“Destiny guides our fortunes more favorably than we could have expected. Look there, Sancho Panza, my friend, and see those thirty or so wild giants, with whom I intend to do battle and kill each and all of them, so with their stolen b***y we can begin to enrich ourselves. This is nobel, righteous warfare, for it is wonderfully useful to God to have such an evil race wiped from the face of the earth."
"What giants?" Asked Sancho Panza.
"The ones you can see over there," answered his master, "with the huge arms, some of which are very nearly two leagues long."
"Now look, your grace," said Sancho, "what you see over there aren't giants, but windmills, and what seems to be arms are just their sails, that go around in the wind and turn the millstone."
"Obviously," replied Don Quijote, "you don't know much about adventures.”

A journey to the Everest Base Camp

During my ascension to the Base Camp, I regularly picked up rubbish around (when not too tired). For me, it is essential to respect and protect this magical place and permit others to enjoy it as I did. The photograph shows how much I would pick in a day.
Contrary to what people may think, in my experience, I noticed that tourists were not polluting the way to Everest; I even crossed the path of a team of Chinese tourists who were effectively clearing litter on their way to the Base Camp.
As a matter of fact, it is mainly locals, having no conception for the protection of the environment, who are throwing litters. Trash bins are regularly available along the path; however, the main challenge resides in bringing down wastes.
There are a few rules that help with waste management:
- Avoid packaged food creating rubbish; for instance, plastic bottles cannot be recycled in Nepal. So do not buy water bottles during the trek, but bring the material to filter your water.
- You can leave biological trash in a discreet place.
- Any other rubbish will need to be thrown in a trash bin or carried back down.
Finally, I believe that by showing a good example on the trek, we can change the behavior of people

Visit Namche Bazaar in 360 :)

A journey to the Everest Base Camp - Day 3.

Namche Bazaar is a central hub in the Khumbu Valley. You will find excellent bakeries and many gear shops in case you are missing something. We even enjoyed a hot shower at our lodge for our first night!

Check out the cinema in Cafe de 8848, it is worth the stop.
Since we had an extra day in Namche, we enjoyed a movie viewing about Sherpas called 'Sherpas, The true heroes of Everest', while enjoying nice tea and food. It really got us excited to continue the adventure!
The viewing starts at 3 pm.

A journey to the Everest Base Camp - through Namche Bazaar

Picture 1: Sherpas are highly respected in the valley and kids play being their heroes.

Picture 2: Porters are the main way to carry merchandise across the Khumbu valley. Most porter are men, and apparently can start working early in age.

Picture 3: The market of Namche is where locals buy their food coming from lower altitude.

A journey to the Everest Base Camp - Day 3: Acclimatisation day at Namche
We dedicated our third day to acclimatize in Namche Bazaar; it consists of sleeping two nights at the same elevation while climbing at a higher elevation during the day, thus helping the body to get used to the high altitude. Great opportunity to discover the surroundings.
In the morning, we climbed to the Hotel View Everest at 3880 meters, where we enjoyed a hot tea on the terrace with beautiful views of the mountains from left to right Taboche, Nuptse, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Shartse, and Ama Dablam.

Toward Namche Bazaar (approx 6 hours)
The second day promised to be a hard one, and it didn't disappoint.
Our destination was the village of Namche at 3340 meters, which was 800 meters of elevation in a single day, and we were barely used to the high altitude. I was overloaded, 14 kg on my back, I promised myself to be lighter for the rest of the journey. The trek is a constant climb of the Khumbu Valley, mostly through a dense forest.

A journey to the Everest Base Camp.
Sherpa is one of the ethnic groups native to the highest altitudes of the Himalayan mountains of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan.
Sherpas are known for being elite mountaineers and are hired to guide and to support climbing expeditions in the peaks of the region, the most famous one being Tenzing Norgay. The term Sherpa is used by foreigners to call their guide or porter regardless of their ethnicity; in fact, our guide and porter were Tamang, an ethnic coming from lower altitudes of the Himalayan mountains.
Porters: Today, still, using porters is the most common way to transport cargo, such as water, food, equipment, construction materials, etc. in the Khumbu valleys on impracticable paths. I was impressed by how much loads they carry on their backs, often supported by a strap over their foreheads. Packs are sometimes heavier than their bodies, and they would walk for hours at high altitudes; I felt laughable in comparison struggling with my little backpack.

It is possible to suffer from altitude sickness from 2500 meters and above; thus, it is essential to sleep at a lower altitude than the highest point you reach in a day. For our first day, we decided to trek until the small settlement of Phakding, at 2610 meters, which was a proper warm-up for what was coming up next. The hike was an easy downhill through forests and small settlements.

Bob arrived in Vancouver and is visiting the First Nations of North America!

Totem poles were raised for various reasons. They stood as dramatic sculptures depicting supernatural, animals or ancestors. Each family had their own unique symbols. Totem poles could also be part of the architecture, supporting the roof of houses.

Photo of the Moria Camp - July 2018

You can see on the left section, the original camp surrounded by fences. The camp is planned to host 2000 people while 7000 refugees are today hosted.
Tents are set between rows of isobox that are overcrowded. On the right section of the camp (outside the fences), crappy tents from UNHCR are put to host the rest of the people. Often tension and fights rise in this part of the camp where the conditions are barely humanly appropriate. So much of the problems/challenges in term of health, managing people with PTSD and avoiding fights could be done by simply improving the living conditions in the camp..

Moria through the eyes of photographer Kenny Karpov

"Throughout the last three years of my life working in the humanitarian field, I have visited many refugee camps, but I have never seen people in such atrocious conditions as in Moria."

Photographer Kenny Karpov documented the work of Boat Refugee Foundation in may 2018. In his blog, he describes the refugee situation on Lesvos. A must-read if you want to understand more about the complex situation in which thousands of refugees find themselves.
