I'm really happy to say that I'll be back at The Phoenix Arts Club on 25 November at 2pm with my new Christmas show, 'Behind the Baubles'.

We’ll go behind the baubles to delve into the life of St Nicholas, a.k.a. Father Christmas as depicted by a host of (possibly deranged) Renaissance artists. Important questions such as ‘why do we get oranges in our stockings’ and ‘why is Dali’s Christmas angel exploding?’ will be asked. And answered. This light hearted talk is a fast moving, fact filled journey of seasonal discovery.

Tickets start from £12.50 and are available from phoenixartsclub.com

Come and say hello! I’d love to see you there 🥰

PS Is it me or does the poster kind of look like it's from the late 70s?!

28/06/2023

Beyond the Palette is very much open for business - I've even made a promo!

I can't tell you how many takes it took for me to say 'hello' without sounding like manic/desperate/like I might devour you😅 Thank goodness I'm better at talking about art..

Get in touch if you're interested. I'd love to hear from you.

I’m back with a tour 😁 And it’s a good one…
In honour of the most talked about show on television, I invite you to join me for a tour that revels in treachery, tantrums, terrible decisions and the odd extraordinary comeback; Lazarus I’m looking at you. The great masters knew a thing or two about painting big themes and if there’s one thing the Roy family excel at its drama. And swearing.
NB no knowledge of Succession is actually necessary to enjoy this tour and swearing will be kept to a minimum!

2 June | 7pm - 8.30pm | National Gallery, London.

Are you coming? You can book a ticket on my website - beyondthepalette.co.uk

Do you live in the Weymouth area? Have you seen this poster? Have you bought your ticket? They are selling quickly now and I am getting very excited about being back in the Village Hall at Preston to perform my own material (well, with the help of a few famous artists and a bloody mental story from Greek mythology!). You don't have to like art and you don't have to know anything about art, you just have to come with a sense of humour and an open mind which sounds properly dodgy. Actually, that's not a bad description...

Tickets at beyondthepalette.co.uk/live-events or email me at [email protected]

I really hope to see your lovely face there on the 23rd 🥰

An Elevenses with Lynne special with a Killing Eve theme. Channelling Villanelle, obviously, and pulling apart the art history lecture on Cupid and Psyche, season 4, episode 5. In a nice way.

Wondering if it’s too late to give something up for lent? Wondering what you might even give up? Can I suggest that getting trollied in the afternoon might be a suggestion? Obviously I don’t have direct experience of this so I’ve turned to the inimitable Jan Steen for guidance 😏🤷🏻‍♀️🍷

Okay Bronzino’s ‘Allegory of Venus and Cupid’ is a totally weird painting but BUT WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?! Believe me, it might not be what you think!😬

17/02/2022

SLIGHTLY upsetting?! It involves an incestuous kiss between Venus and Cupid who are mother and son 🤮😧

There is so much to say about this crazy work that I’m doing it in two parts. Welcome to part one!

Marcel Duchamp's modified Mona Lisa has been the subject of much discussion over the decades but what does it all meeeeeeean???

The Persistence of Memory. It's time we talked about surrealism. Dali is the most famous artist of the Surrealist movement despite being thrown out of it!

Love, Lust and Lucky Escapes: the love child of art and cabaret!

Join me for an afternoon of love, lust and lucky escapes where we celebrate the romantic liaisons immortalised in art that haven’t gone right as well as one or two that have. Art and outrageous stories are woven together in this interactive and seductive Valentine treat at the inimitable Phoenix Arts Club. Partners not required!

Tickets are £10 and available on the Phoenix Arts Club website here:

This is the 101st episode of Elevenses with Lynne 😉😁 To celebrate I asked you what you would confine to art history room 101. The results are in!!! 😜🤣

A proper tasty portrait but was Giuseppe Arcimboldo wise to paint his patron, Rudolf II, as a greengrocer's delight? And would he have gone for the banana mouth if they'd been discovered in Europe in 1590? (They wouldn't have been an option for another 43 years). I think we know the answer to that one!

I was clearly thinking about fruit salad or similar in the middle of this as not only do I lose my words but I miss out a whole painting. It's a fantastic painting too, called 'Earth'; you can take a look at it on my blog at beyondthepalette.co.uk/blog

Io Saturnalia! The actual Elevenses with Lynne episode in which I explain my appalling behaviour 😍

Wishing you all a fabulous end of Saturnalia and an even more merry Christmas 🎄🥂😍🎅

Io Saturnalia! Shall we just call it art, darlings?? Watch out for the episode of 'Elevenses with Lynne' that goes some way to explaining this drunken frenzy...

Look at the idol?! St Margaret would rather get eaten by a dragon than look at the idol.

Thank you to Chris, my fabulous Step-Dad, for providing the 'idol' for the cover photo. It sits next to me as I record all my Elevenses. I try not to remember that it was supposed to be me!!

Severed hands, huge metal hooks, magicians boiling in a cauldron with beautiful maidens - what more could anyone ask for?

The title saint of this piece is Marius who is displayed almost for our viewing pleasure rather than competing with the horror in the rest of the image.

Welcome to the strange world of the Santo Stefano Rotondo frescoes!

Three dead saints, one dead Christian Roman soldier, countless other cadavers; it has to be a fresco from Santo Stefano Rotondo.

Warning: it's grim!

Question: What do you get if you boil St Cecilia for a day and a half in a cauldron of water?
Answer: A very clean martyr

She wasn't bothered at all by this horrific torture and even when the poor lady had her head chopped off she continued to preach the Christian doctrine for several days.

Here she is in Santo Stefano Rotondo looking angelically unperturbed.

There we all were set up for some gore and then... Instagram fizzled, and crackled, the picture started to go and BAM, the live was over.

Will you EVER find out who person C was and what the actual properly gory images were?? Tune in this Thursday at 11am to find out!

In the meantime, please enjoy St Stephen being pelted with what look like baked potatoes.

Also, who remembers the test card??

The birth of Bacchus. Or should I say the BIRTHS of Bacchus? As you would expect the god of wine had a dramatic start. But why is there a dead person in Poussin's painting?

Themis. Goddess of law and order, wise prophet, deliverer of unintelligible oracles and always proud to be depicted with an ostrich.

Yes, he is actually missing his p***s. That's all I can say. Well, actually I say quite a lot more in the video. It's basically all about drunkenness, deception and rejection. What's not to love?

Art history has never been so entertaining or accessible

If you think art history is boring, let me change your mind. I am an art historian who brings art to life. Sometimes quite literally. In my own inimitable style, I weave together the narratives within artworks with the quirky, often scandalous biographies of the artists, owners and, of course, the works themselves. If there's something strange going on, I'll find it. If there's gossip, I'll share it. I combine all you ever wanted to know about paintings, artists, movements, isms (!!) with arty-facts that you didn't even know you were wondering about. The bonus is that I have devised some unique ways to share my knowledge. The 'Curated Cocktails and Canapés' series, available on my website, YouTube and across my social media channels, makes use of a green screen and iPhone camera to create entertaining bite sized arty titbits. Virtual Art History Salons expand on themes such as Greek Mythology, Divas and Wicked Women. A Romp Through the National Gallery reveals a potted history of western art in six paintings. Diana Isabel Jervis-Read, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts had this to say about a gallery tour: 'a tour de force... fascinating, funny and memorable' My aim is to entertain you and you'll learn absolutely masses along the way.
