Seems Tuscany, but it’s Valpolicella, the most famous red wine zone in Veneto region, which is in northeastern Italy.

The vineyards of the Valpolicella region begin just outside the city of Verona and head towards Lake Garda.

It is a controlled designation of origin (DOC - DOCG) area and is mostly famous for Amarone wine, a very rich red wine with a very strong and powerful flavour.

CARNE SALADA

☝🏼“What you are is what you eat”, a very popular phrase when one talks about health and wellness. But it’s not just about eating healthily. Food is one of the major sources of identity of people. Its production is a complex cultural act because it involves experience, creativity, availability, commitment and communication.
⠀
🍽Traditional food and typical dishes were not invented by someone on purpose, instead, it’s the very true and sincere reflection of people’s life, habits, and necessities.

🏞If you have never heard about carne salada, you have probably never been in Trentino region. The name itself is misleading, this typical local cured meat has nothing to do with salting, but tells us about the ancient method of its preparation.
⠀
📚The history of carne salada is quite ancient, in the Middle ages Trentino was a strategic point of passage on the trade routes between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. One of the duties on anyone transporting goods was an obligation to slaughter one fifth of the animals passing through Trentino, with the obligation to sell them to the slaughterhouse in Trento. Hence the need to find a way of preserving large quantities of meat for as long as possible.

🧂Salt always played a very important role in eliminating micro-organisms and ensuring meat preservation. In the case of carne salada, salting takes place dry, without water, and lasts for 15 to 30 days in a dark and cool place, and the meat should be massaged continuously. The result is an exceptional and tasty low fat cured meat.

❓The best way to taste it?

🥩Raw, sliced not too thinly, dressed with a dash of lemon and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. At the most, you can add a few slivers of Trentingrana, the mountain cheese of these areas, very similar to Grana Padano, to the carpaccio. And just enjoy!

Ferragosto is just around the corner

The origins of Ferragosto, one of the most important national Italian holidays are to be found in Ancient Rome. It was Caesar Augustus who instituted the holiday in 18 BC to celebrate the harvest and the end of work in the fields. In honour of the emperor, the festival was called 'feriae Augustii' or 'feria Augustalis'. Hence the name of today's Ferragosto.

In the 7th century the Christian world began to celebrate the Assumption of Mary into heaven with a feast day, later fixed on 15 August.
⠀
To associate Ferragosto with the idea of a day of leisure and relaxation, however, one has to wait until the beginning of the XX century. From 1931 during the Fascist Regime in Italy were instituted so called "Treni popolari di Ferragosto" (folk trains) with highly discounted prices. This made it possible for the less well-off social classes to visit Italian cities or to reach seaside or mountain resorts, that launches mass tourism in Italy.

Just drive a short distance from Lake Garda and you enter a fairy-tale world of Giudicarie Valleys. The historical roots of these places are very deep and rewind up till prehistory, due to the presence of the important pile-dwelling settlements. Along with other 111 small sites of the prehistoric stilt house settlements in and around the Alps built from around 5000 to 500 B.C. on the edges of lakes, rivers or wetlands, it is acknowledged by UNESCO as a word heritage patrimony.

As the area is also recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, natural resources here are a source of wellness: a unique thermal water with the curative properties, clean air, meadows and uncontaminated forests, agricultural products as cultivated in the past.

So the best way to discover the place is to slow down the pace, walking, cycling to feel in tune with the environment.

🏰 The heart of Malcesine is its castle. It has a very long history and wasn’t built in a day. It spreads out on a sunny, wind protection slope to the south of the castle rock.

👑 The various owners extended the structure during the time, and the result we may observe even nowadays - three curtain walls at different levels.

📍Did you know that till 1929 the place was accessible only via water until the Gardesana road was finished?
