MMarkham Travel Presents: Europe’s Iconic Lakes!
We’ve already explored the elegance of Lake Como, the wide-open beauty of Lake Garda, and the cosmopolitan shores of Lake Geneva. Today, we’re changing gears and heading north to a lake region with a very different kind of charm: England’s Lake District.

This isn’t the place for flashy yachts or waterfront palaces. The Lake District is all about peaceful scenery, windswept hills, and a quiet, rugged kind of beauty.

Stone cottages, misty mornings, and sheep-dotted pastures. The region is home to sixteen major lakes and countless smaller tarns and streams, all framed by England’s highest peaks and some of the country’s most beloved walking trails.

If you’ve ever read Beatrix Potter or William Wordsworth, you’ve already had a glimpse into the Lake District—they both lived and wrote here, inspired by the landscapes around Windermere, Ullswater, Grasmere, and Derwentwater. Their former homes are open to visitors, and so are countless trails, boat launches, gardens, tea shops, and charming market towns.

Whether you're looking to hike, read, paint, recharge, or just take in the views from a cozy pub, this corner of England delivers. It’s a fantastic option for couples, solo travelers, and families alike—and makes a perfect countryside add-on to any London trip.

Want help planning a Lake District getaway? We know just where to stay and how to get there.

At MMarkham Travel, we’re spending the week exploring some of Europe’s most beautiful and culturally rich lake destinations—and today we’re heading to Lake Geneva, also known as Lac Léman, one of the largest lakes in Western Europe.

Lake Geneva straddles the border between Switzerland and France and offers a unique blend of Alpine beauty, refined architecture, and easygoing lakeside living. The Swiss side is dotted with elegant towns like Lausanne—home to the Olympic Museum—and Montreux, famous for its Jazz Festival and scenic promenade. The backdrop here is pure drama: snowcapped peaks, terraced vineyards, and Belle Époque architecture that feels like a step back in time.

Take a ride on a historic steamer boat, explore Chillon Castle (perched right on the lake), or hop on a train for a panoramic ride through the Lavaux wine region—where steep hillside vineyards meet some of Switzerland’s best views. And yes, you can swim in the lake—the water is startlingly clear and famously clean.

Across the lake in France, don’t miss the storybook town of Yvoire, with its cobbled lanes and lakeside cafés. It’s the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the lavender, and linger over a glass of rosé as the sun sets behind the Alps.

Lake Geneva isn’t just a destination—it’s a lifestyle. Elegant, peaceful, and full of cultural depth, it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Follow along as we continue our series on Europe’s most stunning lake destinations. Where should we go next?

Our Lakes of Europe Series: Today, Lake Garda, Italy!

Lake Garda doesn’t always get as much attention as Lake Como—but for many travelers, it’s the better choice. (And it's my personal favorite!)

It’s the largest lake in Italy, and the variety of landscapes, towns, and activities along its shores makes it incredibly versatile. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with kids, or as part of a multigenerational group, there’s something here for everyone.

In the north, the lake is framed by dramatic alpine scenery and attracts hikers, cyclists, and windsurfers. Towns like Riva del Garda and Torbole are great bases for active travelers. The southern end, by contrast, is more Mediterranean in feel—gentler, warmer, and perfect for relaxed strolls, lakeside dining, and wine tasting in the surrounding hills.

You’ll find storybook towns all around the lake:

Sirmione, with its thermal springs, Roman ruins, and the striking Scaliger Castle.

Malcesine, where a cable car takes you to the top of Monte Baldo for panoramic hikes or just incredible views.

Limone sul Garda, known for its lemon groves and postcard-worthy setting.

Bardolino, a wine lover’s paradise, especially during harvest season.

The lake is easy to explore by ferry, which makes it fun to hop between towns without needing to drive every day. And thanks to the region’s rich culinary and wine traditions, there’s no shortage of great meals—fresh fish from the lake, pasta with local truffles, regional wines like Lugana and Bardolino, and limoncello made from Garda lemons.

If you're thinking about a trip to northern Italy but want to skip the heavy tourist crowds of some better-known spots, Lake Garda is absolutely worth a look.

We can help you choose the best towns to stay in, plan out the logistics, and build in time for everything from hiking to spa days. Andiamo!

There’s something timeless about a beautiful lake.

For centuries, travelers, artists, poets, and royalty have been drawn to Europe’s lakes for the same reasons we are today: the peaceful water, the dramatic mountain scenery, the charming towns, and the feeling that time slows down just a little.

This week, we’re sharing a few of our favorite lake destinations across Europe—places where you can unplug, unwind, and enjoy a different side of the continent. Whether you’re into food and wine, hiking and history, or just soaking in the views, these lake regions offer something truly special. First up: Italy’s most iconic lake! Lake Como.

Lake Como is known for its breathtaking beauty, but it’s the charming towns and villages surrounding the lake that truly make it one of Italy’s most enchanting destinations. The lake, with its clear waters reflecting the dramatic Alps, is the star, but the real magic lies in the towns that line its shores.

Take Bellagio, often called the 'Pearl of the Lake'. Its narrow, cobblestone streets lead to stunning villas and gardens that overlook the water. Wander through its lovely shops, enjoy a coffee with a view, or take a boat ride across the lake for the perfect photo op. Then there’s Varenna, a quieter village with colorful buildings lining the waterfront, and Menaggio, known for its lakeside promenade and nearby hiking trails.

But don’t just focus on the towns! The area is steeped in history, and Villa del Balbianello, one of the most iconic villas on the lake, offers a chance to explore its lush gardens and breathtaking views (it was even used in a James Bond film, and a Star Wars movie too!). For art lovers, the Museo Gianni Bellini and Villa Carlotta are a must-see, offering a glimpse into Italian art and culture.

Lake Como is also a hub for outdoor activities. If you love adventure, try hiking the 'Sentiero del Viandante', a historic trail that winds its way along the lake, or enjoy a bike ride through the nearby countryside. And for those who prefer a more relaxed pace, you can always hop on a ferry to explore more of the lakeside villages or simply savor a meal at a lakeside restaurant.

Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Lake Como offers it all. And at MMarkham Travel, we’ll guide you to the best hotels, experiences, and local gems so you can fully soak up all the beauty this stunning area has to offer.

Thoughtfully planned. Beautifully experienced. That’s our commitment at MMarkham Travel.

That amazing restaurant you saw on Instagram? It’s probably already booked solid.

Social media has completely changed the game—one viral reel or glowing influencer review, and a once-local favorite can turn into one of the hardest tables to get in town.

In many destinations—especially across Europe—the best restaurants fill up weeks (sometimes months) in advance. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific place, waiting until you arrive almost always means missing out.

At MMarkham Travel, we don’t make dining reservations directly, but we do make the process easy!

When we’ve booked your hotel, we connect you with the concierge team in advance so you can request reservations directly through them. They’re local, they’re well-connected, and they often have better access than you’ll find on OpenTable or by calling from the U.S.

If you’re not sure where to eat, curated recommendations help! Your concierge team can offer expert advice on everything from buzzy new openings to cozy neighborhood spots. We can include suggestions near your hotel, by the theater, or around your sightseeing plans, so you’re never scrambling for options.

Great meals are part of a great trip. We'll make sure you don’t miss out!

Travel Myths—Busted: Greece Edition!
At MMarkham Travel, we love helping travelers experience the real Greece—not just the picture-perfect postcards. But like many popular destinations, Greece comes with its fair share of myths. Let’s clear a few of them up.

Myth: Greece is just beaches and ruins.
Truth: Sure, the beaches are beautiful, and the ancient ruins are breathtaking—but Greece is so much more than that. There are lush mountain villages where life moves at a different pace, forested gorges for hiking, lakeside towns, and quiet islands where you’ll find more donkeys than tourists. Whether you're wandering the streets of Nafplio or hiking the Samaria Gorge in Crete, there's an incredible depth of landscape and culture to explore far beyond the coast.

And don’t overlook the Greek mainland, especially Athens. So many travelers treat it as a one-night stop, but it’s absolutely worth more time. Yes, you’ll want to see the Acropolis—but you’ll also find a thriving modern city with incredible neighborhoods, edgy art, world-class food, and rooftop views that feel like movie sets. Beyond Athens, the mainland holds some of the country’s richest experiences: the monasteries of Meteora, the ruins at Delphi, vineyard visits in Nemea, and quiet mountain towns where time seems to stand still.

Myth: Greek food is all gyros and feta.
Truth: There’s nothing wrong with a good gyro, but Greek cuisine is deeply regional and rooted in tradition. Each area has its own specialties—wild greens and olive oil in the Peloponnese, fresh seafood in the Cyclades, rich stews and cheeses in the mountains of the mainland. You’ll find family-run tavernas where dishes are made with recipes handed down for generations. And no matter where you go, expect generous hospitality. It's not just about food—it’s about sitting down, sharing, and connecting.

Myth: You can just wing it with island-hopping.
Truth: This is one of the biggest misconceptions. Ferry routes don’t always connect directly, and schedules are seasonal and sometimes unreliable. Some islands are better paired than others, and in high season, popular routes can book up. We help clients plan smart routes that make the most of their time—without stressful logistics or unnecessary overnight ferry terminals.

Bonus Myth: Everyone in Greece speaks English, so you don’t need to know any Greek.
Truth: While many people in tourism do speak English, a little Greek goes a long way—and it’s deeply appreciated. Try saying; Kaliméra' (kah-lee-MEH-rah – good morning) or 'Efcharistio' (eff-kha-ree-STOH – thank you) when you can. You’ll likely get a big smile in return.

Let us help you plan a trip that goes beyond the surface. Greece is layered, generous, and full of quiet surprises—exactly the kind of place worth getting to know well! Πάμε! (Let's go!)

TRAVEL MYTHS—BUSTED: SPAIN EDITION!
At MMarkham Travel, we love helping our clients explore Spain—and we’ve heard just about every myth and misconception along the way. Let’s clear up a few of the most common ones so you can plan smarter and travel better:

MYTH: Spaniards eat paella for dinner.
We get it—paella feels like the ultimate Spanish dinner dish. But if you want to eat like a local, order it at lunch. In its birthplace of Valencia, paella is considered too heavy for dinner and is traditionally enjoyed midday, often on Sundays with family. If you see it on a dinner menu in a tourist-heavy area, it’s probably there for travelers—not locals.

And while we’re on the subject—Spanish mealtimes are on a completely different rhythm than what many Americans are used to.

Breakfast is light and simple—think toast with tomato or a pastry and coffee. Lunch, not dinner, is the main event of the day and typically starts around 2:00 pm. A small snack or merienda in the afternoon might hold you over, but most people don’t eat dinner until 9:00 or even 10:00 pm.

Many restaurants won’t open their doors until 8:30. This schedule might take some getting used to—but it’s worth it for the lingering meals, long conversations, and strong food culture Spain is known for.

MYTH: Everyone in Spain takes a siesta.
The idea of everything shutting down for a nap might sound charming (or frustrating, depending on your plans), but it’s not quite reality—at least not anymore. In major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, siestas are largely a thing of the past. That said, in smaller towns and villages, especially in Andalusia, you might find shops closed between 2:00 and 5:00 pm. What still holds true across the country? A much later daily rhythm—don’t expect early dinners or nightlife to start before midnight.

MYTH: Tapas are free.
Only in a few select cities like Granada or León will you get free tapas when you order a drink. In most of Spain, you’ll pay for each dish—but it’s usually affordable, and designed to be shared. Think of tapas as a relaxed, social way to dine—more about conversation and connection than formal courses.

MYTH: Spain is hot and sunny year-round.
While the Costa del Sol lives up to its name, Spain is much more geographically diverse than many travelers expect. The northern coast, including regions like Galicia, Asturias, and the Basque Country, is lush, cool, and often rainy—more like Ireland than Ibiza. Pack accordingly if your trip includes the north, especially in spring or fall.

Spain is a country of deep traditions, bold flavors, and beautiful contrasts—and we can help you experience all of it in a way that feels authentic and memorable. Whether you're dreaming of flamenco and tapas in Seville, Gaudí architecture in Barcelona, wine tasting in Rioja, or beach time on the Balearic Islands, MMarkham Travel will help you get there with ease.

Thoughtfully planned. Beautifully experienced. That’s our commitment at MMarkham Travel.

Travel Myths—Busted: France Edition!
At MMarkham Travel, we love helping travelers get past the clichés and truly connect with a place—and when it comes to France, there are a few stubborn myths that need to be retired for good.

MYTH: 'The French are rude.'
This one lingers, but it’s simply not true. French culture is built around politeness, but their version of polite can look different from what Americans are used to.

A warm 'Bonjour, Madame' or 'Monsieur' when you walk into a shop or restaurant isn’t optional—it’s essential. Skip the greeting, and yes, you might get a chilly response. But lead with basic courtesy, and you’ll usually find people are friendly, helpful, and proud to share their culture with you.

MYTH: 'Paris is the only place worth visiting.'
Oh, absolutely NOT! Paris is spectacular—no argument there—but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

Beyond the city lights, France is full of charming towns, diverse landscapes, and regional cultures that are completely distinct. From the lavender fields of Provence to the dramatic coastline of Brittany, the wine routes of Burgundy to the half-timbered villages of Alsace, and the beaches of Normandy, every region has its own rhythm, food traditions, and personality. Some of the most rewarding travel moments happen well beyond the capital.

MYTH: 'French food is fancy and expensive.'
French cuisine has a reputation for elegance, but don’t let that fool you. This is also the land of rustic stews, open-air markets, bakery breakfasts, and the legendary €12 prix fixe lunch. Yes, there are Michelin stars to be found—but you’ll also eat incredibly well at a neighborhood bistro, a roadside crêperie, or a village café. Take Rick Steve's advice and have a picnic!

If you love fresh bread, cheese, and wine, you’re in the right country.

France is layered, nuanced, and full of everyday pleasures that go way beyond the postcards. We’d love to help you see it with fresh eyes. Allons-y!

More myth-busting posts coming this week—stay tuned!
