See the Elephants at Udawalawe Seeing an elephant in the wild for the first time is an unforgettable experience. They are truly awe-inducing, regal animals. Seeing them without huge crowds makes the experience that much better. Udawalawe is almost exclusively an elephant spotting park, and so it’ll never be as crowded as the others in the country.

Climb the Dondra Lighthouse Beautifully surrounded by palm trees and hugged by two beaches, it’s a breathtaking vantage point. You used to be able to just show up and climb it, but the rules changed, and now you have to get permission from the local authorities. The easiest way to do this is through the navy in Galle. It’s worth the time spent to get it approved. But if you can’t be bothered, it’s still worth a visit to look at from the ground.

Mirissa Beach This is the beach to go if you want some nightlife—Mirissa’s developed a bit of a party reputation over the past year or so. The busiest spot is The Doctors House, with happy hour daily from 4 to 6 p.m., frequent live music, and planned parties. There’s also Zephyr, right on the beach. While here, eat brunch at Shady Lane.
