This Is How We Do It (TIHWDI) Edition 1
How do we travel “so much”? There are often implied and underlying questions when people ask me this. The granddaddy of all questions though seems to be: doesn’t it cost a fortune?
So, in this edition of This Is How We Do It, I’ll share one idea and explain how that concept works for us.
Ready, set, go! BE OPEN TO TRAVELING ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE.
I'm guessing you don’t want to go to El Paso, Omaha, or Knoxville in September unless you have business or family in the area. But what about Franklin State Park and a bowl of menudo in El Paso or the Old Market and hearty runzas in Omaha or the Sunsphere and green tomatoes in Knoxville? Flights to each of those cities are well under a hundred dollars for round-trip flights from Denver in September.
Still not interested? What in case I told you that it’s under $60 dollars for a trip to Miami during the same month? I’m not surprised, because I see prices like this regularly to southern Florida from Colorado.
Not international enough for you? How about a flight to Calgary for $203? Banff National Park is less than two hours away and some of the most beautiful mountains in the world.
Want somewhere warmer? Cancun at the same time is a whopping $225. Hello, cenotes, fish tacos, and Mayan ruins.
Somewhere further? London for $492, Sao Paolo for $504 (or Rio de Janeiro for $19 more), Oslo for $505, Warsaw for $550, Dublin for $557 and Stockholm for $599.
On average, travelers from the U.S. going to Europe spend $1,200 pet ticket. Gulp. No wonder it seems out of reach.
Each time you do a search for everywhere using your favorite search engine (mine is Skyscanner), you learn more about your airport and the hubs it is connected to.
To recap, start with what the market bears, compare that to your wallet, choose the best option for what your soul needs now, buy your tix, and pack your bags. Travel feeds more travel. Chomp, chomp.
