โ€ฆ10, along with the rest of the herd! These impalas are being released from a game capture truck onto the reserve as part of a game introduction programme. Leaping is an important defence mechanism for impalas, allowing them to evade predators by jumping up to 3 meters high and covering distances of 10 meters in a single bound.
During this leaping, they also release a scent from the metatarsal glands in the black tufts on the backs of their hind legs. This scent is thought to help the herd regroup if they become scattered.

The โ€˜indlamuโ€™ is a fantastic dance that the Zulu community perform, traditionally to prepare to go to war or to celebrate the harvest. This dance includes one dancer lifting their foot high over their head and bringing it down quickly, often mirrored by other dancers. These young gentlemen were practicing the dance in front of our GAP students for a local dance competition to represent their high school.

These five young artists from a rural KwaZulu-Natal school were winners of the Project Rhino Rhino Art - Let Our Children's Voices Be Heard Competition, where learners illustrated the importance of saving rhinos. They joined 60 other winners at the annual โ€˜Kids Campโ€™ held at Nambiti Research Camp, where they saw rhinos in their natural habitat for the first time.
This yearโ€™s KwaZulu Conservation Research groups brought many bags of donations for local communities. The leftover clothing, toys, and toiletries were made into goodie bags and handed out as prizes at the camp.

Throughout the year, all the groups generously donated stationery, sports kits, clothing, and toiletries, which were distributed during various outreach initiatives. A special mention goes to Myerscough College & University Centre students, who brought an impressive 350kg (772lbs) of donations and provided full winter kits for the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) at Nambiti Game Reserve.
Katieโ€™s father donated Oakley polarized sunglasses for the APU field rangers. These sunglasses are particularly useful for rangers on bikes, offering protection from dust, sun, and glare.
Wild Connection of Nambiti Research, expressed their gratitude, highlighting how these contributions have had a significant positive impact on the community this year.

Today is International Mountain Day ๐Ÿ—ป
This yearโ€™s theme is: โ€œMountain solutions for a sustainable future โ€“ innovation, adaptation, and youth.โ€

๐ŸŒ„On their trips, all our student groups encounter mountains at some point. Hereโ€™s a nugget of knowledge to keep in mind when noticing the names of locations at our project sites.

Whatโ€™s the difference between โ€œbergโ€ and โ€œburgโ€ in South Africa?

โ€œBergโ€ means โ€œmountainโ€ in Afrikaans and Dutch.
๐Ÿ”The Drakensberg: Majestic and close to the KwaZulu Research and Conservation projects. Snow-capped peaks are visible from Nambiti Research Camp. โ€œDrakenโ€ means dragon!๐Ÿ‰
๐ŸžThe Waterberg: Found in Limpopo province, home to our Waterberg projects. Itโ€™s sunny and dry in winter when our groups typically travel, in summer the rainfall brings water streaming from the rocks. ๐Ÿ’ฆ

โ€œBurgโ€ refers to a โ€œfortressโ€ or โ€œtown,โ€ as in other parts of the world.
๐ŸŒ‡ Johannesburg: Also known as "Joburg", "Jozi" or the "City of Gold," located in Gauteng province, is where most groups arrive at OR Tambo International Airport.
