Father's Day || The city sense thanks for sharing your story with us.

Abhishek Borkar is recognized as one of India’s versatile sarod players. He is playing the Sarod professionally since 2002. His father Pandit Shekhar Borkar is a notable maestro of the instrument who also invented the surtarang ('wave of notes'), a blend of sarod and veena. He guided his sons Abhishek and Praashekh in his tarankaar baaz playing form, which combines the Maihar Gharana of Ustad Allauddin Khan with doctrines from khayal vocal music, prominently including complex ornamentation of taans (melodic lines).
Abhishek has lately been performing at various prestigious music festivals in India and abroad, keeping strict attention to the purity of the art.

Father's Day || The city sense thanks for sharing your story with us.

"Having my father and my guru in the same incredible human being has truly been a blessing. As a guru, from placing my small fingers on a baby sarod and introducing me to the world of music, and as a father, holding my hand and teaching me how to play cricket, the balance with which he performed this dual role was and continues to be extraordinary. Even today, after a concert of mine he'd say "As a father, I'm extremely proud of you. As a guru, the work has just begun." And of course, as my guru, there is so much to learn from him, but like my father, he's the biggest role model I could ever hope for. He once said to me "Real riyaz starts after you keep your instrument aside. Live the life that you want your music to reflect." And I'm sure he said this to me more as a father than a guru. Been trying to follow this path ever since."

THE SAROD~ The sarod speaks eloquently of the close connections between India, Afganistan and the Persian world as it connects to the wiry, muscular style of the Afghan rabab. The sarod's tone quality is its foremost charm. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan says "The skin of the sarod makes the sound very human- it's not wooden. It has flexibility, sensitivity and depth in its tone.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan plays the vocal traditions of dhrupad and khayal style of singing on his sarod.

“The SLAVE of the SAROD”

The sarod is more petite than the Sitar and it fits comfortably in the player's lap. It has a leaner and more precise tone without any predominant jangling of sympathetic strings.

Once when someone asked Ustad Amjad Ali Khan that People like to talk about the king of the sarod that moment Ustad laughed and said "I'm the Slave of the sarod" acknowledging how hard it is to master, yet also confident that no one is likely to outshine him and also mentioned, "I am devoted to it and I always want to try and find out what it wants to say."

Each musical note is connected to this most important part of our minds. A wonderful and strange mystery of Indian classical music is the fact that one can spend a lifetime trying to attain knowledge and perfection and still feel that one has only touched a mere drop of an ocean. Along the Journey of searching and discovering, the learning never stops

Jamun~ It is believed that this exotic fruit has its origins in the Neolithic eras when man ate wild berries, wild plums, and nuts as a staple food. This watery fruit has a great significance in holistic therapies like Ayurvedic, Unani and Chinese medicine as it attenuates Kapha and Pitta.
In the Indian holy book Ramayana, Jamun is esteemed as the ‘Fruit of Gods’ because Lord Ram has eaten several berries and plums including Jamun in the forest during his 14-year exile from Ayodhya.
This fruit has some notable significance in Hindu belief, we can find Jamun planted in the Hindu temple gardens because it marked as sacred to Lord Ganesha and Lord Krishna.
Mythologies say that the skin colour of lorn Krishna has been described as the colour of Jamun. It is also used in Hindu marriage pandals.
The fruit of God's! Isn't it?

The Mango obsession: An only legacy that flowed impeccably from one generation to another in the Mughal empire.

Have you ever wondered about what made Babur come to India?
Surely Daulat Khan Lodi invited Babur as He assured a good portion of the Lodi empire and the war gift but to convince Babur to face Rana Sanga of Mewar necessitated something far unique and that "something unique" was mangoes.
A few decades later, his great-grandson Aurangzeb offered mangoes to Shah Abbas of Persia to aid him in his fight for the throne. Later, the King of Balkan also had given Aurangzeb 200 camel loads of dry fruits and mangoes as a peace pact.

There was a myth that Humayun while on the run from India to Kabul assured that mangoes were adequate to supply with the help of Babar's courier system.

One of the earliest grafting examples was of Mangoes as Akhar built the Lakhi Bagh near Darbhanga of 100 thousand mango trees.
The Nawab of Rampur endeavour copying under the crown's rule- built a unique courier lane linking Delhi and Mahratta coast so that he could have mangoes till the inception of spring, mainly those coming from one tree in Mazagong, says Mrs Graham Journal, all the mangoes were grafted.

The changing in power affected mangoes from their position of empire builder to simply a fruit. And in the days to come, numerous mango varieties disappeared but what didn't disappear is its sweet happiness which makes it today's one of the best fruits for summer!

As its use, it has a versatile history, From being used as a form of reimbursement for in-war armies in Mauryan times to Shivaji's pick of food while his guerilla warfare against the Mughals. The fact behind it is its energy-giving properties, nutrients and can be consumed uncooked.

Sherpas or Sharwas (mountain-dwelling people of Nepal) drink Sattu with warm water called it Sattu Ghol as it gives instantaneous energy and keeps the body hydrated on their difficult journey up the precarious routes of Himalayan mountains.

Sahastrabahu Temple is a group of two neighbouring temples. The smaller temple (Bahu Temple) is the replica of the taller one (Sas Bahu). Technically, Sahastrabahu means the one with many arms and is also a name used for Shiva. With time the word Sahastrabahu Sanskritised to Sas-Bahu Temple.

Initially both the temples would have had five segments an ardha-mandapa (small hall), a mandapa (hall), a maha-mandapa (big hall), an antarala (vestibule) and lastly a garbha-griha (sanctum). However during the Muslim invasions the Garbha girha of Bahu Temple was destroyed completely (as believed). At present there's no idol inside any temple and the sculptures carved on the temple walls were defaced completely.

To think about.....

Gujjara Pratiharas were ruling North India alone and had a humungous army. The whole nation turned against them including the Rashtrakutas and Palas. What political efforts and military force it would have taken for Kacchapagathas to dethrone the undefeatable reign of Gujjara Pratiharas?

Where are the palace of Kacchapagathas if they ever ruled and lived at this historic fortress? Did they only built this temple? Definitely not.

Jain Philosophy|| Primarily Jainism assumes that the universe is without a beginning or an end, being everlasting and eternal. The wheel of time incessantly revolves from the descending to the ascending stage where human prosperity, happiness, and life span increases and in the second half circle it revolves from the ascending stage to the descending stage where prosperity, happiness, and life span decreases.
