Let us know what facts about Ireland we have missed in the comments! 👇

1. St Valentine’s remains are in the Carmelite Church on Whitefriar Street in central Dublin. The shrine features a statue of St Valentine. The remains were gifted to the church by Pope Gregory XV1 in the 1800’s.

2. The longest coastal touring route in the world is in Ireland. It begins at Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal and stretches 2,600 kilometres to the seaside town of Kinsale in County Cork.

3. Irish (Gaelige) is one of the world’s oldest languages and is the first official language in Ireland. It was seen in ancient Ogham script in the 5th century. It’s a sister language to Manx (Isle of Man) and Scottish Gaelic.

4. The national sport of Ireland, hurling, is the oldest and fastest sport in the world. It is thought to predate Christianity. The stick used is called a hurley and the ball is called a sliotar.

5. Ireland is the only country in the world to have a musical instrument as a national symbol; the Harp features on the covers of Irish passports, on coins and on official seals.

6. The Titanic was built in Belfast. It was launched on May 31st, 1911 at Harland & Wolf’s shipyard on the River Lagan. There is now a visitor centre located on the site of this former shipyard.

7. Ireland has the highest number per capita of redheads in the world, with over 10% of the population. The MC1R gene which causes red hair is thought to have arrived in Ireland from Central Asia about 50,000 years ago.

8. Halloween originated in Ireland. It began as Samhain, an ancient pagan celebration that marked the beginning of harvest time. The Celts believed that on Samhain the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred.

9. St Patrick was not Irish. He was born around 450 A.D. on the coast of Southern England. He was captured there as a teenager by Irish slave traders and taken to Ireland.

10. The oldest working lighthouse in the world is in Ireland. It was a beacon in the 6th century and then became a grand tower built by William Marshall in the 13th century.
