What about visiting mighty PELION as well?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pelion is a mountain at the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a hook-like peninsula between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The mountain is thickly forested, with both deciduous and perennial forests, mainly of beech, oak, maple and chestnut trees, with plane tree groves surrounding places with water. Pelion is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Greece and is a popular tourist attraction throughout the year: hiking trails and stone paths give access to springs, coves and numerous beaches, sandy or pebbly, set among lusciously green slopes. Pelion is an amply watered mountain with an abundance of springs, gorges, streams and rivulets; many streams are routed in carved-stone artificial beds to bring water to the villages and their thriving orchards. The higher elevations of the mountain receive enough snowfall so as to host skiing facilities that operate from Christmas to Easter.
Let's start our week revealing you our 3rd destination around Greece, VOLOS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Volos is one of the largest and most attractive cities in Greece as well as one of the country’s most prominent ports. The modern-day city, built near the site of ancient Iolcos, dominates the region of Magnesia from its position at the foot of Mount Pelion overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Thessaly, in the centre of Greece (Volos is situated 320km N of Athens and 219km S of Thessaloniki) combining the allure of the sea with the mystical charm of the Centaurs’ mountain. The sea creates a wonderful seafront with picturesque little restaurants, the famous ''tsipouradika'', named after tsipouro, the traditional spirit of the area, which is perfect when combined with seafood teasers. Follow the paved Argonauts Avenue on the seafront and go all the way to the port on its western side, just as the locals love doing when in the mood for a romantic stroll with a stunning view to the open sea.

Taking the bus from Niš leads us to.....THESSALONIKI! Let's begin our adventure in the second part of our TSU,Greece!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thessaloniki itself never doubted its own Cultural identity and its millennia of existence, it stands there since 315BC founded by Cassander, who named it after his wife and Alexander’s the Great sister. Ιt was chosen as the co-reigning city of the Byzantine Empire alongside Constantinople. Τo prove just that there are several Paleochristian monuments, constituting a Unesco World Heritage Site.Historically one of Europe’s oldest and most multiethnic cities, widely considered as the cultural capital of Greece, is truly unique in the sense that it intricately marries its thousands-year-old multicultural heritage and the architectural marvels with the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Sephardic Jew history. Festivals abound, most notably the “Dimitria Festival” coming from the”Golden Age” of the Byzantine period of the city and the “International Film Festival”, which draws hoards of buffs to the city each year. It has also produced many of the country’s most acclaimed bands, visual artists and designers as well as new waves of culture makers. The cutting-edge art performances and cinematic avant-garde, recently launched cultural sites and creative projects, Arts and Entertainment hubs all-in-one, numerous monuments, fifteen listed at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the 5km meandering waterfront, make Thessaloniki a “must-see destination”.
Our last stop in Serbia before we take the bus to Greece is....NIS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Niš is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and with around 250,000 residents is the third largest in Serbia and the capital of the Nišava District. It is located in southern Serbia, at the crossroads of the most important Balkan and European routes connecting Europe with the Middle East. In Niš, the main road, which runs from the north via the Morava valley, forks southward via the South Morava-Vardar valley (towards Thessaloniki and Athens), while the east road runs through the Nišava-Marica valley towards Sofia, Istanbul and the Middle East. In the Roman period, the second road was called the Via militaris, whereas in the Middle Ages it was called the Constantinople Road.

What about SOKOBANJA?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sokobanja is located in southeastern Serbia, between the Ozren and Rtanj mountains, on the banks of the Moravica river. It lies 400 m above sea-level and is 230 km from Belgrade. The therapeutic qualities of Sokobanja’s thermal springs were known as far back as Ancient Rome. The Sokobanja public hamam – steam bath – was first mentioned by Turkish travel writer Evliya çelebi in 1663. After the liberation from the Turks, Prince Miloš ordered the renovation of the hamam and built a residence (konak), and Leopold Erlich was appointed as the spa’s first doctor. The start of organised tourism in Sokobanja can be traced back to 1837 when the office of Prince Miloš issued a referral (‘voucher’) to warrant officer Lazarević to have treatment in the spa.
We keep on strolling around Serbia's hidden paths before jumping into the endless blue of Greece.Next stop is SMEDEREVO.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are cities which became the capital by their development through history, and others that were built to be the capital. Smederevo is one such town. The last Serbian medieval capital, it was the last attempt to protect the glorious Serbian medieval state. Also called Water city, the largest lowland fortress in Europe, the gateway between East and West, all of these are epithets that adorn Smederevo. Only in Smederevo can you see the remains of the last Serbian medieval court, and only in Smederevo can you feel how the renaissance touched Serbia. Too late. With the final fall of the last Serbian capital, Smederevo, into Ottoman hands in 1459, the Serbian state disappeared. Today, Smederevo is also the city of wine and you can taste those wines in the wine town on the main square. Smederevo is known for its relaxed atmosphere, good food, quality wines, festivals, events, concerts, and vibrant cultural life during the whole year.
