WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?
🐠🌞🌵🐬
Posting a bit out Central America these days. Partly because it’s downright amazing. Partly because it’s very open to travelers right now. And also because I’m currently here!

I read on government websites that traveling into Mexico across the border wasn’t allowed. But I had reasons to believe otherwise. So I packed up my van, Helen, gave her, my pup and I healthy shower and hit the road south. Sure enough, the border is fully open to anyone and everyone. I made my way to a little town on the Sea of Cortez called La Ventana. If I’ve learned anything this year it’s to put yourself where you need to be to make what you want happen. Read that again.

It’s no secret that I have an adventure sport addiction and this little wind capital of the Baja Peninsula is PERFECTION for learning to kiteboard. I first took lessons in Cambodia 4 years ago on a river mouth where conditions were EPIC and I felt like a rockstar immediately. Then I went to Vietnam and tried to pick up where I left off and quickly realized how difficult the sport really is. Then a few years later I found myself on the Kenyan coast picking it right back up again. Only to find out a few weeks later in Zanzibar I could hardly make my way to the water with a kite attached to me. Kitebaording is BY AND LARGE the most difficult sports I have learned, meaning it’s most definitely been the most rewarding. I kited all summer in Hood River, Oregon but it just made me hungry for more.

On top of kiting I was feeling trapped in the US, being the very longest I have ever been on US soil in over 10 years. And I was desperately in need of change of pace.

And ever MORE on top of that, I just launched a live streaming episode thingy kinda like a podcast - TODAY! We’re still working out the bumps though, it’s more difficult that we thought and we’re rethinking how we’re going to deliver it. (More details on the little gem of place I found here in Baja next week ;)

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY?!

San Blas Islands are ridiculous. And every bit worth the journey to get to. They’re the white sand, aqua blue beaches dreams (and commercials) are made of. And I’m sure there are plush options to get there and to stay at but you can do it on a dime, but that’s never been my style. From Panama City we rode in jeeps to the other side of the country on winding dirt roads that I would recommend taking Dramamine for. Hopped on some dug out canoe with a motor and arrived in paradise. Slept in tents, under the stars. Walked the palm swept beaches, snorkeled shipwrecks, kayaked in coves, drank rum from coconuts, ate fresh fish, and made some amazing new friends. I hopped around from island to island on various boats. You can take a sail boat that takes you all the way to Colombia! (And vice versa you can start in Colombia and end in Panama). Some folks even brought their motorbike as they had plans to travel all the way south to Argentina! It’s a bit bigger of a process to have your entire vehicle sent similar to this but it can be done! It’s better to go this route than drive the dangerous Darien Gap. A mountainous rainforest and lawless wilderness. A place where smuggling, robbery, kidnapping, and death are not uncommon stories. The PanAmerican Highway currently doesn’t go thru this region due to the outlaws and inhospitable wildlife. One day I’ll work my way around this and give you recommendations on the best way to go about it! But for now, you CAN travel to the San Blas Islands - and you should! 🌊🌞🌴

WHERE TO GO? ~ RIGHT NOW!
Oh hey, hello there!

I’ve been receiving some messages in regards to where we can travel to right now? But like, actually travel without 14 days of quarantine upon arrival, places that you can still go out to eat and shop or take part in some sort of local activity (with masks, 6ft of distance, and hand sanitizer everywhere - of course!) Many require a negative test within a few days of arrival. One of these places might not be your first choice but there still are options to suit everyone. Unique ski trips, beaches/caves/atvs/snorkeling/sailing/kayaking, food trip, road trip. Use this unique time to go somewhere you would have never thought of. I love going to unpopular places, places I had never even heard of before booking flights. For my gappers, reach out to hear about some of the volunteer and program options in some of these locations!

Here’s the International list:

CENTRAL AMERICA: Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama
EUROPE: Ireland, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia,Turkey
CARRIBBEAN: Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Granada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Barts, St Lucia, St Maarten, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos
SOUTH AMERICA: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru,
FRENCH POLYNESIA: Tahiti, Maldives, Bora Bora
MIDDLE EAST: Lebanon, Dubai
AFRICA: Dijubuti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia

PLUS, Domestic trips are practically endless. You cannot drive across the Canadian border right now but you can drive down to Mexico right now! Things are changing continuously so check in keep updated. Want more info? 💌 DM me!

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

This isn’t my most horrifying dining experience overseas…. But it’s up there. In all honesty I’m not that daring when it comes to trying exotic and unknown foods in foreign countries. I have a delicate stomach, I choose not to eat meat, I have food allergies and intolerances so I have to be selective and work around it. I had been for a morning run and a dip in ocean and was due for breakfast when a dude passed by with a cooler full of burritos 🌯. English is the official language in Belize 🇧🇿 so there were no language barriers when I asked for a vegetarian burrito. I paid the man, with my US dollars as most places accept US dollars as payment, and off he went. In my second bite I chomped down on a bone. Upon further inspection it looked threateningly similar to a skull. It was 100000% a skull…. of a Belizean gibnut…. An animal also know as a ‘royal rat’ 🐀.

Cute huh? I ate a rat head! I was distraught and uneasy about it for a while but it’s a tale to giggle at these days. PS Belize is currently on the ‘can travel to’ list! Swim with sharks🦈, learn to Kitesurf🪁, scuba dive the blue hole 🤿, go cave spelunking 👣- Belize is a gem! Even though it shares a border with Mexico you can only enter via airplane at the moment. Flights are currently ~$200USD roundtrip from many major US cities ….. ✈️

What’s your WORST/MOST RIDICULOUS ‘food’ 🍽 (ha! Or something you ate/consumed) experience you’ve had traveling!?

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

Mexico is popular destination for a few reasons. It’s close to the US, it’s stunning, and the lax regulations and affordable activities are hard to beat. Tulum is essentially a touristic Mecca. It hardly even feels like Mexico with how many gr**gos are there (what are gr**gos you ask? Non-locals/tourists/Americans). But Tulum is pretty nice. The beach and the ruins are pretty nice and the gr**goified food tastes pretty good and at reasonable prices. Everyone should go at least once.

I flew into Cancun for less than $100 and rented a car to get about. Online the was only $12/day or something ridiculous so I knew there had to be at a catch. Sure enough when I went to collect it the insurance was like $20-30 day. I sprang for it. Thankfully. Because I got in a crash the next day. The crappy brakes locked up and it had been raining and the pavement on the intersection where the incident happened was smooth as marble. We slammed riiiight into a Canadian family in their minivan. Luckily everyone was ok. The Mexican insurance I got for the car was liability insurance and I still ended up with some form of fee or bill needing to be paid by me. And that’s when my insurance kicked in. I always get insurance, no matter how expensive it is, they have always paid my claims.

You can absolutely travel to Mexico right now, by air and by land. Word on the street Tulum’s tourists aren’t as cooperative of the mask wearing and Covid could be at a higher risk. You can still visit so many beautiful places and keep a safe social distance. For example, has travel deals for less than $100 each way into Cabo San Lucas. Want more info? Send me a DM 📲

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY?!

This is funny.

When I was traveling in Guatemala, I am pretty sure between Lago de Atitlan and Semuc Champey, the van I was riding in was surprisingly pretty empty. I had been traveling solo and starting collecting a group of friends as we were all on the gr**go trail. Moving along to similar places, we had become a pack. A few English folks, an Aussie couple, a Swedish gal. It was just so fun. We were all sprawled out, laying on benches in this delightful rare event. Usually busses are so packed your 35lb backpack is on your lap or you’re 4 butts to a 2 butt bench. I had fallen asleep and woke abruptly when my body rolled off the seat and hit the floor of the van. We had been in a small crash. The little fella driving the van had to have been 13 or 14 years old and was learning to drive. With a handful of foreigners as his passengers in a fairly large van. Few issues and a few hours of the drivers going back in forth about fault and damages and we were on our way. I can’t even write this without giggling. LEARNING TO DRIVE!? Thru big cities?! With about 10 paying foreigners as passengers!? Hah! Guatemala is a riot. And you just have no choice but to enjoy the ride. 🇬🇹 🌄🎒

VANLIFE - Your Questions Answered!

Covid has changed the way we travel, and that's ok it just means we are all exploring our home countries even more! What's not to love about that!?! I am delighted to be working with many young families and 20-somethings - and even a few grey nomads! as they make the decision in their life to quit whatever isn’t serving them anymore and hit the road for a more fulfilling life. Some folks are still on the fence. And you should be skeptical, it’s a big project and an even bigger life decision to pack up and leave your comforts behind for the unknown of the road. In the blog I have answered the questions I get repeatedly about living in a van.

Where do you go to the bathroom? What about safety? What is vanlife like with a dog? Where do you park? How do you make money? What is day-to-day vanlife like?

Does it sound like something you can make happen?
Please have a read!

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

Digging thru my archives to share with you guys the gems of the world is one of my favorite parts of the week. I stumbled upon these shots from Myanmar and I am sitting here with my mouth open staring at it’s incredible beauty.

Myanmar was just opening up to foreign travelers when I visited. At the time all that was required was flying in via Yangon to collect a tourist visa upon arrival. I remember arriving and despite it being neighbors with Thailand I didn’t have one single person trying to selling me anything and everything or take me to their hotel or give me a taxi ride. It was probably the most peaceful arrival into a country I have ever had. Just a nice guy asking if I needed directions. I made some friends and we traveled to Bagan to witness some incredible sunrises and sunsets when hundreds of hot air balloons soar over the 10,000 Buddhist temples. Seriously breathtaking from every view. You can rent scooters (I definitely crashed mine) and cruise around from temple to temple and go in a lot of them or walk to the top to see sunrise or sunset. I missed a few sunsets and sunrises as I got a little daring with a questionable looking restaurant. It’s hard to enjoy your meal when you watch the chef walk out of the bathroom and go back to the stove to cook without washing his hands 🥴) but I did it and my body wasn’t too pleased. Luckily I had decided to pay a little more than usual for accommodation here, it made spending the next few days laying over a toilet a little more enjoyable. 🇲🇲

It’s said only 20% of American’s like their job. One way to beat the odds is by trying different things out before you spend years earning a college degree to prepare you for a career. Find out whether you like what you think you’re interested in. Determine your passions, then decide what to study. And for those 80% who don’t currently like their job, take a sabbatical and do something different. The worst thing you can do is stick with a job or a career that doesn’t fulfill you. Life is short, live it well. 💛

Living in a van doesn’t always mean you know where you’re going to be on a certain date. I didn’t sign up for an absentee ballot in time so I’m driving all the way back to Washington to cast my vote. I’ve got a plan and I’m going to make it happen. I hope you do what it takes tomorrow to get that vote in if you haven’t already! 🇺🇸

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

I’ve been on a US National Park kick these days. Mainly because so many of the people I am working with are currently taking or planning EPIC US road trips 🇺🇸. And using your voice to protect our public lands is something that you can and should do with your vote.

Bryce Canyon is one of the Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks. The crimson colored hoodoos go for as long and wide as the eye can see. It’s mind-blowing to understand their creation. 50 millions years ago a lake existed, tectonic plates collided to create an uplift in the earth’s surface, and natural weathering & erosion has left the formation of these hoodoos in jaw-dropping wonder.

Bryce Canyon sits a bit higher in elevation (~9,000ft) and we were delighted to see patches of snow on our hikes in March. Sunset and sunrise hikes near the amphitheater are extra special in Bryce Canyon. It’s not quite as popular as nearby Zion, so you’ll snag a bit extra tranquility and you’ll feel like you have it to yourself if you go in the off season. 🏜🗺🚐

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?
This mountain is special to me. It’s probably special to a lot of people. She demands respect. It’s Washington’s rooftop and the second highest mountain in the lower 48. It stands significantly taller than any mountain around it and is strinkingly visible from Seattle. It has declared lives and created heroes out of others. This ice sheathed giant’s beauty is better felt in person than seen in a million photos. She’s a deserving icon of the Pacific Northwest and she’s there to stay.
My first time on her I hiked up to Camp Muir in summer at 10,000ft, which only made me that much more determined to get myself to the top one day. 5 years later I made it happen, with proper training, skills, practice, fitness, and little bit of luck weather-wise. A successful summit on my first bid, and a ski down to remember for the rest of my days. A few months after summiting I was back, climbing up to Camp Muir to ski down for some early season turns and stepped into a crevasse. (At this point I had my skis on my back and it was white out conditions, if I even had my skis on my feet I wouldn’t have fallen in due to the surface area of the ski). I was dangling over the gap, thankfully caught by my big backpack and ski poles. I was in the kind of situation that tests every bit of skill you have and your ability to make imperative moves within milliseconds, it throws your instincts into high gear and challenges your high pressure decision making.
It’s one that will make you wonder all the what ifs and will continue to make you contemplate all of your future mountaineering objects with that much more care. 🏔🎿

HI! I’m Allie!
There are a few fresh faces about so I thought I’d give a brief introduction 🙂
I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and attended MSU - go green! Once I graduated I took off on my odyssey with a ‘7 years, 7 continents’ mission. I started in Australia on a work and holiday visa and along the years I discovered seemingly endless ways to stay living out of a backpack in foreign countries boppin’ around from country to country stopping every few months to stack some cash before heading off in the next direction. I excitedly traveled to 70 odd countries, chasing one adventure at a time and pursuing every desire I had. I learned how to Kitesurf in SE Asia, started mountaineering in India, chased waves in Australia while working for the traveling circus, worked in the adventure travel industry in New Zealand, failed at learning Swedish while running a BnB in their countryside, contracted infectious diseases in a few Asian countries, hitchhiked thru Patagonia, started a charity in Nepal after being stuck there due to the massive earthquake, drove from the UK to Mongolia - and back. To name a few.
I am now living back in the US, by choice - politically things are a mess here but each and every state is so diverse and packed with beauty I LOVE it. I live in my self-built adventure van, Helen 🚐, with my new puppy, Huck🐾. I’ve continued living a pretty unconventional life, doing what I want, when I want and it suits my soul. Living one day to the next chasing whatever fuels my creativity and feeds my spirit.
I am here to help encourage you do the same. We’ve only got one shot at life, making it count by doing what you love is essential. Traveling is my expertise - whether it’s a month long road trip thru the US or a year long move to a new country. If you have questions, I’ve got answers. Please reach out even if that trip of a lifetime is still just a dream :)

Honestly, I didn’t fall in love with all of Mama Africa like I expected. Or maybe I did. I have only scratched the surface of the ginormous continent so I can really only speak for Eastern Africa. But ETHIOPIA! What in the world. This place is so wild. So unlike anywhere I have ever been. So rich in culture. So diverse. Ethiopian is most delicious cuisine I have had (I’m pretty much vegan). The landscapes left my jaw ajar … for my entire time there. The people are warm and welcoming, yet it’s hard to know who to trust. In any country I visit I always head to their mountains first. Preferably the highest one they have to climb it! Mountain people are always easy to gel with. The respect and are in tune with Mother Nature, play outside, learn survival skills at young age.

The Simien mountains, accessed from Gondor, are nothing short of incredible. They’re filled with gelada monkeys and you can walk thru them on a guided tour (let’s be real - ALL African national parks must be visited with a guide) staying along the way in refuges. I happened to meet such wonderful fellow travelers doing this and the views we shared will be forever engrained in my brain. Ethiopia has opened their borders. Are you interested in going? 🇪🇹✈️

In response to the van build blogs I have recently posted I have received a number of questions in regards to the actual living part.
A few weeks back I shared some videos on how I go about my morning routine living in a van but I will be sharing a lot of the next few days with you guys and sharing videos of what it normally looks life for me in the van. I am also writing a blog to answer a few more questions in depth. Vanlife with a dog, parking, wifi, bathrooms, laundry, safety & security, mail. What do you want to know? What questions can I answer for you!?

Please leave them in the comments or send me a message and I will be sure to include it in the next blog! And keep an eye out for my weekend’s adventures I will be sharing with you!

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

This is my personal favorite US National Park! There’s no doubt about it, the Tetons are ridiculously stunning. I was bumming around on a solo road trip a few years back, in the very most gigantic white van and I was fairly new to rock climbing. I didn’t have a lot of the gear needed to climb the Grand Teton so I figured i would just hike and get some good beta for another trip. I started out on what I thought was going to be a short jaunt up to a lake for some pretty views and a place to hang my hammock when I met a fella heading up to scramble the Middle Teton. I asked if I could join him. Within the first 20 minutes we had talked about the things we had climbed and what were doing on our respective road trips and I had him convinced we would climb the Grand the following day. He had the required trad gear and was confident placing it, we spoke about safety and ability levels and agreed to set off at sunrise. I am still ecstatic about what an experience it was, even two years later!

Solo road trips are THE best. Solo travel is THE greatest way to travel. You are forced to chat to people, make new friends, and have surprise experiences! There are also a ton of outdoor education and guided courses yet this year you join to learn a new skill! If you’re ready for a new challenge message me to get the scoop on October and November rock climbing courses in the southwest!

WHERE IN THE WORLD WEDNESDAY!?

A country I honestly hadn’t no idea existed until I was planning routes for my overland journey from the UK to Mongolia. Moldova is sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania. It’s part of Europe but not in the EU and we waited for something like 6 delightful hours in 110* heat at the border. I was fortunate to have connections thru my previous employer and had amazing local tour guides! (Hope to return the favor one day 🤗) We went to the village outside of the capital and stayed with a family that prepared traditional food and homemade wine for us. Our rally vehicle looked a little out of place next to their means of transportation in the village. We had a translator and shared many delightful exchanges despite not really being able to exchange many words with the family. 🇲🇩

A question I get asked a ton: how do you get invited into these unique experiences while you’re traveling if you don’t have connections? I will be announcing this webinar soon, but in short - smile at strangers ☺️

Why I’m here :)

Studying abroad in college gave me a small taste of what the world had to offer. My curiosity and imagination ran wild dreaming and scheming all of the experiences I could possibly get myself into. So I graduated and set off on my ‘7 years, 7 continents’ odyssey that I fantasized about to keep me going while finishing my degree. Coincidentally, I ended up spending 7 years on the constant go and am currently living back in the US out my van in the incredible Pacific Northwest, and I am certainly not done traveling around our wild world. To name a few of the endless opportunities you can make happen for yourself; I worked for the traveling circus, I traveled around Australia in a van, I climbed the highest mountain of every country I visited in Africa, surfed in the Galapagos, skied the infamous Japanese powder, went to a Full Moon party in Thailand, hitchhiked thru Argentina, drove from the UK to Mongolia - and back!, started a charity in Nepal. And so many more that I will be adding to my blog to help your mind wander and create your own travel story.

I endeavor to encourage those who are curious in pushing life’s limits. Stepping outside of their comfortable life as they know it, to experience the world. To empower individuals to develop the confidence they need to take a gap year, connect individuals to opportunities that will fulfill their desires and set them up for a successful adventure discovering their passions.

Let me help you discover what brings out the human in you, the courage in you, the heart in you.
