never lose sight we are fortunate and blessed. Talk at you soon!!

We had several trips planned & looked forward to sharing our adventures with you, but alas, it was not to be!! Welcome to our new Facebook travel page. Eventually, you will also be able to find us at www.HavePulseWillTravel.com too. We are starting these sites for two purposes. Initially, to share memories from our recent travels. Ultimately, we hope to also document the preparations & memories from our next big adventure...NOMAD TRAVEL. NOMAD TRAVEL is loosely defined as heading out to places unknown & for an unknown period of time. It will take some time to get all of the pieces in place, so we roughly expect to launch the actual journey in about 4 years from now. We are looking forward to hearing from you, our friends (old & new), family & fellow adventurers. Post advice, critiques, your experiences, pictures or meet up with us. And so it begins!!
While we may not be successful at everything we try, while we may fail miserably, at least we will never have to ask ourselves the question, “What if??” When we look back on our life what will we remember?
