We're just hearing of new regulations in Spain about the closure of Clubs and Bars.

*update*

Nothing too major:

The regions have agreed to the closure of all discos, clubs and cocktail bars. And for the rest of the hospitality sector, closing time will be 1am.

There are to be reinforced controls to prevent drinking in public places while smoking "on the public highway and in open-air spaces" will be prohibited in situations where social distancing of 1.5 metres is not possible.

Airbnb is restricting the ability of people under 25 in Britain, France and Spain from renting entire homes via its platform in order to reduce unauthorised parties and ensure safety.

Airbnb began cracking down last year as rowdy parties were causing problems with neighbours in certain communities, and with the coronavirus pandemic there has been even greater concern about events where social distancing measures are flouted.

Airbnb said it will now begin testing in Britain, France and Spain a ban on under-25s with less than three positive ratings from renting entire homes close to where they live.

If you’re travelling to Spainfrom UK before Dec 202 don’t forget to get your free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK to cover you in the case of illness.

If you have taken out private medical insurance, check your coverage as many will have changed their terms since Covid-19.

It stands to reason that because the airlines have cut their services so drastically even a slight percentage increase is going to drive the prices up.

But this is a double edge sword as they are still prone to cancel undercooked services.

As a vacationer, do you book now while the prices are good and face a cancelled flight, or wait and take a hit on the price!

Latest info on flights into Spain from UK:

Lockdown conditions in Spain eased last weekend, on June 21, with borders reopened to European tourists.

Airlines are slowly reinstating flights to Spain, with restrictions for those wanting to head abroad.

These include wearing masks on board for both customers and staff, using contactless ticketing and seating arrangements to ensure social distancing.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has recently changed its advice for Britons wishing to travel to Spain.

The FCO is still advising against all but essential travel due to the outbreak but said: “Spain’s borders are open to European Union and Schengen-area countries (with the exception of Portugal where the restrictions will continue to apply up until July 1), and travellers from the UK.

“This means that British nationals no longer need to present a residency certificate to enter Spain.

“The Spanish Government has confirmed that travellers arriving from the United Kingdom from June 21 are not required to self-isolate on arrival in Spain.”

So with a glimmer of hope on the horizon let's look at the facts as they are today 29th April.

There will be a relaxing of the restrictions put in place on March 15th.

It looks like hotels will be able to operate from 11th May, but with occupancy restrictions.

So far we still have no date when private rentals will resume.

- Small businesses and hotels can open from 11 May, but social distancing will remain in force.

- Though some schools will reopen in late May, most will stay closed until the new term begins in September, in line with a similar decision in Italy. By contrast, France unveiled plans on Tuesday to gradually resume school classes from 11 May
Restaurants can start opening their terraces from mid-May, but they must not be more than 30% full during the first phase
Religious services can resume on a limited basis from 11 May, at no more than one third of the building's capacity

- Theatres and cinemas will reopen from late May, but again must be no more than a third full.

- Shops can open at half capacity from around the end of June, with two metres between shoppers

- Beaches are expected to reopen in late June

If you hear of anything else, please PM us.

Tui have been thrown a lifeline by the German backed bank KfW.

This comes as the firm announced that it was suspending 99% of it's staff, halting payments to Hotels, and shutting up shop as much as it can.

According to Tui’s website, customers can still book holidays to Spain, which at present has one of the world’s highest rates of cases of coronavirus, in three weeks’ time but without having to pay a deposit.

Tui hoped to increase their share on the Spanish market this year after the collapse of Thomas Cook and still believes it can salvage the year by maximising the bookings for the summer period.

Of course, like Easyjet, they will have a struggle to get up to full operational volume in time for the summer period, we still believe that prices will be pushed up due to diminished supply of flights and staff.

So book early but make sure you're covered either by ATOL, holiday insurance or terms of your ticket allow a full refund or change free of charge.

Buckle up!

This is going to be a tough season.

Factor in high fare price increases, book early if your a renter, promote early and often if you’re an owner.

Owners.
Use every avenue at your disposal to get your property out there. I can’t say this enough time, but use your network. Promote to your friends and family and more importantly ask them to promote it.

You’re not being a burden and it’s not spammy, public opinion is in your favour, the travel industry will be the worst hit in this episode, so use every channel you have at hand.

EasyJet has grounded its entire fleet of aircraft for at least two months starting from the beginning of April.

This saw a significantly reduced fleet operating up until now.

What are the knock on effects to the travel industry in Spain?

It's thought that Easyjet should come out of this OK, but it's a possibility that it will have lost some of it's staff in the meantime, so a full resumption shouldn't be assumed come June 1st.

Also we can't assume that full travel will be allowed from June 1st. This incident has cut deep and although Spain owes 11% of it's GDP to tourism, we can't see the Spanish government throwing open it's doors with gay abandon.

We expect 2020 to be majorly impacted, many travellers will cancel, if they haven't already, due to their own personal circumstances or the price of flights being too prohibitively expensive, and we cannot discount the fear that many will have with travelling after such a shocking episode.

For owners.
Now is a good time to focus on your property, ensure it's presentable and all creatives and images are up to date.
Offer discounts, there are still going to be customers, they may just be harder to find.
List on more OTAs.
Create a FB page and publish it around your friends and family, ask them to do the same.
Create a website if you can.

For renters.
Do contact owners directly and look for some discount.
Do proceed with caution and protect yourself with payment protection (paypal etc)
Ensure you have holiday insurance.

Good luck out there, and stay positive.

COVID-19: A message to owners

These are tough times for the Spanish vacation rental market. Many of our community will struggle to make it through this period.

The first industry to be hit is the travel industry with airlines throwing out the red flag and looking for state help.

The margins are very thin and especially in Europe, who are just coming out of a winter season, many of the travel companies depend on the up cicle to prop up their yearly revenues.

In a recent report, the Aviation Authority CAPA recently said in a report that "by the end of May-2020, most airlines in the world will be bankrupt."

This is sobering news and one which will ripple through our industry for some time to come. Already airlines have cut their flights by 75-80% putting staff on standby or unpaid leave to stay afloat.

Whatever happens within the coming months, I think we can be sure that the industry is not going to tick back in a heartbeat and pick up where we left off.

With the fallout, we're going to see reduced flights options, with higher demand and increased prices at the bare minimum. We're already seeing guests canceling bookings far out into the year, with some hosts reporting losing booking as far as December.

Tough times lay ahead for the industry.

- We would encourage you now to engage with your existing bookings, ensuring them that you're still there and the booking is still good.
- Pay attention to the changes being enforced by your OTA - it's as rapidly changing situation.
- Research other OTAs for listing and spread your exposure.
- Spend some time now on your product, refresh your website, socials, photos, descriptions etc... this is the perfect opportunity.
- Push your listings out to as many OTAs as possible, on sites like this, create a website, share your FB page, put it on your profile, send it out to friends and family and ask them to share it. Make use of Channel Managers like Boost Reservations or Lodgify.
- Encourage your guests to book early if prices are low as we. Eli eve when this takes off, demand will outstrip supply by a factor of 4. This is going to drive up flight prices beyond what many are prepared to pay for them.

I know it's probably still early to be talking about the recovery, but as business owner, you need to be prepared for when this global issue moves on and be in the best position you can possibly be.

In the meantime, stay safe and stay informed.
